omg that was horrible..all my kids are out of car seats...Robert, obviously, is almost 12 and weighs about 100 pounds and wears a seat belt, Matthew is 78 pounds at 9 and Joey is 65 pounds at 10...Christopher is 6 years old and weighs 65 pounds...I wonder if they should be in a booster seat?? Being out on the road is very scary...we mostly take public transportation....

Krissi in NY the require ment is 6 or 4-9 and 60 lbs. ..in NC the requirements at 8 and 80 lbs and4-9 which means that my kids would have to be in a carseat typ eof thingy untill they are like 15 I would probably be casue to use one as well Im only 4-9 now and well Im heading for 4-8 any day now.. Im a mom of 6 kids i kept them in the carseat until they were by my opinion too big and behaved well enough to be trusted to sit like a big kid and remain seated in the car....The idea of keeping a kid that is in 4th grade in a car seat sounds like a problem not to mention that fact that well those booster carseats that are big enoguh to fit a 58lb kid in are enormous I am not sure that I could either pick on up or be able to fit more than 1 or 2 kids in an average size car...I drive a suburban right now but i usually have a small car ont he road to save on gas...but my older son that has just broke 4-10 and he is 18 toasted the engine! I honestly agree on keeping kids restarined in a car seat for their protection but there is a fine line between lunacy and safety! I am a driver that routinely pays the $100ticket when i used to get ticketed for not wearing my seat belt! It is in my humble opinion my own decision to make...it doesnt affect the way I drive...actually it does..If im seat belted I am physically uncomfrtable the shouler belt hits me inthe side of the head and the lap belt hits me in the stomache! Not where the darn thing is supposed to hit you at all....I had a car wreck 3 years ago and was severly injured becasue of the cseat belt...I will not ever have that happen again! I feel it is my choice and my decision to deal with the impact of the choice...I choose not to wear my seat belt I have a doctors note abot the double mastectomy and reconstruction...on occassion the officer insists on giving me the ticket I take it and pay it....very few judges will dismiss one of those tickets so i do not waste my time tryign to get it dismissed....Most police officers do not ticket me when i sho the note...so i have only had to pay that ticket 2 times and it is a $100 ticket..

Around here (germany), all of your kids aside from the oldest (and maybe the second one if you are lenient) would have to be in a carseat. Mine are all in 5 point seats, even the oldest at age 7.

Sinergy p.s. I read an accident report about a roll-over accident of a jeep in the early 1990s. 4 passengers, all lucid and buckled in and hanging upside down in their seats. The people standing around pushed the jeep right side up, and ended up killing all 4 passengers due to the spinal injuries the people in the jeep all sustained from rolling in a jeep at 80mph. This is an accident where yes, they got bad injuries from being belted in. I would imagine that if all 4 of them were ejected from the vehicle at 80mph their injuries would have been worse.

Sinergy sinergy being a 4-9 lady I can tell you what happend to met he last time i wore a seat belt and had an accident....I ruptured 3 discs...becasu the seatbelt doesnt fit ME right I am one of the few people that can be subjected to unnecessary injuries should an accident occur...I have had intestinal bruising with the last accident as well...I was in the er and had at least a weeks worth of excrutiating gi pain due tot he injury casue by the stress of the seat belt on my abdominal wall...the force of the seatbelt casued buising and i actually had to be monitored as if it hadnt resolved i may have endedup with a colostomy becasue of internal injuries...children are also at a danger to this . During the last accident i also had a nasty cut on my neck again fromthe seat belt .... seat belt ARE NOT made for someone of my size....and like i said i am an adult and since the fact that i have had a head on collision while not wearing a seat belt and had no injuried...out side of the usual whiplash kindof thing and was injured in an accident where i did in fact wear the darn thing...well i donot feel it is fair that i be peanalized for being built anatomically wrong for the seatbelts currently onthe market...what am i supposed to do?? risk firther injury and wear one....not to mention that now that i have spent more than 10K on plastic surgery to reconstruct my boobs...well honestly Iknow that the force of a car accidetn and the seat bel that the implants may very well either become displaced...or even rupture! I do not think that it is fair or even withint he scope of the law that i shouldbe forced to wear a seat belt! but that is just me...And so i will pay the $100ticket i got last week...and wellif i get another one i will pay that one as well. just my humble opinion! little red

During my Master and my accident in May with me as the driver my mini van's front driver side buckle released causing my entire body to hit the stearing wheel. This story that you put up, has made us think, that as soon as our daughter is out of her car seat that is five point which is going to be soon we'll be buying a new one that will hold her in a five point until she is much bigger. Thank you for sharing this.

I pretty much wear my seat belt all the time now. Not because of the law(honestly, I think adults should be able to select what they do in regards to there own safety). I got rear ended on the Interstate by a big dually truck, and I was in a little 4 cylinder. Anyway, he was going about a 100 miles an hour and fell asleep at the wheel. Knocked me clear of the interstate the car flipped in mid-air, and came down on it's roof. Craziness. ( I know what my last words will be, because I thought I was dead, they were fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, shit, fuck, while flying threw the air). Well, the car was smashed in the back all the way to the back seat, the whole roof was crushed but were I was sitting and I was hanging there. Undid my seat belt and climbed the hill and even walked the few blocks home from the hospital I was checked at. Anyway, I'm one that I'm absolutely sure would be dead if I hadn't had the seat belt on. Unless, you have some condition, they should be worn. I mean that was my only accident ever, and it was completely out of my control. So, it doesn't matter how good a driver you are, it matters how good the other guy is, and it helps if the other driver isn't asleep at the wheel. LOL. like in my case. I'm sure some deaths and injuries are caused by seat belts, but seriously doubt they even approach the lives saved in a meaningful number. I still think it should be a persons choice though.

Those instances are certainly not the statistical norm, but they do happen. My brother was in a head-on collision a while back. A full size van loaded down with railroad ties collided with the left front quarter panel of his Nissan pickup truck. After the vehicles were pried apart and towed to the impound yard, we saw the area once occupied by the driver's seat was replaced with the dashboard, part of the engine and the left front wheel. The steering wheel and steering column punched through the junction between the roof and rear of the cab and the seat blew out the rest of the back of the cab. If he had been wearing his seatbelt at the time he would, without any doubt, be dead today. Thankfully, he was thrown to the passenger's side of the cab out of the way of the steering column and all that followed it, but he still sustained massive injuries and spent months in the hospital. 999 times out of 1000, he would be better off wearing his seatbelt. He just got lucky that one time. By no means does it mean that it's safer to not wear your seatbelt. Even knowing all of that, I still think that people should be able to choose whether or not they wear a seatbelt (or a helmet when on a motorcycle). I also think that people who choose to eschew seatbelts/helmets should pay higher insurance premiums and be ineligible for state provided medical care if they end up requiring long-term care that they/their families cannot afford. The squeaky wheel gets greased, and if you put the issue on the table they HAVE to fix it to your satisfaction, or risk paying out a multi-million dollar judgement. Sinergy

My dad's brother in law almost died in a car crash because his seat belt wouldn't come undone and he was upside down and in a ditch full of water that was quickly filling Waynes Car. He was lucky he was not drowned. candle in the wind, i would think it would be worth the time and money to get a seatbelt custom made to your anatomy, since your main objection is that the seatbelt doesn't fit you right. It also seems like you have had a lot of serious car accidents while driving so maybe a driver education refresher would also be a good idea. There are ways of keeping yourself safe without just not wearing a seatbelt because it doesn't fit right. I have not had an accident or been in an accident in over 20 years but I still wear a seat belt every time I am in the car. It's a no-brainer.

Wear a seat belt but carry a knife in the car to cut it if necessary.......

Sinergy, i'm confused with this paragraph. Didnt all 4 passengers end up dead and if so, how could they have suffered worse?? What injury is worse then death? As far as seatbelts go - i dont wear them unless i'm in a car with my Dom and he says "put your seat belt on" I dont like the hindering effect of a seat belt. I have very good reflex reactions and can generally spot the crash seconds before it happens. Giving me all the time in the world to take preventive measures. i've been in a few accidents and i like having the freedom to react un restrained.

It is such a sad time when someone loses their life to a tragic car accident but the fact of the matter is that alot of people are strangled and decapitated from seat belts...

It's a no-brainer. it isnt just the seat belt it is the fit of the belt in the car... the shoulder belt is too high and the lap belt is too high..I wouldhave to have a custome made seat made in order for it to fit me properly...since i have already been injured by a seat belt the odds of me trying to further injur myself ...not likely
