This has nothing to do with a projection toward talent in the '08 draft. The Browns saw an opportunity to get a guy they feel is a franchise QB now and they need one now, so they jumped on it.

Also, there's really no telling who will be next year's Jamarcus Russell -- last year at this time, everyone thought it would be Brady Quinn and nobody even considered that Russell would come out a year early. Plus most GMs have no idea where they will be picking the next year. So nobody has crystal ball projections for the next year that drive their decisions this year.

Status: offline 		If you told me that a team like San Diego felt they were one player away, and that player was a left tackle, then Joe Thomas at #3 would make sense. You would have to add all of Philip Rivers' passing yards as a benefit to the pick.
 
For a team like Cleveland, with many problems, it would have made more sense to trade out of that pick and get a bunch of extra picks, then select a tackle like Arron Spears or Justin Blalock in the second round. You know, Cleveland still has crummy guards ... still has a marginal receiving corps and is still staking the running game on a pretty old back with a lot of miles on his legs. Lets not even mention Cleveland's defense.
 
I think Brady Quinn is going to be good. He seems like a guy that will do whatever it takes to get better and correct his flaws. That said, he didn't really go at #22. He went for whatever Dallas gets next season in terms of Cleveland's pick, and my guess is that it will end up being very high in the draft.

The worst move any NFL team can make is to bank on the worng QB coming out of college. (No.1 Draft pick and big bucks: Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, Tim Couch, etc.)

The Ravens got Troy Smith in the 5th round, and in College he was as good as anybody. I'm rooting for him to succeed b/c I alway pull for the short guys. Maybe he'll be a Jeff Garcia type with a better arm.

Overall an interesting QB class with several guys projected as possible starters down the road.

cloudboy, if Quinn has the career Trent Green has had, I agree that Cleveland will be pleased, I know I would.

Status: offline 		I don't agree with that.  There were more than the usual number of "next year's such-and-such pick for this pick right now" deals.  That means, generally speaking, GM's were devaluing picks in next year's draft--unless they weren't aware of what they were doing, and I doubt that.

I think maybe the Browns just wanted to get it all done in one year ... possibly a good plan.
 
I was just looking at this website where they were talking about the Cowboy's draft strategy. They didn't want to take Quinn, because they didn't want to undercut Tony Romo. At the same time, if Romo doesn't work out, they are in a position to get one of the QB's next year. Next year's draft may be thin, but to be honest, I would rather have Brian Brohm or Chad Henne, than either Quinn or Russell. You also have to consider John David Booty. What if he has another good year, without Jarrett and Smith.
 
Another consideration is Darren McFadden. That guy looks like an Adrian Peterson, that isn't hurt all the time.

Status: offline 		No doubt the Cowboys handled the whole Quinn transaction very cleverly.  They may have crapped in the bed a little bit on Day 2 of this thing, but overall they made wise decisions.

Status: offline 		I think more people should consider that JaMarcus Russell was throwing at two recievers that were first round draft choices this season, and one that will likely be selected even higher next season ... and wasn't all that spectacular at times. He may be superman, but it wasn't like he was Mr. Perfect, throwing to stiffs. Chad Henne had back-to-back strong games when Manningham was hurt, and Brian Brohm has never thrown to a receiver that could make LSU's roster.

Status: offline 		Brady Quinn created the human interest story that ESPN  loves.A good looking  Quarterback who  seem like everytime they went to commercial break that poor guy had a camera on him. 
Monday our local sports station had  gone through how Cleveland went about the trade of draft choices to get him.Also covered how other teams were considering making deals, but Cleveland made the best with the Cowboys.  Still think , the term "franchise " player is a little far reaching. Baltimore ended up with a Heisman Trophy quarterback in the 170+ draft postion. Even with a great college year , the critics complain hes too short  because he is barely 6 feet tall.  Of course Baltimore drafted a quaterback named Anderson I think last year, Stuck him on the practice team and Cleveland picked him up for their team. So I guess now we will all be waiting to see which of the draft choices will be playing this year and which veterans will be on the open market.
