Status: offline 		HE never talked about himself in the third person.
He didn’t trash-talk, taunt or hang on the rim. Down the stretch of the Kentucky Derby, he didn’t turn and point at Bluegrass Cat, and he didn’t somersault over the finish line. After crossing the line, he didn’t pull out a Sharpie and autograph his saddle for his business manager.
He never referred to his handlers as “my supporting cast.”
He never tried to renegotiate his contract. He never turned down an eight-figure offer by saying, “I’ve got a family to feed, man.”
His only tattoo was discreetly hidden.
He did no commercials for cellphone plans, credit cards, fast food chains or time shares.
He never had his agent issue a statement in which he apologized “if anybody took my actions the wrong way.”
He never appeared before a Congressional committee and lied about his steroid use.
He never dated Paris Hilton.
He was never involved in an altercation with a belligerent fan outside a club at 4 in the morning. He was never arrested for drunken driving. He did not own an unregistered handgun.
He never claimed he’d been disrespected. He never left his competitors in the dust and then said, ”I didn’t have my A game.” He did not attribute his victories to the glory of his personal Savior.
He was never a presenter at the ESPYs.
He never claimed he was misquoted in his autobiography. He never confessed to a double murder in the subjunctive tense.
He trained, ate and slept. He ran his races, gave his best effort, accepted plaudits graciously, went back to his stall and prepared to do it again the next time out.
I hope there is a lush green pasture somewhere with no more races to run. With Secretariet, Alydar, Ruffian and all the rest.

Status: offline 		FYI...my desktop and screan saver is a beautiful picture of a humble ,musculed ,gentle ,giant athlete......his name is BARBARO.....the other pictures are in my basement bathroom ,next to the stall (Sports ilustrated)

Status: offline 		It just seems so unfair, he's born and raised to do nothing but run like hell, and then retire out to stud.  Instead, he breaks a leg, spends 8 months trying to heal, and has to be put down anyway. 

I'm still mourning Steve Irwin, and now this.

The four legged ass, belonging to an Equine, is far more beautiful to look at.

There are more human 'asses' on Earth than Equine asses, so human asses have more chance acting out.

Although the phrase of being an 'ass'--the animal is really doesn't deserve the association with human behavior. 

It is my understanding, that Barbaro's remains will be buried on the owner's property and there are rumors that a famous race track where famous race horses have been buried have expressed interest in having Barbaro buried there. 

Barbaro's story is a bit different from Black Gold.  Different times and different leg shattered.  Medical care for horses then were not available, so Black Gold was shot and put out of his misery but, buried with honor and a memorial for the race horse who won his race on three legs.  So many other race horses suffer the same injuries but, their owners lack the money and or access to top class vets and facilities.  They are put down.  And, although Barbaro's shatter leg healed, it was infections and abscesses of the other three hooves and legs was what did Barbaro in. And when Barbaro's sweet nature had enough--the pain was enough and too much.  Then it was time to put Barbaro down.

Status: offline 		It's sometime hard to accept the facts of life, especially where celebrity meets reality.

The sad truth is, with the bad legs, it's best that we knew before that problem got widely bred. And since he can't run, and isn't worth stud... Sure we'd all have liked it if he got well enough and was worth putting out to stud, but when the insurance money runs out, what are you going to do?

Status: offline 		There is no health insurance for racehorses, only insurance for catastrophic loss. His owners were fortunately multi-millionaires. The fracture he suffered was due to stress not a physical defect. If laminitis had not affected his front hooves Barbaro may well have survived to stand at stud. He currently has a full-brother [same sire/ same dam] . I hope he has a great career.

Status: offline 		Barbaro actually would never have been able to stud due to the injury to his hind leg - even under the best of circumstances with everything going smooth in the rehab after the injury and as full a recovery as possible, his hind legs would never have been able to support his full weight as is required to stud.

Even without any possibility of a financial future with Barbaro, his owners still cared enough to do everything feasible to help him heal.

Status: offline 		We will always be captivated my his desire to over come the hard times he had in his brief time with us--never since the great Secretariat had we seen such a horse with so much just pure desire to run..... he shall miss him dearly ; but we take comfort in knowing he is no longer suffering.

We will miss you Barbaro....

Status: offline 		The was some debate as to whether Barbaro would be able to get up on a mare & support himself. There are several stallions with fused pasterns here in Lexington doing that sucessfully. I guess we'll never know.

Sucks to say but the TB industry has followed the Dollar much too long with their breeding practices.  I think in this instance if there's really a Big Dude up there this broken leg was his way of Culling a poor product that shouldnt have been used for Breeding.  Grrrrrrrrrrrr, I hate this industry!

Yes, the mares are artificially inseminated but they still have to collect the semen from the stallion.  They don't just hand them a specimen jar and the latest issue of 'Hot Mares Monthly' then send them into a room for 10 minutes of alone time.  They direct the stallion to mount a "dummy" which is like a large pommel horse and the semen is collected in an external recepticle.  The stallion still has to go through the same mechanics and experiences the same skeletal stress supporting his weight on his hind legs as if he were mounting a live mare.
