Burn more calories than you ingest.

You need to train yourself emotionally to eat right- the physical changes only take a few weeks.

Keep yourself hydrated with water.

Don't go hungry, stock yourself with healthy and good snacks like roasted nuts and fresh berries.

I could list tons more, but you'll find your way.

Your profile states you are 6'0" and 210 lbs...Well, since you joined on the 29th and here it is on the 30th and you now need to drop 125 pounds...I would simply reverse all of my actions that transpired over the last 24 hours that would cause such an extravagant and massive weight gain...Good luck!

out.

I am not weighing myself, but I was in a size 14 and they were starting to get tight[:o]. They are starting to hang on me. I now can wear my size 10 dockers comfortably. I started South Beach December 26th. I was recently at my Daddy's and he had not seen me in over 3 weeks, he noticed I was signicantly slimmer. I followed South Beach very strictly the first few weeks.

It is a lifestyle though, not a diet. It is a lifelong commitment.

I'm also on the path of loosing weight, have lost about 50 lbs or so in the last few years, just has become a bit more important healthwise recently for me.

Some things I find working for me is that I am not thinking of it as a diet, but rather, my new way of living. I am kind of doing the low carb/sugar thing, which works for me... making sure I get lots of fiber in my carbohydrate servings too, which given the fact I came from an Irish household is quite difficult -- I tend to not even eat potatoes anymore because I just can't be trusted with eating a small portion [;)]  Also, since keeping my blood sugars at a constant level is very important for me personally, I have found that I need to eat smaller meals, like I have some egg beaters for breakfast and like an hour or so later, I have a lowfat/low sugar yogurt, then lunch and mid-day have like an apple/celery and a piece of cheese or something similar. I also used to never eat before bed, but, discovered if I don't have something light before bed, my blood sugars spike by morning, which is not good for me healthwise.

I will say that everyone is different, you have to find the way of eating that works for you. I also know I have to live in a real world, it takes a little planning, but, if I think I'm going to be having something not considered "good" (i.e., desert on vacation), I make compensations throughout the day: Skip a bread serving, etc.

For exercise, I'm lucky to live in a city where I walk to work, so, what I've done is take the longer way home to add at least 15 minutes to my routine without feeling it at all... it is a bit hard in the winter in Boston, so, I walk through a mall or I use a stair stepper when I get home and lift soup cans while on it... hehehe(or take the stairs instead of the elevator works too).  If it's nice out, I go for a walk at lunch too. I end up walking about 45 minutes a day.

What also is working well for me is accountability. Given some recent health concerns (beginning of problems if I don't fix it now), I'm seeing my nurse practicioner who is also my nutritionist every 3 months and will be starting a nutritional counseling service through my health insurance (just over the phone), but, knowing I have some accuontability without feeling it's a put-down, is great for me. Also, my Master lost weight on the South Beach Diet, and so, we sometimes have conversations about diet and nutrition, He doesn't judge and likes me the way I am, but has been a great help too!

Good luck to you and I think maybe talking to a doctor to find out what you need to do to be healthy is a good start anyhow.

domiguy----hilarious!
but assuming there is a chance this is legit-----i lost over 35 pounds by drinking green tea every day---it curbs appetite, speeds metabolism and lots of antioxidants.

also, since i am really bad at making meself exercise consistently, to combat the over-40 "flabbies" i took belly dancing lessons which is fun enough to keep me going at it, and fits in nicely with who and what i am.

good luck.

One of my neighbours lost about forty kilograms during the past half year. He claims that he does it by eating scientifically correct. The trick is to eat all the ingredients that you need. If your diet lacks a necessary molecule, you will eat more of what you do not need to supply what little of the necessary molecule that they may offer.

Also - and these are my suggestions: limit yourself to two or three meals per day. Do not eat anything in between. Do not eat snacks. Do not eat after 20:00 o'clock (that one is from Oprah).

There is no magical type, though I wish there were.  You need to exercise and put good things in your body.  If you do that, you will lose weight.  If that is the true amount you have to lose, you have a long way to go.  That can feel overwhelming at best.  Trying setting small goals for yourself, maybe 10lbs, then reward yourself for that.  Once you hit that, then make another..etc..before you know it, you will have reached the goal that you had from the beginning.

Try to keep a positive outlook and don't get down on yourself if you mess up one day.  Just get up the next day and do better.

I wish you luck.

I think that before taking advice on limiting meals to less than three a day one should visit a nutritionalist. I have never heard of skipping meals and snacks as being a sustainable way to lose or maintain weight loss. In fact I have heard the opposite from this from every source I have ever read about exercise and nutrition. Snacking does not mean candy and chips. Snacks of whole natural foods like nuts and veggies are imperative to the way I eat. I do not think going through life hungry is a good thing. It tends to make one obsess on food and over eat when meal time comes around. I would recommend not going to sleep on a full tummy though.

Like I said, one should get a doctor's advice before eating in a way that can negatively impact their metabolism, skipping meals tends to do that.

Fad diets are bogus.  South Beach and Weight Watchers are the closest to "good" diets and they take a while.  South Beach probably will give you a bigger quick start, but it's harder to do in the beginning.

Learn the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates.  Only eat complex carbs and low fat proteins.  Be aware that, although there are 'good' fats, the chances are pretty good that if you've got 125 pounds of extra fat that you probably don't really need any dietary fat.  Don't kid yourself into thinking that salmon is better than tuna because it has 'good' fat.  It's still nearly 50% fat and therefore not 'good' for you if you don't need fat.  Learn to cook without using fats (if you find the food not flavorful enough without the fats then use a lot of seasonings).  Don't eat fast food.  Read labels, read books on the topic.

Learn the difference between simple and complex carbs.

I do not agree with no carb diets.  You just end up gaining it and more back.  Besides, ketosis (often caused by low carb diets) is a significant bodily imbalance.  You need carbs, just maximize the calories you get out of them by making sure they are complex carbs.  That means higher fiber so your body has to burn more calories to digest them, it means your blood sugar will remain more constant rather than the highs and lows that simple carbs cause.  Learn how to combine complex carbs to get proteins.

Better to be a grazer and eat small meals through out the day than big meals less often.  It gives the body the energy it needs through out the day and the body is less likely to 'store' calories (which means produce fat).

Learn the difference between simple and complex carbs.

Walk, a lot.  If you can't do much in the beginning that's fine, just start slow and work your way up.  But do it every day (twice a day if you can).  If you lose for a while and then start to plateau then do something to shake your routine up.  Eat whatever you want for one day, or skip a workout for a day or two, then go back to your routine.  But you have to burn more calories than you take in and need.  You can starve yourself, be sedentary and lose slowly; or you can eat balanced whole food and burn calories and lose it sensibly and a bit faster.

Did I mention learn the difference between simple and complex carbs?

Good luck with it.

A healthy, balanced diet.

Make breakfast your big meal of the day. You've all day to burn it off. Make it fruit, healthy cereals, fresh juice, toast, fish, eggs - whatever you like providing it's healthy and nutrious.

Dieticians recommend many small meals a day as opposed to 3 big meals a day. I go with three due to work commitments and when I snack it's fruit.

More importantly, you need to exercise. Try swimming three or four times a week.

It works for me and I have an appetite to rival anyone's.

You don't need to starve yourself to keep fit and healthy. A balanced diet and plenty of exercise will do the trick.

I highly recommend the South Beach plan.  It is an very healthy way of life for the long term. I've been following it for over 3 years now and my blood chemistry is excellent at the age of 60. It is very easy to follow because you lose your cravings for sweets and starches.  I strongly disagree with the person who said to not snack, that causes your blood sugar to drop and gives you cravings.

accept who you are- and dont hastle yourself- you are beutiful just the way you are. in the mean time  drinking 90 oz of water a day. dont consumer processed foods- you can have "SOME" goodies- BUT- keep fresh vegatables around to munch on. do a colon cleanse- 5-40lbs of you is crud stuck in ur colon.

BTW- i keep clothes of large and small sizes as i fluxuate.  i suggest you do the same.

-- walking is a decent exercise- even around the house.

once you get used to NO processed foods- your taste buds will come back. there are additives the trigger teh craving mechanism in the brain. you will gradually actually LIKE the taste of vegatables.

take vit c and e- most of all CHUG WATER ALL F_ING DAY.  do you hear me?

you must flush the toxins as they are harming you.

hi~ i have also been working very hard on not only weight but becoming a "peak performer?" i use many different approaches true: food, exercise, vitamins, herbs, alternative ways and so on. It is true there is no magic wand (and even a gifted Doctor that shall remain nameless? Yngvar, could only do so much. And oh brother did it hurt! Lord help me i had more stitches than a king size crazy quilt!)

There is a group of alternative healers and medical people that i pop over and visit off and on.  It is one of many "alternative answers" in alternative medicine section of yahoo groups and has some really good info at times. Personally i would recommend you ask your regular health care person before starting  any diet, exercise and yes even before starting vitamins and such. A hidden or not hidden health issue like high blood pressure can really be effected with certain herbs, vitamins as well as OTC diet aides.

Best of luck and i know i am not alone in saying we are all here for you sugar and some of us right there with you in our own struggle with diets....

Atkins and exercise.

Every day I become more convinced that fat does not make you fat, though it can harm you when combined with high carb amounts. It's the excess carbs in our bodies that do the most damage.

Don't eat all the sugar, refined flour, junk foods, and don't be afraid of some fat; our bodies need it.

sassykat -> RE: diet tips? anyone? need to lose 125 pounds. (1/30/2007 5:58:25 PM)

If I had to lose that much weight I would see a doctor before starting anything drastic. I lost about 30 lbs with cutting out soda and as much processed foods as I could deal with gradually, trying to drink 8 glasses of water and working out with a personal trainer for about 4 months. I mainly did weight training and some running on the treadmill & built up a lot of muscle which has helped get rid of the fat. I've maintained the weight loss ( clothes size-I went from a size 12 to a 3/4) for over 18 months which is a miracle for me. I also don't beat myself up for cheating a little (key word LITTLE).
