Don't believe that this has much to do with espescially the US. Having had contacts while living in the States as well as while living in diff European countries, I never felt that it made much of a difference for the kind of applications one gets. Scams are always the majority. More important seems to be which server you are on (some are favoured by US ppl, others not). For instance, last time looking for someone using alt.com and CM produced far more contacts with ppl from the US saying they could imagine relocating to Europe than with ppl from any other country!

My experience is many people from the States have ambivalent feelings about their country. Many people in the States imagine that other countries are more tolerant and less bullying than our own. I suspect most of us in the sexual/gender minority communities have toyed at one time or another with escape to the Netherlands which is often seen here as a liberal Utopia. Others imagine France as less puritanical, Italy romantic, and Austria ???
