Aren't The Jam 70s? I'm sure I went to a concert of theirs in 1977. The Cure are the only decent band from the eighties though I'm sure they are late seventies too, could be wrong though. I've got a dozen or so of their albums, great band.

The Jam straddled the late seventies and early eighties.  Town Called Malice, arguably one of their most recognizable tunes, was released in`82.

I didn't know The Jam was around in the 70's... I remember them, but more so remember The Style Council -- I liked them a lot too...

I have way too many bands to list from the 80's I liked... was a total 80's kid... I used to order "Smash Hits" from England in an attempt to keep up with some bands that were not as popular in the US

Just a couple of old classics.

The Smiths are one of those bands you either hate or love - there's no middle ground with them. They're one of my favourite bands - the lyrics are pure gold.

Town Called Malice - in Britain, the early 80s were grim. When you place the music in the political context of events in that day (mass unemployment, the old industrial towns on their knees, riots in various parts of the country, regular strikes etc) it gives it an extra dimension.

i was a huge Duran Duran and Police fan (hopefully they'll come to Chicago this summer like they're saying on the news) ...David Bowie, Big Country, Tears for Fears, Billy Idol - love the music from the 80s

Duran Duran have played 'round England over the last few years - I think they pretty much sold out everywhere. I didn't realise Police still played together but definitely would be worth seeing.

they are getting back together officially on the Grammys - LIVE  Sunday night and then kicking off a tour which might stop in Chicago in July

I still remember spending a an afternoon with my school friends memorising the words to 'Can't stand losing you' by The Police.  I preferred Sting before he got all esoteric...... "I see you sent my letters back
and my LP records and they're all scratched
You'll be sorry when I'm dead
and all this guilt will be on your head!" .... bet I will have this song on my mind for the rest of the night now

Just about all the 80s stars ended up with their heads up their own arses apart from Robert Smith of the Cure and Paul Weller and even he did for a time. It seemed to me to be a time of the Narcissists (accepting that popstars of any era are prone to narcissum). Morrisey has yet to take his head out of his arse, as has Bono.

Though probably the most significant music event of the 80s was MTV though I could never bring myself to watch endless mediocre videos in hope of seeing one I likes. Maybe it was the video that made so many pop stars so narcissistic.

Yes, I heard they were touring... The Police was the very first band I ever saw in concert in 1993 when I was 12 years old... The Fixx and A Flock of Seaguls (aweful live) opened for them.

I was such a "Duranie" -- I saw Duran Duran so many times, I lost count, including seeing them in Hamburg, Germany in 1988!

I loved/still love The Smiths, The Cure, Souixie and the Banchees, Depeche Mode, Yaz(oo), Erasure, Joy Division, New Order, Ultravox (one of my favorites, talk about great lyrics!)... the list could go on... what a very nice walk down memory lane [:)]

Thank you too NG for the background infor on "A Town Called Malice" I like kowing the back-stories of songs.

of course it's always fun telling my oldest UM that all these remakes the bubblegum pop  artists are doing now were in fact done in the 80s. the horrid expression on her face is priceless.

Smiles... I have a friend who is a lot younger than me, I'm her 80's music historian... she likes to tell me about Depeche Mode, and I like to remind her I listened to them when she was a toddler [;)]
