In my mind's eye, there are two sides of the story, to which we're missing some parts as to get the leading up to that question.
 
If I did have a slave, I could publicly declare them as my slave in most cases.  Having a good sense of humor, I have often told store clerks how much I could use a slave to help me with my purchases or help me with the house.  They just laugh and often agree.  It really depends on the delivery. [Grins/winks] And, the neat part is--it is true!
 
That said, there must always be good judgment.  Each circumstances presents a snap choice of what you want to say and or what you need to say.
 
Indeed, this lass may have been fishing for what response you may have had; as to come to a conclusion if you were a bedroom or closet Master or, if you could easily declare her as your slave in public.  The loop hole that is missing; is what is the lass' definition of public.  It could mean on the sidewalk, in a BDSM club or what. That is where the assumptions can go in every which way.
 
If given that question again, I would say "Yes, with an explaination" and then apply under the conditions you could say yes.

Another twist on this thought... should you declare your slave when passing through Customs?  For those heavily into objectification, the slave is just another sort of carry-on...
