i will never forget the older lady at the library who grandchild and daughter were hit, crossing with the light and on a crosswalk, and the person who hit them was in his 80's. The little girl was killed, the daughter was horribly injured, and the whole family was devastated.

i think people should have to demonstrate their ability to drive; both by moving and written tests, at all ages, and people who have too many accidents, etc., might should lose their licenses.

I agree, Candystriper, everyone should have drivers tests. My mother-in-law's 80 year old mother was killed while crossing the street (walking) on Easter by a 16 year old going 50 mph in a 25 zone.

Not sure what constitutes "too many accidents." Would it be just a number? Or would it be at-fault accidents? Or would it depend on circumstances? Hard to say, isn't it. I knew someone whose license was revoked for a year due to too many accidents and speeding tickets. So I believe there are already laws in place, depending on the area.

i am terribly sorry about the death in your family, and i'm even a little sympathic to someone only 16 who has committed vehiclar homicide already. i know young drivers are a problem; i have an unmentionable of my own. However, the hope is parents control them and they grow into the responsibility of driving. There's not a lot of hope that someone in their 80's will improve skills.

Yes, you are right; in all jurisdictions that i know of, a person can lose their driver's license under certain circumstances. Maybe new laws aren't necessary, but it seems like a problem.

No worries, Candystriper, it was years ago and I was only using it as an example. I just think since we have evidence that the eldery cause the least injuries and deaths in car accidents that jumping on the all too popular bandwagon of condemning those poor folks is misplacement of energy. While I agree it can be highly annoying to maneuver around their slowness, maybe we ought to practice a little patience with 'em. ;)

It isn't just the young and the old. There are drunks, and plenty of other people who will sacrifice YOUR life for 5 seconds of their precious time.

I finally learned how to drive and now I am aggravated by the assholes, thing is thoiugh, I used to be one of them.
