Status: offline 		This is quite possibly the most random thing I've ever had to ask and I don't know of any other places, short of looking for a suitable LiveJournal community, that could help. That or Yahoo! Answers, but who trusts that?

I dye my hair (black, if that matters) every 6-8 weeks because it grows fast and I really don't like having roots that show. To prevent it from fading and looking terrible, I use a good shampoo for color-treated hair. But I also have terrible, terrible dandruff and an itchy scalp that's always worse in the winter.

Would switching to an anti-dandruff shampoo make the dye fade faster or not? I'm quite proud of my hair and don't like the color looking bad.

Status: offline 		I would think that since you dye your hair every few weeks it might be worthwhile to use a dandruff shampoo for a week or so. I also found this link for you in case you do decide to go that route. I mean you can always redye your hair, but dandruff in black hair is going to really show.

Status: offline 		MstrssPassion makes a good point.  Possibly your slightly allergic?  Worth checking out.
The dandruff shampoo I think would fad your color if used regulary.  Possibly switch back and forth from one shampoo to the other might help in the mean time.

Status: offline 		dandruff shampoo shouldn't bother it anymore than a regular shampoo would.  Just check the bottle and make sure its color safe just in case.

I dye my hair red.. which is literally the fastest fading pigment you can dye your hair since it doesn't adhere well.

I use dandruff shampoo everyday because its one of the few things that keep my skin in line, and it fades no faster than it did when I only used products made for color treated hair.

Status: offline 		It's cheap dye, but I never itch a lot in the time immediately after doing it. Haven't done a thing to it since the beginning of December and right now I can't stop itching. I'll try alternating shampoos, though, and see how much of a change that makes. See, I knew the boards here were good for all sorts of random help.

Status: offline 		Hair dye chemicals are in fact quite toxic.

Im thinking it would be a benefit to cut it out for a while- soak up some oil-scalp treatments.

grey hair on a healthy person isnt icky. it is when the person has health problems and the yellowy sickly look takes over that is unbecomming.

this kinda goes with pick you battles carefully.

also wintertime the air is dry- running a humidifier could help.

i have used color back when sticks up the pillow case- and i breath it all night then. i died my hair 2 x. burns like hell when on ears. gee- if it does that to my ears=- do i really need it?

i recomment taking vitaman E.   E is scientifically proven to beneift the skin.

Status: offline 		I dye my hair a lot too and have found the colour fade shampoo and conditioners do not prevent fade anyway. Anti dandruff shampoos only stick the dandruff to your scalp rather than curing it. My suggestion would be to use a really deep cleansing conditioner which can be left in for a while. That should get rid of the dandruff but as for fade nothing really works.

Status: offline 		You have to be carefull with black dye, especially if it is the cheap variety. Sometimes it has quite dangerous, toxic ingridients.
How about looking into something like Indigo (Indigofera tinctoria) as an alternative?
You can find information about it in various places, just google.

As for the itching and dandruff try an over the counter product called "Scalpicin". I use it for the same reason and it works great!
You can find it at the drugstore or in a supermarket.
Also try a coal tar shampoo for the itching like T-Gel.
I put that on my scalp 15-20 minutes before I shower and let it soak in.
After showering I use the Scalpicin and no more dandruff or itching!
Try that I'm sure you'll get immediate results.

Status: offline 		T gel did NOT help my itching scalp.In fact it made it burn and hurt very badly. I had to get selson blue. It could also be a form of seborrheic dermatitis, I have it on my face and in my scalp. It causes itchyness and flaking just like dandruff.

Status: offline 		Dying hair constantly will eventually ruin your hair, whether you like your natural color or hate it (I hate my color 'cause it's so...no kind of color) then you should give it arest once in a while it will most likely 'cause problems if it's never allowed to be natural so even though you can fix something by changing shampoos, conditioners or whatever then that's just temporary solution in a way.

If I were you I changed shampoo/conditioner and I would definitely give the hair some rest and allow it and the scalp to be free from the harassment dying causes and deal with the natural look for some time. You could try Aloa Vera shampoo since they're very healing.

If you don't want to worry about the root and how ugly it looks you can make it look a lot better by dying your hair with a temporary dye which maybe lasts for 6 weeks, since your hair grows fast you should be able to get rid of the permanent dye pretty quickly so you won't have to use the temporary more than once/twice.

Many of the dandruff shampoos are made to deceive you. They do not get rid of the dandruff but tie it down to the scalp so when you think you don't have dandruff anymore it's only because it's stuck to your scalp instead so I would definitely NOT use dandruff shampoos under any circumstances unless asking a hairstylist first. (Sorry Lady E, the head&shoulders antidandruff thing is one of the shampoos that ties dandruff down to the scalp).
However I would strongly recommend Selsun shampoo. It is a very good solution to dandruff and is especially made to get rid of  it.

My 2 cents here. My sister is a cosmotologist and has colored My hair for many years. I too am red, the fastest fading of the colors. I find that in the winter My skin gets dry all over, including My scalp. I make sure I have a humidifyer in the bedroom. I use a massage oil in the bath and afterwards. As for the hair, any dandruff shampoo is hard on the hair. Try to use it only once a week if possible. If you can go a day between shampoo's that is better as well. T GEL works best for Me but it does stink so I always wash with the nice pricey shampoo and conditioner afterwards. And always use a conditioner on the hair even if oily, find one that works for you. Try to cut back on blow drying as well, that is very very damaging to hair, if you must, use a diffuser and try to stop before completely dry.

Status: offline 		curious question for ya MissyRane, do you know exactly why head and shoulders is said to tie dandruff down to the scalp?

My dermatologist is what actually got me started using it, and I've found that's its one of the few products (prescription or not) that kept me from having what you mention actually happening.

(just to be clear, not flaming or attacking or even necessarily doubting the legitimacy of your words.  So please do not take it that way.  Just curious because it would be me educating myself and doing research a whole lot easier.)

Status: offline 		My natural hair color is a very blah light brown. Thanks for all the tips - I'll look into the indigo dyes and am definitely buying dandruff shampoo the next time I go to the store. And if I can find a temporary black dye to hide my roots, that's even better.

The answer is that I used to have dandruff and I used this wonderful..h&s and omg I thought I'd finally found something that actually worked...gosh I was happy.
Then once I went to my hairstylist she asked me what shampoo I used and so I told her and then she told me that was like potion, it didn't get you rid of the dandruff but it tied it down instead and told me to stop using it because in the long run it just does more damage than anything else. She then ahem showed me an example on myself I wasn't exactly pleased..

The dandruff..pile.. doesn't show already but then after you've been using it for a long time the outcome is kinda yukki, and I didn't notice that the dandruff actually was still there tied to the scalp until she showed me and she told me that very many of those anti-dandruff shampoos were scam and that I should avoid those. She gave me this shampoo..I don't remember what it's called but it was kiwi something and at least it smelled like kiwi lol I loved it, it wasn't anti-dandruff something though but it was good to get back on track by using it..blah it was expensive that's all I remember.

Anyhow at least this's my experience and I'm glad I agreed to stop using it and I don't have it anymore anyway but I know Selsun helped me a lot..so yeah after my experience I look out for those kinda shampoos.

Status: offline 		I just find it kind of odd since head and shoulders (and I think some dandruff shampoos have this as well) contains Keratolytic which is used to help remove the skin cells and is the reason why I don't have the build up of skin and scaliness I used to have.  (Same thing you find in nizoral, the percentage just isn't as high.)  I know selsun doesn't, but they both contain almost the same ingredients.  Shampoos are really one of those things where some things work better for some people than others.

Reality is they are all potions, none of them (or any other shampoo on the market) are going to cure anything nor do they claim to.  So yeah, the person you mention is totally right on that regard.

Ick... its all so relative!
