It's kind of nice to have rituals or traditions to pass along thru the generations, even if the things are based in superstition. My Mom is 78 years old and she ges a real joy out of her kids and grandkids carrying out her rituals. And deep down that is the motivation for myself and my family and friends joining in these little things. Harmless and easy enough to do, and brings happiness to myself and others. Not cumbersome or difficult at all. OK, now I know why my roomie asked if I had any black eyed peas in the house before she headed off to the supermarket. [:)] My mother was from the south, however, I don't remember this one, then again, good or bad, I missed out on a lot her families' rituals. Btw, the market was out of the black eyed peas, guess I'm screwed for the new year. Seems to me that starting the year off with A clean house A good meal A piece of cake and A gift from a friend ...sounds like a nice way to celebrate...any additional encumberance these things might add to one's reality is dependent upon the choice of the individual. As for me...Im usually pretty sentimental about holidays, but my New Years Eve ritual is to be at work, away from the unsafe drivers, making sweet moula at time-and-a-half.

My grandma always threw a handful of change in through the front door the first time she entered the house in the new year, and then we were not allowed to pick it up, it had to be left there, untouched, for the remainder of the year. She said that way you would always have money in the house, and if you picked it up, you'd be broke the rest of the year. She always made pork & sauerkraut on NY day, too.
