TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Republican Kansas Senator Sam Brownback began a long-shot bid for president Friday.

Or as this Rolling Stone article calls him:

God's Senator
Who would Jesus vote for? Meet Sam Brownback

Hello,

I kind of see this as the beginning of the end of the Republican party.  I predict that Brownback is not going to win the nomination, although it will be narrow, and he will then splinter off and take half the party with him.

Or he will convince whoever wins the nomination to have him as the running mate, which wont help convince moderate Republicans to support the party.

oh great - another candidate for my republican-loving, bible thumping aunt to support and donate into his campaign funding.

she's one of the nutters who believes dubya is doing a great job and prays he "wins" the war on terror. yes, she did vote for him twice.

Did you know it is possible to inject a tiny needle into a cell and suck out the DNA.  Then replace it with other DNA.

Do what you need to do to stop the family dysfunctional insanity.

i'm doing my best to convince my aunt the mountains of mistakes and lies dubya and his administration has heaped on the American public.

WyrdRich -> RE: Meet The Religious Right's Candidate, Senator Brownback (1/20/2007 6:01:03 PM)

Since the anti-war left is probably going to split the Dems, this guy is welcome to any religious right types he can get.

Make it a 4-way race.  At least it would be fun to watch the debates.

Ever since I heard one guy opine to another guy "Im starting to lose confidence in Dubya," I simply smile and nod.

Just me, etc.

You know, the pro-peace constituency these days looks like this:

quote:

Do you approve or disapprove of the way George W. Bush is handling the situation in Iraq?"

65% no
33% yes

quote:

All in all, do you think the situation in Iraq was worth going to war over, or not?"

34% worth it
62% not worth it

quote:

In your opinion, should the United States withdraw troops from Iraq right away, or should the U.S. begin bringing troops home within the next year, or should troops stay in Iraq for as long as it takes to win the war?"

19% right away

46% within a year

30% stay as long as it takes

quote:

Do you agree or disagree with those who say that adding almost twenty-two thousand additional U.S. troops to those in Iraq right now will allow U.S. and Iraqi forces to defeat the insurgency and win the war in Iraq?"

34% agree
60% disagree

And here is the most telling part of the polling that is germane to our conversation here:

quote:

"Would you be more or less likely to vote for a presidential candidate in 2008 who supports a timetable for the withdrawal of all American troops in Iraq, or would it have no effect on your decision?"
38% more

12% less

46% no effect

Now here is the link from which I got my information
http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm

I just wanted to point out, if Bush is right, and there is even more pain and suffering inflicted on us over the next year, it will even further erode support for this fiasco. If the information coming out of Iraq is dire at the end of summer ( that is when we should see improvement supposedly) then I would guess republicans will completely abandon Bush if they would want to get elected dog catcher... because either way their careers are toast. I hope the best will arise from this situation, but I am dubious because the same losing strategy is in place.... so your assertion that anyone pro-peace is in a bad position come election 2008 seems erroneous at this particular point in time, because even the experts say the bloodiest time is yet to come... unfortunately for our troops and the people of Iraq

WyrdRich -> RE: Meet The Religious Right's Candidate, Senator Brownback (1/20/2007 8:06:02 PM)

Is this the same poll where we found such disagreement not long ago?  I'm still perfectly willing to acknowledge that 19% of those polled will be complete freakin' idiots on any questions asked, to point out that 68% of the respondents don't think the Dems have any kind of plan at all, and to remind you that you can't add apples and oranges.

How does Liebermann fit into your paradigm of what it all means?

This poll was taken last week

WyrdRich -> RE: Meet The Religious Right's Candidate, Senator Brownback (1/20/2007 8:30:54 PM)

Looked mighty familiar, some of the key numbers were the same, but I think the other link said 86% thought the Dems had no plan.  I dunno, a touch of dyslexia is one of my fatigue symptoms.

and he has a large voice in the Democratic Party? Hmmmm, I was not aware that he was very popular with them...or with Americans in general. Liberman got more votes from Republicans than the Republican candidate running, in fact Lieberman got a whopping 70% of the republican vote in that race, what does this tell you? It tells you that  Lieberman is the type of candidate Republicans want. Now if your party puts forward Liebermans in the future, well I guess that is one option for you to consider...Although you are doubtful to take that many offices seeing that all the democrats are going to vote for their guy, and which ever way the wind blows is the way the indes will vote. Also, Lieberman was an incumbant, which gave him an edge to start with.

If you are hanging your party's political future on an Lieberman's win, well um, ok. I think that was your point in bringing him up... but I am not entirely sure to be honest with you

If the Iraquis and those from adjacent countries who support the different factions there are inflicting any pain, by and large it is on themselves. Why is that then ?
Yes I know I've said it many times before but it was true the first time and its true now .

I have no idea whether a religious right candidate would do well or not but it amuses me to hear opponents say dont select one cos' he/she wont win. Contradiction or what ? Think about it, think about it !!

sharainks -> RE: Meet The Religious Right's Candidate, Senator Brownback (1/21/2007 5:26:09 AM)

I come from Kansas and I guarantee that I would not vote for Brownback under any circumstances.  He is just another cog in the fundamentalist Christian stuff that Bushbaby is into.  If the Republicans get out of bed with this bunch I might consider voting for a Republican at some point in the future.

To me it looks like the 2008 election is shaping up the same way the last few have.  We will have a bunch of  people running that no one really wants to vote for.  It looks like the time is ripe for a 3rd party candidate.

untamedshysub -> RE: Meet The Religious Right's Candidate, Senator Brownback (1/21/2007 5:51:31 AM)

What is the purpose of terrorism? to create terror and fear and undermine people faith that their government can protect them and are infallible, but no country is infallible.  Terrorism is a political weapon and has been used as a red herring along with gay marriges and all the other t hings that appeal to ninja christians who think they are always right and everyone else is wrong, because they tend to have more money their voices are louder and people who need someone else to blame because their life is not what they want  its easeir to blame "those people" than accept responsibility that Candinates who sprew hate appeal to
and in the meantime America is destroying itself from the inside out Just like Rome and all the other great Powers of yesterday.  What is the best way to destroy your enemy? Set the stage and allow him to destroy himself.

btw Jesus would vote for none of them as he did not look to man to lead man anywhere even if you find the bible a book of fiction you will note that Jesus spent his time with people who were potically unacceptable including women and not the powerful men of the times.

Are you saying that the Democrats are allowing the Republicans to destroy themselves? Are you saying that the terrorists love it when we have elections and decide what we want because it destroys ourselves? Are you saying that pointing out Brownbacks background is good for terrorism? I am really trying to sincerely understand your point here.
