I've been contemplating posting a profile that subtly and tactfully hints at the darker side of me on a vanilla dating website.  Has anyone tried this?  If so, what kinds of results did you get?

Yes and it does work, for some reason your inner character is revealed by the so-called other Vanilla person with desires that click with yours. Go for it and tell us what happens.

I hear people do this on Craigslist all the time. In fact, I had my one "vanilla" friend who knows I am onto bdsm forward me an ad from craigslist last week, because she was curious about some of what he referred to in it. It was obviously from a Dominant, and she wondered about some of the activities he'd referenced  - he wasn't hinting, he was out-right selling himself as a Dominant. I am not sure how they feel about that, or if his ad got pulled or not. I am pretty sure hinting would be fine.

One could drop hints about things like enjoying "Sleeping Beauty" without making it clear which one you are refering to.

I am working one up for a myspace page as I do not want the casual observer to have any idea I am kinky.  References to sailing and my love of hemp rope and the tying of knots.  Things like my love of "looking down at my sweet pet and stroking her hair" things that any of us would scream kinky.  Saying I enjoy going to PE in SF is another  one any local would get.

You don't need to hint really, think about it if someone does kind of work out you have a submissive or a kinky side they usually banter with it, its easy to flirt and throw in a few references, if they like it it shows they are clever if they need serious directing then maybe the person isnt for you whether you were looking for a dom or not, just try to put as much of 'you' in the profile as possible without announcing it.

Well, I think that any "vanilla" dating (or general) websites probably have a TOS about that kind of thing (at least CM does). I'd just check the TOS at the site (the "rules" about writing and posting) and see what gets 'edited" - if they think something is "wrong" with a profile or ad of yours, they'll most likely let you know, I would think.

Hi, I am a slightly gothic and dark girl with many and varied interests, I like to read, swim, chat with friends, dress up, and other natural and normal things.  I seek a strong and confident man who is caring and already has the vision for our life together, some of my hobbies include:

stamp collecting
photography
needles in and out of cloth
volunteering to work with rope art
collecting mirrors that show my bruises
drinking the piss of the man I love...

something like that, they'll get the gimmick.

I've used a few sites not really dating ones more sort of chat and post sites and aslong as the posts arent offensive you can pretty much insinuate what you wish, as i said before a sharp mind will always pick up on something and i do have a theory that all of us have a kink its just easier for some to express it publicly.

Both my partner and I have profiles on the local vanilla website.
I can't see why you would hesitate.
I run my entire social life off that site and have met well over 200 people from it. We party together, stay at each other's places, help each other. Consider each other friends.

Most members of the local BDSM scene have profiles on it too.
There is regularly BDSM related threads on the message boards and lots of newbies come to learn about it all through it.
As did I some years ago.

Masterschild,

I would consider changing your nic if you are seriously looking, many would look at it and assumed you are owned and not looking.

Well, if Moderator 11 is on that site too, there is no doubt you will be visiting with her.

I think eHarmony is probably very, very "vanilla" - it was started by an ex-preacher. I could be wrong, though - I don't know anyone who has tried it on there who is bdsm oriented. Good luck wherever you post it, though.

I have a friend who met several men through jdate.com and made some of her interests clear with words she felt would attract someone who would at least be open to exploring non-vanilla stuff. She used works like "strong" "leader" "take-charge man," etc. to describe the type she was looking for, and ended up dating several who fit the bill, including one she married!

I've done it. I stated in my profile : "I am involved in the D/s Lifestyle and seek a partner who is also involved in such."
ETA: I did it on match.com, yahoo personals, and craigslist.

I met Master on CL...his ad was pretty explicit, not sexually, just in who/what he is and what he was looking for.  it was very straightforward, it wasn't particularly descriptive or flowery...and it had no spelling errors either
