Anyone know how to get squirrels to take up home somewhere else????

They made a nest in my motor when my car was parked after my surgery.....ate all the wiring. It cost me a 1,000 bucks to have it rewired. I've only had it back two days and I saw one of those little bastards jumping up in there.....opened the hood and scared him half to death. Problem is in two days time they already have a pretty good start on a new nest.

Anyone know how to make my engine compartment a less attractive squirrel condo???? Trapping them isn't really a solution as I live in the city and there are more of them here than people.

This may not be a practical suggestion since you live in the city. But, if you have access to a yard of any size, you might want to consider building a small habitat. I know it sounds counterintuitive to actually invite the little buggers around. But, giving them a place to find food, water, shelter and a site to raise their young (which is what it sounds like they may be trying to do) other than your engine might keep them away from your car.

Animal Planet has a great program called Backyard Habitat. If you visit their website I'm sure you'll get lots of great starting ideas.

All the best,

MNN

I know this is going to sound rather silly to suggest but it may well work. I am really not sure where you can get it but I know predator urine is available and can be used as a deterrent to annoying pesky animals. The other suggestion is a generous sprinkling of Cayenne pepper all over your engine compartment may also be what you need to do.

I really wish this was posted in the Really, Really Bad Advice thread... LOL... I could have such fun with this.

Edited to add website link.

My cat did a real good job but she recently died and now I notice the squirrels are returning... That Cayenne pepper thing sounded like it just may work...try it and let us know?

Fast reply.....

Thanks.

MistressNoName, I actually have squirrel houses around the yard...that was suggested to me awhile back to keep them away from the house and they do seem to work. There is also plenty of food for them. It seems this is breeding season for them and as it's pretty cold here my engine compartment seems to be a warm attractive place. I would have thought that driving it every day would keep them away but it doesn't seem to bother them much.

Guage....thanks...I will get some fox urine today. One question on the pepper spray if I need to go that far.....(and yes I know it's a silly girl knows nothing about cars question...lol)....is there any chance that will blow in through my heat ducts? I mean I don't want to get maced while I'm driving...lmao!!!!

The Cayenne pepper trick is a very safe way to deter unwanted critters. If you think about it a little, most every animal sniffs around on the ground or the area where they are. With the pepper on the ground they will get a nasty burning sensation in their nose and it may upset them quite a bit but it is in no way harmful to them.

My sister gases the ones around her house, for the same reason, the little bastards love wiring and can even eat the wiring in your house and cause more problems than that.

I would ask if your house insurance does not cover what they did? I know in my sister's case they paid to have their electrical redone.. but their car is stored in the garage too.

Well that might be a problem and in all honesty I am not sure that it wouldn't enter the car. What I would do then is to get the Cayenne pepper powder from your local grocery store and every time you park your car give the area around it a good dusting with the pepper.

Perhaps it is possible to put a slight electric charge on your car? Using electric fence wire?

You need to make your car uninviting, try leaving a cheap radio playing under your hood, also get some of those cheap disposable led lights, and light up the area they're climbing into.

Light and noise makes your car very uninhabitable, and if that doesn't work, try either ammonia, or predator urine.

Dom not build a habitat on your property, it will only attract MORE squirrels, not draw out the ones already living there.

p.s. My Domme has a Bachelors of Science in Wildlife Conservation, this is her field of expertise.

Get one of those fake owls and park him right up on top of the hood.

LMAO....I don't want them mistaking it for the coolest new place to hang out!!! Any ideas on what station would be most unappealing???

But seriously....those ARE good ideas and I will give them a try.

get a high pitched squealer.  its a little speaker that plays sound at very high frequency very loud so it hurts their ears and is out of range of human hearing.  if that doesnt work you can slways trap them. if that doesnt work you can always soak some corn in antifreeze and serve it for din din...

good luck

Leave the hood up. They will go on to a new place after a week or so and then you can start closing it again. I have to store vehicles here with the hood up to keep the rodents from moving in.

P.S. Damn glad to see you are back!

Good to see you back, Erin!

Predator urine should be available where hunting rifles and equipment
is sold.  Mace and pepper spray are usually sold at Army/Navy surplus
stores.  In a pinch, get a dog to spray around your car, that would work too.
Anything that makes noise, like bells or alarms would also be a deterent to the damn varmits.

That would be my recommendation as well. FYI, a lot of time you can find BIG containers of cayenne by the Mexican food for less than the little bitty jars in the spice aisle cost. i would definitely put some on the exposed wires as well. A light spritz of WD-40 beforehand will help it stick.

As long as your car is in relatively good condition, there should be no direct airflow from the engine compartment into the passenger compartment. The air coming into the passenger compartment (as a rule) comes in from ductwork just in front of the windshield, and there should be a rubber gasket on the bottom of the hood to isolate that from the waste heat and potential fumes from the engine. Aerodynamic forces tend to create a vacuum underneath the car that exhausts the engine compartment downwards.

i would not recommend not spraying predator urine on the radiator or the engine itself, as they get hot, which generally makes smells stronger, perhaps unpleasantly so. i also don't know what effects it might have on paint. Might try a little on the front tires, tho.

And there are no weird questions... only weird people who don't pretend to know everything

Not sure if this will work either, but it does for alot of small critters.
Buy a few boxes of moth balls, poke holes in them and lay them under your hood.
(course your gonna have to move um when you need to go somewhere!)
They smell bad, actually irritate their lungs and they go by by.......
(just dont lay them on a warm engine, or drop them in loose!  Bad Bad Bad for you fuel system!)
