Status: offline 		Last night a 22 year old student was tazed by a police officer at our local city council meeting because he refused to take off his baseball hat.

A few months ago I read about a frail and elderly woman who was at a police station to clear up some traffic citations and was tazed multiple times.

Prior to that I saw a story on the news about a kindergarten student who was tazed for being "out of control".

Are these types of storied upsetting to you?

Status: offline 		Well I do realize that they need to have options that don't involve deadly force...but these just seem very extreme to me. I've also heard that there are quite a number of deaths that have been related to police use of tazers. I just have to wonder what these cops were thinking. At least in the cases of the old woman and the kindergartener they couldn't have possibly felt "threatened".

Status: offline 		mistoferin, yes it is shocking yet not surprising....it seems police here have this "attitude" problem, granted not all of them, but they seem to be on power trips at times even when giving a ticket....makes me nauseaus....
whenever I have needed help from a cop (like when my apartment was robbed) or looking for directions, they are never around....they always seem to be there on the spot to give me speeding tickets....

surely a teenager wearing a baseball cap couldn't have been a serious threat to those police bullies? there were no reactions at your town council meeting at all?

Oh yes, it caused quite a stir. Made the front page of the local paper. See, we had a huge rash of fires over Halloween and so the council meeting was actually a room full of police officers and firemen that were "off duty", as that was what the meeting was to address. A new special unit being formed. The student is a straight A student from the state university who was there doing an assignment. When he refused a cop tried to tackle him to get the hat off. Apparently as he was falling he was tazed. His foot then came up and caught the Police Chief. The student is now jailed for felony "assaulting a police officer". It's creating quite a buzz around town. The incident is "under investigation".

oh wow....thank you for clarifying that.....although that is so typical what the cops do....if you dare act surprise or whatever, the cops will add that of "resisting arrest" etc....which is a bunch of BS in my opinion and should only be used against real trouble makers like rioters out of control. I can't help it, seems every day I have less respect for most police officers....

Status: offline 		I guess I'm biased against police. The few times I've been personally pulled over 2 out of three times were for made up crap didn't get a ticket but was still annoying. Used to work at place that let out at 1:00 or 1:30 am can't remember anymore, but since it was close to bar closing time they'd just make up shit to pull people over. You know didn't use blinker crap like that. Another time as a teenager a cop just started searching my friends car without asking permission because we were at a fast food restaurant after closed, well duh they frickin worked their.  Cops are people and as such prone to lying, and all the rest of the good qualities such as power trips. And the only time I've ever could of used police assistance they have done absolutely nothing.

I'd prefer as few cops around as possible.

Hi Erin....

I could write twenty paragraphs on cops. But I'll just say there's way to many of them. I've never needed a ''cop'' for a problem I could have taken care of myself.

But I see the district attorney / grand jury process as way more of a problem than the cops.

Status: offline 		Unfortunatly, many who wear a uniform become elusioned with a power trip. How often do you see a cop drive below or at the speed limit?

i wonder if since all these places wont allow emself to be photographed if tasers are allowed?

Actually, there has been a fair number of fatalities caused by the use of police tazers. For some, it can be lethal force.

Status: offline 		i am a police dispatcher and 911 operator....every call an officer goes on could be his last. when people think of the police it is always in a bad light...how bout the ones that go into burning buildings and rescue people...how bout the ones that have been blown away on routine traffic stops. how bout the one that responds to a domestic call and is shot as he stands at the door. Remember these men  and woman never know what they are reponding to or what they will find when they arrive.
NO they shouldn't have used a tazer because someone wouldn't take off a cap...but maybe the question should be asked, where is the respect for authority? Why didn't he remove the hat as he was asked....i see the problem as being a lack of respect for authority and unfortunately i think that begins at home.

Status: offline 		eroticangel, I didn't mean to even IMPLY a lack of respect for the police. I know that in my city there have been huge cutbacks to the police force and those who remain are terribly overworked and underpaid. I do understand the risks they take. Being Irish and Catholic I can assure you that I come from a long line of cops and firemen. My own son is a fireman. But no amount of overwork or inferior pay should have resulted in the poor decisions made by the officers in the situations I referred to. Yes, I do agree there is a lack of respect for authority...and yes...that starts at home. But disrespect is not a valid reason to use physical force. I come across disrespectful people often in public...rude clerks and waitstaff...mouthy juveniles...and yes I've even had the misfortune of meeting rude law enforcement personnel. However, their rudeness does not give me license to physically assault them.

Status: offline 		eroticangel.....AMEN to that!  I was on the phone with a shooter when he gunned down three of my officers.  As far as I'm concerned, the cops are outgunned, so ANY equipment that is effective in keeping them safe should be theirs.  Yes, I also admit there have been instances of officers abusing them, but as you stated, the only time you hear about the cops is in a bad light.....I hate the media.....always there when a cop screws up, but never there when the officer who ran into the burning building comes out with a baby in his arms......

I also agree that respect for authority starts at home....I got my ass beat as a kid if I needed it, and turned out OK.....that's what we need today.  When I was a cop, if I was dealing with a juvenile who told me not to call Mom, you can bet I did.....she would do worse than any judge or juvie officer would do!

So, that's my 2 cents......

Status: offline 		I live in a law and order town. I am sad that I very well may have to move as my place is being sold.  I simply can not afford this zip code any longer.

The flip side of watching my p s and q -s -is i seldom worry about crime here.  the people know if you mess up you will pay.

my brotehr was a 911 dispacher, I have a cousin who is chief of police in another state. Naturally they cant say too much- but the amount they coulod say was pretty frightening.

to anyone that thinks it is a cakewalk- pick a city. say Chicago- listen to teh scanner over the internet on a friday or saturday night. it is non stop.

ON THE OTHER hand. there are 2 justice systems. one if you have $$$$$. one if you dont.

the system can and does go on witch hunts.

just my opinion.

Status: offline 		Cops represent the corporate interests of the cities they work for - little better than rent a cops, but most often with guns and attitudes.

What ever happened to elected officials like sheriffs? We need accountability that leads directly to the people not back to bureaucrats.

I hate cops as a rule. And fairly so in my opinion.
