A quote that I just heard.....

"Anyone that is Great at what they do.. does it for their own approval and not someone elses"

Do you agree?  Or Do you disagree?   Why or Why Not?

There is truth to it, but not absolute truth.

Doing it for anothers approval doesn't have much to do with whether something done is great or not.  However, to be fulfilled in who you are, you must have your own approval or anything else will be meaningless.

LMAO, someone besides me is watching CSI ...

As to the question - some people I know do things just because they want to, they know they are good at it and they enjoy being good at it.
I also know some that are always striving for someone else's approval - no matter how good they are at something, and sometimes, no matter if the person in question is dead (i.e. someone always want's mom's/dad's approval, even if the parent has already passed on).

I wouldn't be presumptious in thinking I am 'great' at what I do but I do now I am very good at it.  I agree with the statement, I work hard to be the best at my career, not for approval fom my boss or money, I do it for  myself and so I can help others.

It takes an incredible amount of drive to be 'great' at anything and the best motivator for that is 'self'

OK, is this a trick question?  lol  (j/k)

i like the word fulfillment.  Take a world renowned pianist or chef, for example.  i believe they somehow feel fulfilled by what they do.  However, i also think they appreciate others' approval.  i mean what good would it do to play your heart out on a piano, or spend hours preparing a lavish meal, when the recipients of either are just going to boo you for it?  So i do believe they feel fulfilled in excelling at what they do....but also depend on others' appreciation of it as well.

Did that even remotely answer your question?  lol

the question can be answered in 2 ways:  accepting gestalt of context ala "what they do" or not.

If one accepts context is everything in theis medium of communication and "OP makes statement, we reply" and that in and of itself demands respect of context, especially when bearing in mind semiotics which are the skeleton and ligaments and tensons of all net/web communication on message boards and blogs, then the answer is "no" because in context what one person does requires no positive reaction from anyone else as long as they don;t fuck up and get sued or lose their job, merely mantain a basal level of competence (a Coucil Worker, for example).

Whereas any journalist, writer, cosmetic surgeon, editor, Director of Photography, artist or artisan of any sort, is completely dependent upon the reaction of what they do as per the people tey do it for just to retain their livelihood and MAKE RENT.  The context of what they get from the people they "do it for" and how much they won't get if they "fuck up" or perception of their skills/abilities/work ethics are (fairly or unfairly) subjec to the woeful tide of adverse or pejorative public opinion, which these days can swing on a dime thanks to viral advertizing among other things.

If one wants to be a sheep in the herd and ignore context, then the answer is "they do it for themselves".

Put me in the camp of thinking that a person does it for both.

I love what I do for a living.  It stretches my mind, even after 23 years, even though after all this time, the majority of something new and different (for me) being presented for me to take care of has happened in the past.  But there are always new things for me to learn to help me help others.  A new technique or a new therapy or a new approach to a treatment regime.  And when someone comes to me and says "I cannot believe what I feel like now compared to 2 weeks/months/years/decades ago" or a mother tells me with tears in her eyes that her 3-year old doesn't need to wear a tightly constricted diaper in order to walk...well, then I get their approval and that's great.  Each night though, when I leave my work, I have to ask myself...did you do the best you could today?  When my answer is "Yes, I think I helped at least someone today and hurt no one", then I approve of myself.

Someone can be great at doing something they absolutely despise.  For example Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his series of Sherlock Holmes novels.  He hated it so much he ended up killing off the character.

So the idea of what you are good at is not relative of approval of yourself but of others...at least in the sense in that it is what you will be 'known' for...

i.e. A musical artist will make platinum selling hits...however they are greatest at cooking and they only cook for their family.  For those who know both, they know they are a better cook then they are a musical artist...

however for the world at large, the person's greatest talent is music.

So its perspective.  Always perspective.

I agree with a caveat.

We might do what we wish for ourselves, but if we understand the importance, letting others peek in at our greatness isn't such a bad thing.

Add to that Gilbert and Sullivan, MASSIVELY successful TOGETHER, always hateful of being less than that when working solo, and whom never really liked each other much in the first place.

i supposed the OP meant if you are great at what you are doing....and feel great about what you are doing....do you do it for your own approval or someone else's.  But perhaps he did not mean that.

When i worked with the mentally ill, i was superb at what i did (and was told that by both my superiors and my 'clients' as well).  But it ended up being very draining for me so i had to quit it, despite others' 'approval' of what i was doing.  So even tho i was great at what i did, i did not find it fulfilling (for me) so could not continue on in that field.

So if someone is great at something but they hate doing it...well then....why would they do it?  If not for themselves....for others?   *shrugs*

Interesting.

My first comment is..."of course not".

After thinking about it for more than 8 nanoseconds...I'd have to say...we all achieve for our own good...and with that comes approval.

I would disagree. I know alot of people that attempt to be great at various things but the measure of great they aspire too is set by someone elses ideal. They do it seeking approval or admiration and usually have some sort of insecurity that pushes them towards that concept of "Great". Example, my bestfriend who is studying for his seriers 7 (don't qoute that one) it's they same course to sell insurence but he always has to stress very clearly that he isn't going to be an insurence agent but a stock broker..... Most don't even care to know there is a difference, we live in Vermont for christ sakes, if it isn't maple, dairy, or the state of the tourist industy few people care. Even he will admit that he is ashamed of his trailer on the mountain upbringing and sees himself at the "top of the reef" like Oscar from Shark Tales.

edited to say;
that it is also possible to be great at something simply because it is in someone to be great at anything they have passion for..... The truism I like is "If you love what you do; you'll never work a day in your life."

i actually have a problem with the wording of the quote... maybe reading too much into it~

i feel to be "great" in ones own eyes implies ego stroking and the ego needs the approval of others, whereas to acknowledge one's own talents and skills as being one's "best" implies confidence and strength... to me anyway :-)

anyone seen "Gods and Monsters"?

About James Whale?

If he's looking down from heaven at this thread, I'd bet he's laughing his delightfully Flamey Queen ass off.

The people who I think were great did not have great egos.  Thinking along the lines of Nelson Mandella, Ghandi, Mother Theresa, etc.  They really were not hung up on their own approval ... or anyone else's.  I think it was Scott Peck who pointed out that an extreme need for self approval characterizes men on death row.  Very successful men and men on death row were asked the same question:  What is the most important thing in your life?  The convicts answered, "My self esteem."  The successful men answered, "Myself."  Any of the three people mentioned above would like answer, "The well-being of others."

So, I disagree.   The great ones do not cater to anyone's approval, including their own.

Hell no. Because there are far too many cases of people perfecting capabilities primarily to please another individual, gain public accolades or gain materially.

You make it tautologically true by defining great accomplishments so as to include only self-motivated ones. And you could do this in a tricky way so that people wouldn't notice at first.

But if we stay with a commonsense notion of greatness, I think the aphorism--an explicitly categorical claim--is bunk.

But, you know, thanks for asking, KOM.

The motivation would depend on the individual and the circumstances.
