I agree that crying can be very good for us, both on a chemical and emotional level. Crying can help us to acknowledge sadness, confusion,fear, pain, loss, happiness, strong emotion, anger etc etc etc. The difficulty as someone who may be seeing someone else cry is to stop ourselves from giving them a hug, telling them everything is ok, platitudes such as 'there there don't cry' etc as these can actually inhibit the emotional response. It also may be showing our own discomfort or unease about showing emotion rather than acknowledging the other person's feelings.
