I was reading in a Science magazine some years ago which said that 10% of the human race will survive just about anything.....alas, not always the same 10%.

There is no doubt that the introduction of clean water and sanitation cut death rates almost immediately in Victorian Britain. Also laws outlawing the aduteration of food by merchants who were profiteering at the expense of people's health. It is difficult to imagine any other act having such an effect on the health of the mass of population.

It's an argument I've used against Randian anti-regulationists, many of whom simply refuse to believe that businesses would ever stoop to such practices.
