I don't think so. IMO, you were probably just talking to a fool who was trying to be hip using that term but really didn't know what the fuck she was talking about. I don't consider it a lie because it isn't intentional.

Edit: I wrote that before seeing your second post. Now I'm thinking he is both a fool and a liar.

I know it from the Kushiel books by Jacqueline Hardy.  In the books, "Joie" is a drink served at the Winter Festival and the word shouted before you drink it to wish joy upon everyone for the coming year.

I'll also add that the main character in the books is christened "Joy bringer" by a prince at her first Winter Festival as she is serving drinks to everyone.  Perhaps that is the connection?

No, "joi" is not a French word.  ("Joie" would mean "joy.")

I have no idea what it's supposed to mean.  I just Googled it, and all I got was "Jupiter Orbit Insertion."  I have a feeling that's not what she meant.

That made me actually LoL

When I asked to whom was it that I chatted with, he said that 'joi' is a generic D's term given to a submissive that "won't commit and carries her master on her sleeve".  No just what the hell does that mean? (purely rhetorical)

Kind of puts that glowing recommendation in a different light doesn't it? Pretty sure someone that is telling a potential new boy that "carrying master on her sleeve" AKA leading him by the nether regions is not only acceptable but his her kink isn't someone I'd look very highly on and DEFFINATELY wouldn't want giving guidence to someone that I would want to own.

interestingly, there is a myspace profile for "joi" who claims to love bdsm and fetish art.  Coincidence? or was her name really Joi all along?

No doubt that three months from now someone will claim that this term's origins date from:

1.  Old Guard

2.  Ancient European Houses

3.  Laurel & Hardy

It's inevitable on the internet.
