There is a thread about this currently in Ask a Submissive, in which there is an abundance of links posted which will direct you to many conversations on the subject.  It comes up a lot around here, and there is no definition that is widely agreed upon by everyone.  Everyone has their own point of view, and many feel quite strongly about it.  I'd recommend you checking out the other threads.

It's like the difference between an administrative assistant and a secretary ... each job description is unique and it's the boss who decides the job title.

I consider motivation the defining factor; it's been my experience that submissives strive for a perfect union, in the sense of two independent spirits, entwined with each other, meeting each other's needs and spoken & often unspoken agreements are negotiated in sometimes subtle ways to find a balance that works.

On the other hand I've found that a slave's motivation is belonging - driven by this they abandon themselves to a greater degree than a submissive will, trusting that the other will pick the course that's best for both. I don't get the sense of entwined spirits being the goal, as with a submissive, but rather completeness, like two handfulls of water becoming one.

People's thoughts on this will differ so it'll be interesting to watch this thread.

I personally like to compare it to education and the lifestyle verses play situations.

The vanilla person is like a pre-school age child. They know alot about nothing, sexual or otherwise. Thus they experiment and wonder around trying to please and control everything without knowing how to do anything truely good, just like a child of that age.

Then comes the elementary school student. This is like the players in BDSM. They know a little bit more but just like to play as they learn. No commitments...no responsabilities. Nothing wrong with players so long as everybody knows they are players. Can either be dominant or submissive by nature, personality wise. They are not lifestylers because they have not made the commitment to the lifestyle as of yet. But they do play in the lifestyle you could say.

Next is the middle school student. This is like the slave and what I consider the first level of being in the lifestyle. They seek the commitment but do not seek responsibility. They wish to give up complete responsibility to the Dominant. Thus by defination a slave. If you do not wish to give up the responsibility then lets face it you are just submitting a part of yourself and thus by definition a Submissive. The slave knows more about the lifestyle than the player due to having to in order to give up the responsibility. Just like how a middle school student knows more than the elementary student.

Then comes the high school student, the Submissive. If you hold back part of the responsibility over yourself then you seek more control over your life. Yes you want to give most of it away but you still want to hold onto that little part. Just like how high school age kids seek to expand their control but are still completely dependant upon their parents for support and guidance. The Submissive wants to expand their control over their life more than the slave but still let the Dominant be in control ultimately.

After high school is college, thus the switch. The switch is a hybrid of the Submissive and the Dominant. Kinda like somebody who is bisexual, can go either way depending on their mood at the time. They generally know more than the submissive since they have to know how to dominate as well as submit. Sometimes they are independent and sometimes dependent, just like a college student who is independent financially of their parents and sometime dependent upon them also.

Finally comes the Dominant. They are like the parents. They do as they wish, when they wish, and how they wish. Try and tell your parents what to do and if they don't agree with you then watch what happens. Just like a Dominant, try and tell them what to do and if they don't agree with you then watch what happens. Same result. The Dominant is like your parents because they are the ones who make the decisions for all those who are under their care. They are just like your parents in the sense that they guide, educate, punish, and take care of your needs/wants/desires. They are the ones who form you into what you are. Think about how your parents formed you into what you are.

Your parents took care of your needs according to their standards of what they thought is/was appropriate for you. And by meeting those needs you turned around and pleased them by fulfilling their needs/wants/desires. After all if a slave's/Submissive's needs are not met what happens? Rebellion. But if they are met then what happens? Devotion. And if a Dominant's needs are not met what happens? The slave or Submissive is tossed to the side and they find a new one to meet their needs.

Poly households are slightly different in the sense there is a hiarchy among the slaves/Submissives. But also in the sense that the Dominant does not toss to the side the slave/Submissive that is not meeting all of the Dominant's needs. The Dominant instead adds to the family unit by acquiring another slave/Submissive in order to meet the Dominant's needs or even one of the slave's/Submissive's needs.

Can people skip grades? Yes just like in real life how people skip grades. Some people are just pure geniuses, just ask any Dominant what they think of something. Are they right all the time? No, even geniuses make mistakes no matter how smart they think they are. Even your parents make mistakes, break down, cry, hold everything in, etc.

Just remember also that just because a slave/Submissive submits to one does not mean they will submit to another equally. And my grade school analysis has nothing to do with intelligence or capabilities. But more about the level of reponsibility and/or control one wants to maintain or give up to another. When you play you are not giving up control or responsibility, its just that play, no matter how knowledgable you have become.

All this is just my opinion on the matter, no offense to anybody that might disagree.

People can get too hung up over the semantics of these two labels.  For me, i say, "What difference does it make?"  Call me, "slave", call me "submissive", call me "whore", call me "joy".    i don't need to have a label attached to me to be who i am and enjoy what i do.

People are always asking others to define the difference between a "submissive" and a "slave" and they go on and on about it.  And, i say, "What does it matter?"  It is just a name and a name won't (or, at least, shouldn't) change who you are inside.  For me, i know i am a slave, but i never used that term until i came onto CollerMe and that was only because i had to choose a label when setting up my profile and because my current Master likes to call me His slave.

If you're asking because you are just curious about why some people call themself a slave rather than a submissive, i suppose you are best off asking each person because each one will have a different answer.  If you are trying to answer the question for yourself, i would say just be yourself and do whatever you feel is right for you and don't worry about the label or having to fit yourself into one category or another.

Try defining "blonde" or "classy" and you will get the point.

Of the two, blonde is easier.  But you never hear anyone asking, "Might I be blonde?"

The problem with coming up with any one set definition of what a slave verses a submissive is is that like everybody points out the lines are blurred, because of no set definition of what one verses the other is.

If you look in the dictionary then it basically says that a slave is a person that is owned by another person. Unless you come from a culture that still believes in paying for people willingly or not then nobody on here is by definition a slave. Thus the monetary state by definition of ownership must be replaced with the mental state of ownership or by a sort of legal binding contract such as a marriage contract. The problem is that there is no definition of submissive also. By basic definition it is somebody who submits to another. Thus all slaves in reality are submissives but not all submissives are slaves.

So the question becomes if you are mentally bound to somebody are you their slave or just a submissive. By definition you would be just submissive and not a slave since you have no binding contract to that person. Since contracts can be broken at will nowdays one could argue that you are not technically a slave especially since you as the slave have the power legally to break the contract and to say no to anything you are told to do. Again nobody who considers themselves a slave can argue that this is not true despite what they say or wish. Thus both the mental state and contractual state of ownership do have their flaws.

The only definition that would be valid is the definition provided by the administrators of Collarme, after all they are the ones who own and created the website. Since they have provided no clear cut definition of what a slave is verses a submissive nor do they police the issue let alone the issue of whether or not you are a couple verses a single male or female this leaves it open for the individual person to decide what they wish the definition to be.

Ask 20 different people something you will get 20 different answers, unless there are clear cut rules by which to follow. Even then you will still get different answers because people do not like to follow the rules 100% of the time. Just look at the single issue and how many people put single yet then in their profile put owned by so and so. If you are owned then you have a commitment. And if you have a commitment to somebody you are no longer single. Single by definition means one. Couple by definition means two or for ease more than one. Otherwise you would have to have a several category for all the poly people.

That is my final say on the subject, hopefully.
