Status: offline 		pahunkboy....that is what I hate about this country....the "leniency" with which old people are treated....while I can understand in certain circumstances, when it comes to crime or "deadly mistakes" that cannot happen...I rather than an 18 year old who does the same is given a chance of rehabilitation than an old man who is at the end of the road....

why was he driving in the first place? why do these old geezers have to pay cheap insurance, and young people have to pay huge hikes even if they get a single ticket??? no I have had enough.....off the roads with these dangerous old people! At least re-teaching them how to drive might be a good idea.

As a citizen tho- i sorta resent being window/doored off- such as teh HIPPA privacy laws have done.

When they build an ice cream place here- there was a guard barrier so no one could drive thru the window. Banks are experimenting with "holding departments" for customers. [almost like being buzzzed in 2x]

i know 80 yr olds that function better then i do.

anyhow all teh extra doors in dr offices are heavy when one has intense pain.

Status: offline 		I think that elderly people may just need to re-take the driver's test at a certain age (both written and road tests).  It would not be a bad idea to have everyone re-tested every certain number of years anyway.

On a side note, the last time I went to re-new my license the woman in front of me failed her vision test 7 TIMES and only passed because she was given prompts from the DMV worker.  I left without re-newing, I did not feel safe leaving the parking lot at the same time she did......

Yes, I agree that as I age I should expect to retake my whole drivers thing start to finish including classes. My 83 yr old aunt has just had two accidents in a row. Thats what she needs.

The thing is, its not all that easy in NY at least to get drivers off the road. You cant tell the DMV anon, about a situation you feel is dangerous. I personally can not tell my aunt Im out there trying to take away her independance. Im sure people can say Sure you can! But its a lot harder than you think.

I have done the only thing I could, not encourage her to get yet another car and drive back and forth two and a half hours each way every other week, to take her where she needs to go. I care about her and I care about you, the people here who post. I care about people in general. So I make what sacrifices I need to to keep not just her, but YOU safe. And I can assure you that sadly, I am the rare individual.

Hon...you just said quite clearly...she got 2..."IN A ROW".

If you want to make sacrifices for your aunt...I'm all good with that...particularly if you find a way to keep someone who's had TWO ACCIDENTS IN A ROW....off the road.

(By the way...my preference is that they paid vastly lower insurance {I'm confident they could use the cash} and STOPPED HITTING PEOPLE WITH THEIR CARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Status: offline 		Actually I would be interested to see the ratio of eldery driver accidents to others.  Elderly accidents get more news, for sure.  But do they cause more accidents, per capita?  For example, are there more accidents caused by people over 70 than by people who are 18?

Status: offline 		Well, this will scare you.  I looked into getting hand controlls for my vehicle as I like to be prepared in advance with this  disease I have.
 
The purchase and installation of them is about $750.  Then you have to be TRAINED how to use them by an independant, certified instructor to the tune of another $450!  It's a very simple concept that a monkey could do.
 
I told the instructor, I'll look into it at a later date". She said "Just know you are an ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN!"  I felt like saying, "And I hope it's YOUR greedy ass I ram into when it does"!
 
So I keep to the surface streets and have narrowed my world to a 2 mile radius.  I can drive fine.. I just walk like shit.

I did some searching at NCBI (National Library of Medicine - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)

This particular study states that death related injuries (per miles driven) are highest among the 16-19 year old age group, and lowest in the elderly, particularly aged 85 or older. Elderly drivers are more apt to injur themselves than others, while youngsters are more apt to injure others.

LOL yes I can understand that.  I always cringed when my grandmother and Dad both drove as they got older.  But...you can't do much damage when you hit something at that speed!!  At the same token, some hot shot weaving around me at 125 irritates me, too. 

Anyway, those were interesting stats to discover. Having taken care of two elderly people into their final years, I have witnessed the extreme rudeness with which they are treated.  It was appalling to me, in fact. One lady reduced my Dad to tears, simply because he was walking too slowly (bone cancer and all) down a hospital isle and she could not pass.   Elderly people just move slowly.  Their muscles move more slowly, and their minds process more slowly.  They've been around awhile. They have lived on this planet a lot longer than I have, and have earned the right to slow down, in my book.  We'll all get there some day too, we hope.

Not an employee, no.  Just another ignoramous who thinks the world revolves around her.  Some people look at the elderly as a nuisance.  It is a pity for them, as they are missing out on knowing some wonderful people with a wealth of history and knowledge.

Status: offline 		Yup. Ownedgirlie has it right. And all of us, every single one, is headed for that same future. 

While my aunt did have two accidents, she too was driving slowly. She hurt herself more than anyone else. So this is in keeping with the stats exactly.

And to sub NW I say this. yes, my aunt had two accidents in a year. But My teenage daughter had THREE! One totaled car and two major damages. She cost me one whole helluva a lot more money in the process than my aunt ever has.
