Several posters have asked you this, why does he not get a hearing aid?
They have some really great ones available these days, and some are
undetecable.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Speak up Jali... (1/14/2007 12:13:48 AM)

Speaking as someone who is partially deaf herself, I had to train myself growing up to speak "normal tones" and to modify my voice based on the vibrations I was feeling- not the tone I felt I needed to go to.

I also learned to read body language very well, learned how to communicate with actual sign language AND "generic signs for the masses" and heck half the time I have no idea what's going on but nod, smile and do a lot of "hmms" and either have someone catch me up later or forget about it- I hardly ever miss anything.

So I'd say try and take this approach before going for the "louder" thing.  Oh, and always have CDs in the car- unless there's just you and the driver, I find it's just a pain to try and have conversations in a car.

ALso, it's rarely loudness that's the issue- it's the vibration.  Focus on making your sounds more pronounced.  Instead of saying "Louder!" in a louder tone, just say "low-der" slowly and exagerratingly.  This can be frustrating and takes patience, but I find it more effective than just getting LOUDER!

And finally- take up singing.  Work on your diaphragm muscles to help enunciate and be able to control your tone and projection.  Focus on what sounds you already make and train yourself to be able to make sounds on command.  Singing to the radio can help with this lots- if you can hear your voice more than the radios, you're doing well.

Hope this helps some.  Having someone not hear something I said that's important or not hearing them can be one of my biggest aggravations- it's also part of why I love cyber communication so much.  But getting louder rarely is the solution to hearing problems.

Masters says 'Thankyou Jali"
Jali says" My pleasure Master" smiling...
(I'm right next to him, like 1 foot away, ive just set some coffee down).
Master says "I said...thankyou Jali"

Ahh see I solve this by using signals or signs- perhaps touching my finger to my head and then towards them, or perhaps bowing my head to them.  They don't need to hear the words, they need to see my body posture and understand the signal I'm sending them.

I replied to that question...to condense it...we have had a lot going on the last 4 years..and Masters deafness has just fallen short of our priorities. Things are more settled now, so maybe this year we will look into it.

Like all in all, his deafness isn't a problem really....but saying that....It would be great to look into hearing aides as well.

At his work last year, they had these special earmuffs that cut out background noise, he said he could hear pretty well with them on.

Celeste: Thankyou for all the advice, I don't really know much about deafness, (his hearing loss in both ears is the same, high and mid range shot)as I said we have had other things to focus on....and I guess I just took Master for who he was including his deafness and it didnt really occur to me to suggest we do something about hearing aides as an urgent thing...but we have talked about it on occassion about some time in the future we would look into it but that future has never arrived so far.....I'm feeling a bit slack now for not looking into it before now..like im just thinking about how much Master loves music...imagine if he could hear it properly again..or we could go to the movies together...or a musical....but to me myself it doesnt matter Master is deaf.

Yes, thankgod for the internet, it really is an invaluable tool for us..we have messenger open all the time to communicate to each other..and also..posting on these boards helps us have discussions about subjects I've posted on.

There's any number of things you can do in your head to make it ok...it's your choice to consider it as a negative or not. I'm sure that there's been other conditionings that you've had to overcome in order to be of better service to you Master. That you should be a soft-spoken person is yet another condition. You can simply decide to and develop a "slave voice" that makes it easier for you to serve your Master because he doesn't have to continually ask you to repeat things or simply miss what you have to say. This would be one of those special things that you do for your Master and only your Master. It's SPECIAL, therefore it's an HONOR to do this...if you choose it to be.

Another quick thought:  Since I am hard to hearing, My Lord and I have worked out a simple signal to indicate that I did not hear/understand what he said to me.  Since I am to mostly remain quiet or to speak concisely, in an effort to not constantly say, "What?  I didn't hear you, Sir" I am to look directly at him, tilt my head to one side and made a questioning look.  This signals to him that I need him to repeat himself.

Yes that's true...

A few people have mentioned a private sign language between us..but I don't know how it would work with me being the slave and him the Master...if he doesnt hear something he just flat out says he didnt hear me and to repeat what I said.

I forget who mentioned this now..but someone made a good suggestion I took notice of ....instead of repeating myself word for word I could change the response so its new each time I have to repeat something..that would keep things fresh and natural hey. (so thanks whoever suggested that, that really struck a note with me as a viable option).

I'm slightly surprised that someone with that level of hearing problems hasn't learned ASL, or formed their own sign language to function better.  Repeating something is fine to a point, but really CAN get very aggravating and communicating through signs eliminates the "hearing" issue altogether, not to mention it really can waste a lot of time (ANOTHER of my peeves).

Even just a few dozen signs that you use daily can be an amazing help.

mnottertail -> RE: Speak up Jali... (1/14/2007 11:37:11 AM)

would you feel ok about stomping once for yes and twice for no? Deaf people have higher vibration sensitivity as  you probably well know.
