maybemaybenot -> New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 9:23:53 PM)

What are your New Years rituals? Do you have one, two or a few? My Mom is from Scotland and she had these little rituals we kids grew up with and laughed at when we were young. As we got older we each adopted her rituals and traditions.

Here are mine:
Must have house cleaned, everything in order, no loose ends. Based on my Mothers superstition that the way you bring your home in for the New Year is the way it will be all year.

First Footing: The first person to cross my doorway on the New Year has to be dark haired and bring me a dark colored gift. A piece of coal is best. But could be black licorice, a piece of black ribbon etc. It is for good luck throughout the New Year. Since I am a redhead, I have to find someone to enter my home before I do.

Right after the New Year arrives, I have to have a piece of shortbread, which is always hand made and provided by my sister. Again, celebratory and for luck.

I have a friend who is from Mississippi and her ritual is to have black eyed peas on New Year"s day.

edited to add: after thinking about it, this probably belongs in Random Stupidity, please move if I have posted in the wrong forum

MzMia -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 9:28:07 PM)

Great topic [:D]
You must have black eyed peas on the first day of the New Year,
this will bring you good luck.
Now, I need to add collard greens, my girl friend from South Carolina
said that the greens are your money.
I can tell you that many Black Americans will be eating black eyed peas
on New Years Day.
In fact, I need to start soaking mine now![:D][:D]

I almost forgot this one. My sister in law is from Greece and she brings us Vassilopita, which is a type of cake. She bakes a coin in the cake. Who ever gets the piece of Vassilopita with the coin in it, will have good fortune the rest of the year.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 10:11:14 PM)

We live in NC and its part of our southern tradition to eat greens for cash in the new year and black eyed peas(which I hate) for change or good fortune. We do it every year. I also have to have the xmas tree gone before New Years Day because that was a superstition of my mothers to bring something old into the new year. Don't ask me why but I do that also.

TxBlkMistress -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 10:14:28 PM)

Well it was me, some wine and Dick Clark....but now Dick has abandoned me [sm=river.gif]

LOL...my mom goes with the blackeyed peas thing but I hate them....so if I do any of that I do the cabbage thing.

I have one friend that wraps money in cabbage leaves and keeps it in her purse all year...supposed to bring you luck in money...I'm not saying I believe it...but she is the luckiest person I've ever seen in scratch offs and pick 3 lotteries...lol

juliaoceania -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 10:45:07 PM)

I am on South Beach so I cannot even do my simplest rituals which involve food and drink... and taking down my tree hungover and full of hope for the New Year

so this year I will get up on New Years, take down my tree, clean up my place, and have hope for a New Year

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 10:57:34 PM)

NY's eve we have lots of food......  We eat, drink, and dance with very close family and friends; the lil ones run around the house like mad making fun of the adults until dawn, than those who've sobered go home, and those who haven't fall asleep somewhere; we get together on NY's day for food, hangover meds, and maybe play cards, than everyone goes home.   M

MysticFireTopaz -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/30/2006 11:04:10 PM)

My personal ritual is that I have to have all of My goals for the new year done by New Year's Day.  I have been working on this and it is rather fun.  I also do a meditation for World Peace sometime on New Year's day.

I will also probably have a small portion of black eyed peas and some greens.  I really never heard of this until I moved to Texas, but I'll try anything that is supposed to bring Me luck and money.

MasDom -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/31/2006 2:05:42 AM)

[:'(] Why cant we have a BDSM holiday rite after new years?

mgdartist -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/31/2006 6:01:40 AM)

It seems some, including the OP supercede "Ritual" with superstition.
Harmless enough I grant, but I can't help but wonder if, according to the video Julia Oceana  introduced:"TheSecret" (possibly also superstition...lol, but if not; ).. how giving conscious or subconcious leeway and force for these small things using the power of attraction to make them as reality in ones life for the entirity of the year?

I just feel the new year might be difficult or complicated enough without encumbering or having need to contend with such obviously contrived devices as making sure someone brings you licorice as a gift to ensure you have a good year.

pahunkboy -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/31/2006 6:08:51 AM)

mastermargarita -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/31/2006 7:51:42 AM)

Being born in southern Oklahoma, we always had to have to Black eyed Peas, and Collared Greens, both of which  ....yuck......but will eat on NY day.   used to gather with family and friends and have a NY eve party, then play cards all night until morning, sleep get up, eat, play games more, and just enjoy the day....sadly those days are long past me now.   Now setting up my own traditions, which will probably include the peas and greens.....

sub4hire -> RE: New Year's Rituals (12/31/2006 7:53:25 AM)

Having sex at the stroke of midnight.  After all what you are doing at midnight sets the tone for the entire year.
True or not, it is fun regardless.
