       The end of the world always sells tickets.  With the Mayan calendar running out in less than 6 years (Dec 21, 2012), I'd expect this to only be the beginning of the next round of hysteria.

Personally.......I think the end of the Mayan calendar is going to make Y2K seem like just a bad hair day. You can bet a lot Top Ramen, bottled water and batteries will leave the shelves in the preceding weeks.

yes i ditto this. its all a religious thing for those who deal in undercurrents.  Most of the population see it as the earth blowing up or something and that has no relevance.
