Want a red pigment that actually stays? I use natural henna. I've done it for years now, and I used to have the same issue with my hair color fading. I dye it once every couple of months now, only to cover root growth. I can give you more information if you're interested (ie: recipes, instructions, pre-dye precautions, etc)

As I mentioned to someone else earlier in the thread, henna works. They make a black henna which you might want to try. My precaution - do NOT try to do a chemical dye after using henna - BAD juju. If you're nervous, save your hair out of your brush and try a sample ahead of time. There are a lot of places online that sell henna and henna powder. The henna has taken care of most of the problems I've had with dying my hair and I don't have to do it NEARLY as often (try, 3 or four times a year... maximum)

No thanks, I like to change my color and have different shades for winter & summer and often change my hair color on a whim when my roots come in.

That and red-orange would look like crap on me. I don't take chances on color I can't fix.

Greetings....

Regarding the fading of hair dyed red......wash in the coldest water you can stand....a tip from my hairdresser......works like a charm....!!!!

Be very, very carefull if something is labelled "black henna", as there is no such thing.
If you are lucky, it is indigo, which is a good natural dye. If you are not so lucky, it is a chemical cocktail mixed into henna. Sometimes those are really bad.
As for the "no chemical dye before or after henna", it is only chemical dye with metal salts that reacts badly with henna, other dye should be no problem.

And I can only second the henna suggestion. I have used it in various mixes or on its own for years, and have never had any problems.

In regards to the dandruff/dry hair thing..have you noticed as you get older that your hair/scalp becomes dryer?...IMO..You may be washing way to frequently thus drying your scalp out more, and using chemicals or blow dryer even contributes to this problem.Try washing less and using more conditioner..Tempting

For dandruff try using a vinegar rinse...it will balance out the PH levels on your scalp....the smell will subside as the water rinses it out....the only way I have found to keep my color longer is to wash my hair in the coolest water possible....keeps the the cuticle closed and color doesn't fade as quickly....
