Sanity -> Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 4:54:18 PM)

COPENHAGEN, Denmark - Anarchists from across northern Europe flocked to join protesters in the Danish capital on Saturday after two nights of riots sparked by the eviction of squatters from an abandoned building that had been a center for young leftists and punk rockers

More than 500 people, including scores of foreigners, have been arrested since the riots started Thursday. Authorities said more than 200 were arrested early Saturday following overnight clashes in which demonstrators pelted police with cobblestones and set fire to cars.

A school was also vandalized and several buildings damaged by fire overnight Saturday. One protester was reportedly wounded in the violence, while 25 were injured the night before in what police have called Denmark's worst riots in a decade.

Police said activists from Sweden, Norway and Germany had joined hundreds of Danish youth in the protests. Sympathy protests were held in Germany, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Critics said the demonstrations were misguided because they target a Scandinavian welfare state that ranks among the world's most egalitarian countries.

"The spoiled kids in the Youth House woke up to reality in Danish society where you have a job and pay rent," Anders Fredrik Mihle of the governing Liberal Party's youth wing said, referring to the building where the squatters had been evicted.

Like its neighbors, Denmark has a generous welfare system supported by high taxes. Education is free and health services are heavily subsidized. However, leftists have criticized the center-right government for eroding the system with proposed reforms including raising the retirement age and trimming student grants.

The protesters see their fight to keep the "Youth House," a four-story building used by young squatters since the 1980s, as symbolic of a wider struggle against a capitalist establishment.
"This is a display of anger and rage after more than seven years of struggle to keep what is ours," said Jan, a 22-year-old activist who has been coming to the building for the last 10 years. He declined to give his last name, saying that was the norm among people frequenting the building.

The riots were sparked when an anti-terror squad on Thursday evicted the squatters from the red brick building with graffiti-covered walls. Built in 1897, it was a community theater for the labor movement and a culture and conference center; Vladimir Lenin was among its visitors. In recent years, it has hosted concerts with performers like Australian Nick Cave and Icelandic singer Bjork.
As news of the riots spread, sympathizers around Europe rallied support for the protesters. The Danes warned like-minded foreigners Saturday that the borders were tightening after two nights of clashes had turned the normally quiet streets of Copenhagen into a battle zone.

"Solidarity among people has no borders, just like the Spanish civil war or the youth rebellion in the late 1960s. People recognize themselves in such causes," said Rene Karpantschof, a sociology lecturer at the University of Copenhagen and former squatter.
The eviction had been planned since last year, when courts ordered the squatters to hand the building over to a Christian congregation that bought it six years ago. The squatters said the city had no right to sell the building, and they demanded another building for free as a replacement.

Police spokesman Flemming Steen Munch said officers searched more than 10 homes in Copenhagen in an effort to track down activists. Meanwhile, vandals covered Copenhagen's famed Little Mermaid statue with pink paint, but Munch could not say whether the vandalism was linked to the riots.

Copenhagen residents had mixed feelings about the demonstrations.
"The idea of an alternative society is good," said Berit Larsen, 57, as she watched a peaceful demonstration against the eviction on Saturday afternoon. "We need to have room for everyone but the violence we have seen is not what I consider an alternative way for society."

Well, fuck it, here goes.

Wasn't there something similar in Seattle a few years back, and Genoa etc, etc.

This is nothing to do with nationality, continent or anything you would like to imagine.

It is a global issue, one of protest against consumerism and a business dominated political landscape. Aren't you one of the "for the people by the people" .......surely you can see there's no harm in a group of lads and lasses setting up shop and going about their business? or does the left-wing line draw you in? and are the people really big business owners and their media allies? Whatever happened to a free world.

Personally, it's not for me, I've better things to do with my time than sit 'round in a shit hole and fantasise about making a difference, but I'm really struggling to understand the exact point of your post.

If its the Ungdomshuset squat you are talking about, I think its a shame the Danish government is evicting them and they asked for the trouble they are getting. If a government feels threatened by an alternative life style, they aren't much of a government. The government objects to people defending their homes but are happy to send troops to kill in foreign lands. I hope the squatters save their homes. I hope they save the commune.

If I was twenty years younger I'd be on my bike and past Hamburg by now with a stash. Nice women up there and great beer.

LadyIce -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 6:50:16 PM)

Fascinating article, I did not realize the situation was so grim in Denmark.
I knew it was bad in France and London, but not Denmark.
Evidently, there are some serious wide spread issues in Europe, with the growing
number of foreigners.
I don't think they have enough jobs for all those people, so why do they keep
allowing more of them into their countries?
No jobs, no future and no where to live, no wonder they are rioting, they have
nothing else to do.

Sanity -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 7:28:20 PM)

What was the point of my post? I didn't need to make a point, did I? Didn't the news article speak for itself? If I had a point though, I suppose that it would be that this news article is the perfect rebuttal for the recent thread that had as its heart a poll that claimed Europeans are a much happier lot than Americans are. What I got from this story is that Leftists will never be happy. No matter how much you give them, they'll always demand more and more and more and, when there's nothing left to give because most everyone refuses to work due to the fact that everything is free, they'll riot and burn anything that is left standing.

That's my point. That article is disturbing to me because it is what Europe is coming to, it's what the Left is coming to.

popeye1250 -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 7:48:15 PM)

Sanity, you got that right about leftists never being happy.
I've never met such an anal-retentive, politically-correct, boring, DULL people as left wingers.
If they committed mass suicide by swallowing hand grenades they'd still be boring!
It's like intellectually they hit 16 years old and the engine just fuckin stalls!
Get a clue, "Neighborhood Organizer" is NOT a fucking JOB!
Neither is -fill in the blank-"Activist."
They're why all the "living in your parent's basement" jokes exist.
And they fuckin do too, right into their fifties when their parents don't come down for breakfast anymore!
Can you imagine being stuck in an elevator with "Perfessor" Ward "Tonto" Churchill?
"Hey Kimosabe, forged any good papers lately?"

NorthernGent -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 8:03:19 PM)

How can you measure happiness? It ain't exactly tangible....and who in their right mind is going to claim Americans are happier than Europeans or vice versa.

I thought maybe your thread is about consumerism and globalisation, but you've managed to spin it into a Europe v America war of words and a generalisation of a continent based on a few students and activists, which incidentally can be positive or negative depending upon your point of view.

I noticed you ignored my Seattle comment. Large swathes of the world are pissed off with globalisation and rampant consumerism. To dress it up as non-American is bafflingly ignorant of the truth. Seattle.

Sanity -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 8:08:54 PM)

No, NG - I don't care if they're European Leftists or American Leftists - I hate them all the same.

NorthernGent -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 8:12:58 PM)

Well that's your call, but based on post 7 you managed to turn it into a European issue and one where "leftists will never be happy". Not sure how you can draw that conclusion from a few students and activists, but you're entitled to your opinion.

Sanity -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 8:22:51 PM)

Try again, NG. Try reading the article. It's a lot more than just "a few students and activists". They're coming from all over Europe to torch the place - Denmark has been forced to tighten its borders! As for the rest of your misunderstandings, again, NO, I am not saying it's a European thing. I'm saying it's a Leftist thing. Torching schools, attacking the police, trying to steal things that don't belong to them... American Leftists are certainly just as bad. And it's not just one isolated occurrence - Germany was just rioting, you mentioned Seattle yourself - and Paris was burning too, not long ago... oh wait, it was angry Muslim youths who torched Paris, not Liberals (for once).

But you're beginning to get the picture, I'm sure.

popeye1250 -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 8:52:42 PM)

Sanity, oh yeah, leftists are cheap too.
They take a dollar bill out of their pocket and Washington blinks from the light.
They throw quarters around like manhole covers!

popeye1250 -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 9:30:03 PM)

I just went into Yahoo search images under Ward Churchill and you should see some of his "fans!"
People with chicken hats on listening to his "lectures."
And there's one of him in full indian featherd head dress and in underware posing. He looks like that wrestler "Cheif Jay Strongbow." lol
Funny though, cut his hair short and he looks "veddy English."

MzMia -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 10:39:22 PM)

Europe has a lot to deal with here.  What are they going to do if these
people can't find jobs? Send them back? Support them forever?
Maybe they can send them to Mexico and they can come to the USA.

luckydog1 -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/3/2007 11:10:30 PM)

Sanity, you miss the point.  The rioters are very happy.  Imagine the party going on there.  Looting, setting fires, getting high, radical sex, screaming slogans, attacking people, ect.  Just look at Meat's post. If he was younger he would take some drugs there for the beer and women.  I bet the rioters have very high self esteem also.
Also I have to say protesting the world economic system, and rioting so you can avoid paying any form of rent are not comparable at all.  Though I am sure a large % of the people in Seattle and Genoa were there for the drugs and women also.

You're trying to make a big thing out of a little thing. I support the Ungdomshuset squat because it is an experiment in an alternative life style which is the reason for most of its support from none residents. You will find that many bourgeois Danish folk didn't have a problem with it. However, when you get a heavy handed government wanting to impose its will at all costs then you get what you get in Danmark. The government has created a rallying point for mainly young people regardless of whether they are left ot right. It's no big deal, Europe isn't a fire, its just people out on a jolly. I hope the government gets a bloody nose and I hope the squatters take the Danish government to the European court of human rights because the government is making them homeless.

I heard about this on the radio but its so big, it doesn't seem to have made any of the papers. British/Dutch/ German or French, well not the internet versions.

I doubt these people are looking for jobs if it is the squat I'm thinking of, its an alternative lifestyle. Its nothing to get ones knickers in a twist. Denmark is a fucking rich country and if you can't find a job in Denmark, you don't want one.

pahunkboy -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/4/2007 5:32:43 AM)

The protesters are correct. Globalization is a race to the bottem. The peasant shall revolt. Hence the riots.

Other the washington dc- you seldom see protest- with the exception of california. [i seen one where everyonne there was a diff cause, no one on the bus even looked. -I asked teh lady on the bus what that was about- she said- oh- they are tehre all the time.

In teh US we burn down our cities when we win teh big sports game.

the anarchists- are attempting to stop the race to teh bottem. so- I am with them

the issue is slave labor- outsourcing. the bible says pay a man a decent wage for a decent days work.
ok- show me the $$$.   ya cant- the CEOs have it!

Dtesmoac -> RE: Happy Europeans Are A Riot (3/4/2007 5:45:14 AM)

Denmark is hadly awash with foreginers and the ones that are their are prdominantly of the same ethnic group. Apert from in Copenhagen you will see very little racial diversity.

The view point of what is left and whst is right is very different between countries within Europe let alone between Europe and America

If the squatters wanted the property they should have raised the funds to buy it not expected it for free, if they had so much support raising the money wouldn't have been an issue.
