College students think they're so special
Study finds alarming rise in narcissism, self-centeredness in ‘Generation Me’
AP report:
NEW YORK - Today’s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society...

Alternate Headline 2:  "So that's why none of the 20 year old hotties on here will talk to me" grumbles 50 year old father of teenager.

Alternate Headline 3:  "Damn kids.  I'm SUPPOSED TO BE THE "ME" Generation.  ME ME ME"  grumbles displaced 50 year old.

I am laughing at the headlines you offer...

I bet it was a Baby Boomer that wrote it and a Baby Boomer that did the research... Im sorry to all of you Baby Boomers, but the world really never was all about you, and sooner or later another generation was going to usurp you...lol

MsSonnetMarwood -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 2:12:35 PM)

I am special.  Thank you.

windchymes -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 2:16:06 PM)

I think all of us were "all about me" when we were in high school and college.  I don't think there's any difference now.  I think now, since we have (hopefully) matured, we look back at the next generations and see how silly they (we!) are (were!)

Emperor1956 -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 2:20:18 PM)

julia, define "boomer"?   I fear I resemble that remark!  Then again, so does Sinergy.

He does resemble that remark marginally...lol, we have had discussions about Baby Boomers, Sinergy likes GenX culture probably more than I do.

The Baby Boomer Generation has had their way mostly. Their shadow is rather long, and they are the first generation that left the next generation less than what they received. I tend to think Boomers do think it is all about them as a generation, not saying that all of you are that way, but because of your numbers it has tended to be about you guys economically and culturally for a very long time. Now many of you are in retirement you have redefined that too. It is not all bad mind you, for one you all have kinda redefined what "old" means.. it used to mean being over 40 was over the hill, now it isn't

I am not surprised when you look at their peers in the media.
Britney, Paris, Lindsey, Nicole, etc.
Look at what sells and who is popular and imitated.
Most of the young women these days want to be rich and thin.
Sign of the times.
Don't even get started on cosmetic surgery, look at the media.

No, I am a GenXer

By some definitions my Daddy is on the cusp of GenX, but I am within it by almost every definition I have ever seen.

That quote is a good distinction point. GenX expecting and needing something "left" for them or an entitlement. The Boomers "boomed" under the self centered but also self producing banner of Gordon Gekko - "Greed is Good!"

Just interviewed a young college grad, age 22 with a blank resume expect for college, which I'd most likely have to un-teach. She was willing to work for me requiring a starting salary of $80,000.00. Asking her how she would produce the necessary $145,000 of additional income to my company for me to break even - she was at a loss for words.

Exit advice was for her to seek government work. Its the only place where they don't expect you to produce more than you cost.

You could be right about this observation.  However, I think previous generations have always complained about the next generation.  Even though I represent the late Baby Boomer years, I am getting tired of listening to commercials regarding erectile dysfunction, taking enough fiber, adult diapers and medications to control bladder problems.  At this point, I don't want the world to be about me and I welcome the young generation to usurp this world and try to develop an open mind.

RWAble -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 5:26:48 PM)

I am not sure where I saw it. I will look for it again. However they said anybody that will be of retirement age 65 in the next 10 to 30 years is a baby boomer. Everybody knows wekepedia is the internet source for garbage.

Bring back the draft. Then we'll see how fucking "special" they are.

No, the Boomers expect that everyone owed them something, my generation pretty much knows the Boomers sucked it dry and sent it to China..

juliaoceania -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 6:30:16 PM)

I provided two links. Here is another
http://www.answers.com/topic/generation-x

So now I have provided three sources to compare to something you "heard" somewhere and you cannot remember your source. Ok, I was taught that if I was going to assert someone else was wrong about something, I should back that up.. not expect that they defend their facts against my own faulty memory... whatever works for you though.

(hint: it really is ok to say "ooppps, I was mistaken, my bad, the sky will not fall and no one will think badly of you for it)

My mom is from the silent generation, and her generation is one I have a lot of respect for. I have respect for aspects of the Boomer generation too btw..... there are just so many of you that your generation was like the sun and everyone else was just pulled into your gravitational field...smiles

Funny I thought that was your reference to expecting something to be left for you. What was it? Oh yeah; "they are the first generation that left the next generation less than what they received."

Sent to China? A communist nation opened by that great "Boomer" Richard Nixon? Sucked it dry? Apparently not considering the proliferation of young entrepreneurs I see daily. Maybe in retrospect it isn't the entire generation who believes their success or failure is the fault of what someone did or didn't leave behind for them.

We were left the same as any generation is left - opportunity. I have no expectations for anything, especially Social Security.
