I have had city and country squirrel problems some places I have lived. I find that anything that helps mke life good for them including nut trees, fruit trees, or crops will attact them like a picnic attracts mosquitos. One place a neighbor liked to watch them so put corn out... but my house was by a favored power line so they ate through my roof and cost me many thousands of $. Have a heart live traps worked, most farm stores have them. But one must eaither transport them about 50 mi away or terminate them or they'll be back. There are many tasty squirrel meat dishes. Shooting them will keep numbers down a bit but more will come in as others disappear. Some of them LIKE hot peppers, Some do not. Moth balls is a good idea. Putting a box under the hood (with a couple holes punched in it) will keep the mothballs from being a mess and will help with the problem. If you do not have pets loose, bait bars for rats can work on tree-rats too. Tree rats will eat out of a dog's dish while a dog is napping, so while fox pee may make them alert, I doubt it will keep them away.
