I think part of the reason my generation is "narcissitic and self centered" is because all our lives we have been told by older generations that "YOU are the future" and "YOU can be anything YOU want to be."
In someways it's ingrained, imo.

juliaoceania -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 6:48:12 PM)

But old people are always telling the young things like that, and they always believe us, and then we wonder why they are so "bad"

I think young people are fabulous and I love them

I went to college as an older student and got along well with young people, and made friends just fine. I think your generation is much more tolerant of others by and large, and that makes them wonderful in my book

My mom is from the silent generation, and her generation is one I have a lot of respect for. I have respect for aspects of the Boomer generation too btw..... there are just so many of you that your generation was like the sun and everyone else was just pulled into your gravitational field...smiles

In the last half of the Boomer generation, the competition was tough.  It is also believed the SAT's were developed for entrance to colleges because of the Boomer generaton, not about intelligence but in a way to determine who is going to get in a good school or not.

I also have to agree with Mrs. Mernbeth...not counting on Social Security for myself in the hopes that I can live long enough to retire which will be until I am 67 years old and my IRA will be ample enough for me to live on.  Oh yeah, if I did retire, I would definitely go to college as I get along with the young people.

hisannabelle -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 7:01:57 PM)

i have to agree with there being ME ME MEs in all age ranges.

that said, i'm a college student who tries hard -not- to fit the self-centered stereotype. i know a lot of people who ARE self-centered college students, and a lot of college students who are some of the realest, most selfless people you will ever meet.

Funny I thought that was your reference to expecting something to be left for you. What was it? Oh yeah; "they are the first generation that left the next generation less than what they received."

Sent to China? A communist nation opened by that great "Boomer" Richard Nixon? Sucked it dry? Apparently not considering the proliferation of young entrepreneurs I see daily. Maybe in retrospect it isn't the entire generation who believes their success or failure is the fault of what someone did or didn't leave behind for them.

We were left the same as any generation is left - opportunity. I have no expectations for anything, especially Social Security.

I am speaking of manufacturing jobs. I do not think we will ever agree, so that is way cool with me and I am prepared to accept that you do not have the same view of the world... really ok with that....

Sinergy might argue the point more cogently than I can since he had his entire industry outsourced to China and India.. which my generation was the ones that suffered most acutely over this... so perhaps I am jaded.

RWAble -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 7:19:53 PM)

Okay, I admit I didn't have a TV as a kid, but then my parents were busy spending their money on republican wars. The generation before baby boomers got sold out by the politcians and we have all been paying since. Now those war mongers are back..aka King George. It goes in cycles.

I provided two links. Here is another
http://www.answers.com/topic/generation-x

So now I have provided three sources to compare to something you "heard" somewhere and you cannot remember your source. Ok, I was taught that if I was going to assert someone else was wrong about something, I should back that up.. not expect that they defend their facts against my own faulty memory... whatever works for you though.

(hint: it really is ok to say "ooppps, I was mistaken, my bad, the sky will not fall and no one will think badly of you for it)

RWAble -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/27/2007 7:22:26 PM)

You have been told that and given more than all the generations before you. Use it wisely.

Every generation was told they were the future.

I know I was narcissitic, and self centered at 18. Also it seems that the 18 yr olds of today look younger than I remember looking at that age. Hmmmm why is that?[:@]

Actually this comes as no surprise.  Harvard is located in a Working Class Area and fights between the Students and Locals is a daily occurance.  By fights I mean fists, it has gotten so bad that the University and Local Government are trying to mediate some understanding.  Several years ago Harvard Students would go to the "Combat Zone" Bostons Red Light District, they went acting like they were special.  After a few of the Students got killed, Harvard imposed an "Off Limits" rule.

I wish you well

A little off target, but after raising 3 kids, I think high school kids are the worse; self-centered brats around.

Study finds alarming rise in narcissism, self-centeredness in ‘Generation Me’
AP report:
NEW YORK - Today’s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society...

I have a whole no respect for higher learning. I did some, but not full time. My FC (Gorean for mate) is back in school full time and damn I'm glad I'm only watching the game. I'm not nearly smart enough to endure the friggin homework.........

Live well,

The Baby Boomer Generation has had their way mostly. Their shadow is rather long, and they are the first generation that left the next generation less than what they received.

At 52 I just fit into the baby boomer category I believe. Well as far as I can see the younger generations have far more than I had at their age, materially anyway. My generation aren't going to enjoy the pensions that the generation older than me have had and we don't have the years to prepare like the younger generation have, who have higher salaries than my generation had.

However, the baby boomer generation has been selfish and continue to be selfish. I just hope there is at least some inheritence for succeeding generations to enjoy after our generation's greed. I hope the younger generations aren't as greedy and as selfish. I hope for the best but fear the worst. Old farts wouldn't be old farts unless they were complaining about young people. Give them a chance I say. They can't do a worse job than older generations.

I think it's a hard topic, because I have no baseline of what people were like, before anyone I know was born.

I have two people in my life, that I want to make proud.
I don't want to flip burgers.
That's about my motivation for college life.

I'm much quieter offline than on this board, to be sure ... but when I interact, I at least want to have something to say. Most of the time, older folks that don't agree with whatever I'm saying, will play the age and disrespect card. I rarely know how to respond. I can only conclude that it's a damn fucking fine attack, because it usually does the STFU on me. I'm filing it away for when I'm 40'ish (assuming I make it) ... so I can use it on some young college puke. All comes out in the wash, you know. [;)]

There no more me, me,me, me than we were it's perhaps just they are a little more honest about it. Look at the divorce rates and single parent families and then ask the question are those choices about selflessness or selfishness?

Depends on why a person makes that choice. It would have been easier for me to take the path of least resistance and stay with my abuser, I chose to be strong and leave. I did not want my son to grow up that way... so in my case it was not selfish, but it was not selfless either

Dtesmoac -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/28/2007 9:12:27 PM)

There is no simple generalisation that applies to all, but on the whole I do not see that the latest generation are any more selfish than most other generatons that have been born since WWII. Perhaps the key point now is that people are realising that standard of living and quality of life in the West may not continue to improve generation upon generation going forward.

Until people have children I think it is hard to truly be selfless.....and unfortunately to many people with children still do not understand it either....

juliaoceania -> RE: College students think they're so special (2/28/2007 9:14:41 PM)

I am not a selfless person.

You know a couple of generations ago kids were born as hired hands and kinda raised themselves up, I think the concept that we should be selfless for our children is the problem.. people should not be selfless, they never were.

I am not a selfless person. You don't have to be but if you go without so that you can spend time with your children and / or provide them with a better start in life then you are less selfish.

Perhaps for many and not for some. To be less selfish and less self centered seems to me to be a good objective. If someone only thinks of themselves and whats in it for them then it is unlikely they will provide for all of the needs of their children.

Lots of people would agree with you, but as a mom I can tell you that I adore my kid, would step in front of a moving train for him, sacrifice my very life for him, but I am not selfless for him. Kids learn their place in the world from their parents and the sun and the moon do not revolve around him. He will grow up and have his own life, as he should . I did not have him to sacrifice my entire life at his feet, although I have sacrificed dearly for him.

A child is the most self centered creature that ever walked on two legs... it is our job as parents to teach them the balance between self and others, if we are being too much of one thing or the other, well that is not a good example in my mind.
