Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/19/2009 9:24:33 PM)

New Quartet:

Rutherford B. Hayes
Woodrow Wilson
Dwight Eisenhower
Ronald Reagan

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/19/2009 9:32:31 PM)

Presidents following a major war?

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 7:56:06 AM)

No, that's not it. Nor true--but good guess!

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 8:42:55 AM)

Having made top-o-the-head-guess, my brain is struggling.......

Aren't those the only four presidents that did not serve in either the House or Senate before being President?  Oh, wait.... what about Washington?  Dammit..... I will NOT google... I will NOT google..... (well, maybe I will, but I won't post for the win if I do. LOL!)

No (Hayes served two terms in the House), but they are the only four presidents who could be on this list.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 8:53:18 AM)

Yes, I did Google.  And I see the exact answer you are expecting.  That's really mean.... and LOTS of fun!!!!  I doubt fluff will be up to that.  I'm thinking you should give her a hint, and even then, I don't know that would help so much.

What a totally obscure bit of Presidential history.....or I should say "Presidential trivia."

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 8:54:31 AM)

i don't do presidents...go ahead Lance.

You're allowed to Google in this game, Lance! [:)]

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 10:21:06 AM)

Pre-Google guess: They were all Presbyterians?

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 10:24:52 AM)

Post-Google guess: These four Presidents retook the oath in public after taking it in private on Inauguration Day, which fell on a Sunday.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 10:33:19 AM)

I'm taking a shot in the dark here, but I'm guessing these are 4 presidents who belonged to one political party at some point in their lives, but switched to another party some time before becoming president.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 12:51:56 PM)

What dcnovice said...... HMmmmm Does dcnovice reside in the District of Columbia and therefore knows ALL about the Presidents?

fluff: If a President wanted to do you, would you do him?  Seems unfair to the Presidents to not do them... LOL!  P.S.  I don't "do" Presidents either..... they're the wrong flavor.... as in they are straight. LOL!  And I don't do them in this game either.

The hint would have been - Answer has nothing to do with the men named in it.  2nd hint: oath of office.  3rd hint: day of the week.

Go ahead dcnovice (or should I say D.C.novice?)

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 1:45:33 PM)

Yes, he lives in D.C. and he knows a lot of stuff.  He was on Jeopardy once a year or two ago, too.

As he said, we are allowed to do "research" in finding our answers to this thread.

Well, I guess I'm up.....
New Quartet:

Lancaster, OH
Wheeling, WV
Dunkirk, IN
Washington, PA

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 4:52:51 PM)

No, we don't know yet if that's the answer MusicMystery had in mind. Could be something more obscure; that happens pretty frequently. Anyway, it'd be DC's turn if it was. MM will be along shortly, then we'll know.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 5:15:47 PM)

My bad. Of course, I'll wait.

I took fluff's statement of "Go ahead, Lance" to mean "Go ahead and give us the next quartet."  I now see she meant "Go ahead and give us your google answer, Lance."

My googled answer was: last sentence of last paragraph of page 8 of:

http://www.gtcentre.unsw.edu.au/publications/papers/docs/2009/2009_469_HighCourt_TriviaQuiz..pdf

where we read "Hayes, Wilson, Eisenhower and Reagan each took a private oath when Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday, and then retook the oath in public the next day."

That's it dc--because Inauguration Day fell on a Sunday, they retook the oath publicly afterward.

Hayes actually took it the Saturday before, when he wasn't really President yet...

dcnovice -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 7:18:51 PM)

I don't have a quartet handy, so let's use Lance's.

NEW QUARTET:

Lancaster, OH
Wheeling, WV
Dunkirk, IN
Washington, PA

Lance, would you please let us know when someone gets it right? Thanks!

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 7:21:03 PM)

i know that Wheeling, WV was the original state capitol, but i don't know about the others without checking.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (9/20/2009 8:20:29 PM)

Thanks, dc. And I will let the winner know.  I will also let the bad guesses "NO" as in:

fluff, not even close. <Hehehe....  fluff bit, and bit HARD, on the fact there's 4 different states.  Hint: MANY other cities could be on this list.>
