Lady E's thread on 'what makes me wonderful' set me thinking about personalities and their paradoxes. Whilst one person may describe me as shy, another may say im outgoing. Whilst one person describes me as innocent another says i am a shameless tease and so on.
This leads me to ask :-
Do we all have paradoxical personalities?
Can you be for example shy and outgoing at the same time?
Or is it all in how people percieve us and their perceptions of what outgoing or shy is?
Edited to add:- Further thought is do we behave differently online than we do in real life?
So for instance in real life i may be shy but online due to the anonymity i may be outgoing.
Do you see differences in your personality online and off?

My personality is very different online....I'm more outgoing here.
In person...my family and friends tell me that I am shy and rather quiet.

In life, and in a relationship
I can be rather sweet.

Some times though its not diserving to the moment.
And of course I can be an ass at times.

Greetings All,

This girls personailty varies with the different sort of person she is with at the time. This girl thinks that its the same with everyone, even though you may feel comfortable all the times you figure out what to say andwhat not to say, how to act and how not to act with certain people. It may not be a conscious thing people think about, but just a reaction to feeling comfortable.

it's always difficult to assign "labels" of personality and then expect a person to be that label 24/7.  i think we can be any label or any label in between at various times in our life. in my vanilla life i am usually dominant but that is why in my bdsm and sexual life i am not.  most of the time i am somewhere in between. i can be sweet or i can be obnoxious. i can be take charge or ignore all sense of responsibility.  as long as i am honest, the label is secondary to what people experience when with me, regardless if it is in a life of bdsm or in my vanilla life. i aim to live simply and with integrity, it makes life easier.

I think I am shy, outgoing, slutty, naive..all depending on who you talk to about me.  I think its not so much that we are that different with other people, it may be more that others see what they want to.

I believe that we take in the outside world thru filters created by experiences we have had.  I can't see it would be any different in the way we view others, and make "judgments" on the way they act.

Well I am a lot more active online. By that I mean I talk/type a LOT more than RL. Overall I am much more social here, I sorta dread someone getting to know me in RL because of that... but oh well.

its all a matter of how people perceive you.

To an extent. If you don't say boo to a goose all night, the company you're keeping will not perceive you to be the life and soul.

Online personality is different than "real life."  My 14 profiles would dictate that (From Nigerianslavegrl69 to trannylukinfordaddy) Anywhoo my behavior out here can be rather boorish....Seldomly when out to dinner with friends would Domiguy say...."Hey Tom, I couldn't help but noticing your wife, Amanda, is acting like somewhat of a cunt tonight."
Probably wouldn't go over real well....Actually it may not be working real well out here either...lol.

One could say it's all a matter of how you let people perceive you.  Have you ever gone to a party where nobody knows you and created a new persona just for them?

The dichotomy of our biology allows us to be complex enough to not be expressed in one simple way.  That would be rather boring, no?  Two-sidedness is ever present in us... two sides to a brain, two eyes, two partners to a couple.

Different situations motivate us to be different.  That it appears paradoxical is just us trying to reconcile ourselves as an entirety; which at times seems impractical?

I think I'm pretty much the same. You'd have to ask someone who has actualy met me though, like GoddessDustyGold  or MzPam :)

It all depends on where I'm met.
Co-workers would tell you I am prankster, cantankerous, and out spoken.
Neighbors would say I'm quiet and keep to myself.
Family know's me to be on the quiet side.
Here?  dont know what you all think... but I can say that when I first came to
CM I sat quietly in the corner and listened rarely speaking up.
Now that's a different story!

to the OP....I think it is how people see us and perceive us whether we seem shy to them or whatever....however we should know ourselves and know that we have some traits that make us who we are and they would not be wrong in stating those traits about us, as it describes us. I like to think online I act the same in consequence with who I am offline (real life), yet I find myself more sarcastic on these boards, lol.

Hello,

I tend to appear online as a smart-assed goofball and loon.

So I meet a bunch of people from a game I used to play, who announce that in person I am exactly like I am
online.

Go figure.

i think out of need, many 'don different hats' at different times.  For example...nobody (and i mean nobody) at work would ever believe i have any persona of a submissive or lil girl.  There i have to be very 'adult' and assertive....nothing like i would be with an intimate partner.  When i parent, i parent....as an adult.  Most of my family are aware i am into 'something else' (mostly because i haven't dated vanilla in almost 7 years even though i have had plenty of opportunity to do so).  But none of them know this person 'behind closed doors' so to speak.

i think i am pretty much the same online as in RL.  i am serious when i feel the need to be...or more playful when the situation warrants.  But i feel these are all parts of me that blend to make me the person i am.

Reminds me of when i used to bartend.  i am just naturally outgoing and talkative so had no problem relating to both the males and females there.  Funny thing....most of the guys thought i would be the type into 3somes.  Wrongo!  But that is the conclusion they drew of me from seeing me in that particular environment only.  They had no idea what i was like in my relationship.

For me, i think the only one who will really see all these parts of me will be a partner i end up living with.  Then he gets to see the good, the bad and the ugly....lol.  And i guess that's why it's so important to me to find someone who can accept all my 'sides'.  Afterall, he's the one who's going to have to live with it in the end

This is real life.

You make a choice in how you project yourself, the dimensions of perception are just different than if you were face to face.  It does not, however, make it any less real.

You can totally bull shit someone face to face as much as you can IP to IP, you just use different methods.

I'd like to think I'm just as damned wonderful in real life as I am online, but then its difficult to know really, as its really in others' perceptions I suppose.

But I am just as apt to make smartass remarks in real life as here - even in an important business meeting. I am just as ready to listen sympathetically and show compassion to people in crisis in real life as I am here, and to offer any help I can. I am just as likely to show my mood here as I do in real life too - never been good at hiding my feelings I'm afraid - and that could be anything from depressed to elated, depending on whats going on in my life. I am just as prone to behaving like an ass in real life as here, and to being deadly serious.

So all in all, I guess (I hope) that what you read here is who and how I am. Well, aside from being a balding 55 year old guy living as a shut in on the 5th floor of a tower block in Slough of course.

I notice (how observant of me) that you have some inherent problem with my avatar pic.  I chose it for a very specific reason, which is rather personal, and would gladly tell you if you wish to send me an email without sarcasm or out right rudeness.  However, my guess is that that will not happen, as you just enjoy taking cheep pot shots for no apparent reason.

Which of course, is a choice you may exercise.

out.
