If you are hanging your party's political future on an Lieberman's win, well um, ok. I think that was your point in bringing him up... but I am not entirely sure to be honest with you

Are we back to that 'straw man' crap again?  The Repubs are not "my party," they just happen to be getting my votes until the Dems either self-destruct or get their heads out of their asses.  My registration is 'decline to state' and will likely stay that way.  If the candidate of the OP should wind up with the nomination, I'd probably wind up knocking on doors for Hillary.

Joe Lieberman is your problem.  Any notions the anti-war left had about this last election being a mandate for them get kicked squarely in the balls by his re-election as an Independent.  Peace Movement?  They don't have the political capital to achieve a bowel movement.

Brownback won't go anywhere, he's an "open borders" guy.

my aunt is rarely asked to join in family functions because of her political views but she doesn't hide the fact that she proudly displays dubya's pic on her wall ...yep right next to the Jesus pic.

I sincerely thought of you as a republican

Would you clarify that please? I think very little about this individual, or in fact about democrats period. I am highly curious about how he became "my problem".

In the future would you please refer to me as pro-peace, I like that vibration much more. I would most definitely rather be pro something than anti something. Thanks in advanced for the respect to my opinions.

I do not know why you dislike people who are peace lovers so much. But you know, that is your problem, not mine. Peace out dude!

Joe "Let's just pray the surge works" Lieberman?

That kind of refusal to accept reality is EVERYONE'S problem.

But hey, there's a small chance that Bush *can* actually secure Baghdad before the surge comes home.

Shame about the rest of the country, though, eh?

It's still failure.

oh great - another candidate for my republican-loving, bible thumping aunt to support and donate into his campaign funding.

she's one of the nutters who believes dubya is doing a great job and prays he "wins" the war on terror. yes, she did vote for him twice.

Sounds like my boss.  It cracked me up the other week when one of our customers went on an anti-Bush tirade in front of him, and he just had to sit there and listen for a change.    He kept smiling, but I could tell it really got under his skin.

I'm afraid I won't be able to accommodate you on that Julia.  Just because you claim the moral high ground doesn't mean I'm going to grant it to you.  I'll be happy to refer to you as pro-failure, or pro-surrender if you like.  I do not believe that the goals you support in Iraq would lead to peace.  In fact, I believe they would lead to greater chaos and much more human suffering.

Are you saying that the Democrats are allowing the Republicans to destroy themselves? Are you saying that the terrorists love it when we have elections and decide what we want because it destroys ourselves? Are you saying that pointing out Brownbacks background is good for terrorism? I am really trying to sincerely understand your point here.

yes I am because we are not voting on what is best for America we are voting on the illusion of what we have been told is best for America, and not everything in life is tied to terrorism. History just repeats itself over and over and we still dont get it. In the 50's it was the communist same witch hunt as now execpt now its terrorist this time around.  What has happen to our economy the past six years? the dollar has gotten weaker, our economy is falling apart, the cost of living has went through the roof  and who has profited from this fight against terrorism? not  everyday Americans, just a small select group.

remember the rebate a few years ago? people were so exicted they did not read the small print you had your refund reduced by that amount the following year. A persons personal belief does not matter to me as long as he /she is good at their job

I was being sarcastic.  Leiberman did to the Democrats last election what I suspect Brownback will do to the Republicans in 2008.

I dont think any of them are smart enough to learn from history, but that is just me.

Ahhh...  I see.  You didn't use your little <sarcasm> markers, and if I could read minds, I'd be playing poker in Vegas.

I think you have it backwards.  I would say that whatever forgotten loser it was who won the Primary against Lieberman is analogous to this Repub.  The loud-mouth anti-war crowd, with way too much time on their hands, seems similar to me to the loud-mouth religious fanatic wing.  There are enough to have some influence within the party base, but they force more people away than they can attract in the General.

The Republicans have already learned this lesson but haven't found a way to really solve it yet.  The Dems should have learned it back in '72, but there seems to be a lot of short term memory loss on that side.

Matt Tiabbi at Rolling Stone did an article on Leiberman a year or two ago.  Basically said he is a political creation who drones on what he thinks you want to hear, until the fog in your head clears and you wonder how he got his hand that far up your skirt.

The problem I have with Lieberman, if you look at his voting record, is he is a man without any specific agenda that I can agree with or disagree with.  We have enough weather vane politicians around, we really dont need any more.

The problem the Republicans have is they engaged in the most expensive witch hunt to dredge up skeletons in Bill Clinton's closet, and taught the Democrats how to do the same thing.  What they failed to realize is Barney Fife could find and uncover the skeletons in their closets, which is one of the issues that caused the national "Yer Fired" election.

Additionally, the Democrats figured out how to pick their battles more carefully and take out weak points in the Republican incumbents.

That's not a bad line.  The problem is, it applies to about any politician of any stripe.  That's the job description.

Hunter Thompson is gone, and his remarkable gift of making up the absolute truth left with him.  I care about the opinion and hit pieces Rolling Stone calls journalism about as much as you likely care about the latest info on www.hannity.com .

The majority of voters in Connecticutt obviously liked something about Lieberman.

As you said, time will tell.

This raises a very interesting question (and holy shit, it's actually still on-topic).  Do we really want candidates with a "specific agenda?"  Ideas and goals, certainly, but I would prefer we elect an individual than a to-do list with extra-white teeth.

Senator Brownback has an agenda.  My Magic 8-ball says he would appoint Supreme Court Justices based on whether they would overturn Roe v. Wade, He would try to amend the Constitution to prohibit forms of speech he doesn't like.  And like everyone before him, he would find that life is what happens while you are making other plans.  What's he going to do then?

The election season is still young.  I have not yet abandoned hope of getting to vote for a candidate I think would be right for the job and the country.  I'll take common sense and values over an agenda please.

Maybe it's been mentioned somewhere before, but the Repub's have a candidate in their midst who could counter the Hillary/Obama love-in with press...if they could convince him to run.
Colin Powell.
Has charisma like Barack--check.  Has political experience in Washington (and moreso-around the globe) like Hillary--check.
The Dems would harp over his military experience ("does that mean we remain in Iraq?"), his wavering  in WMD's (first they didn't, then they did);  he opposed the way the war was escalated , but seems to me the man was asked to resign over disagreements with his boss---a positive with the voters right there.
There is the question of age--he's gonna be 70 (although that didn't hurt Ronnie.)

Since the anti-war left is probably going to split the Dems, this guy is welcome to any religious right types he can get.

Make it a 4-way race.  At least it would be fun to watch the debates.

I always enjoy the start of the election process here.. it reminds me of the Keystone Kops.
