I'm really getting off on this bold stuff.

Well, hey, it's a football thread.

I mean, it's a football thread. We can all type just like Michael Irvin talks!

The speculation is that one of the strongest contenders is Cleveland, trading Brady Quinn for Jay Cutler.  I know that other teams are in desperate need of a qb, but how many have a good qb to trade for him?  The Broncos will have to get at least a QB for that trade, they have Simms, but how long has it been since he played?

I thought he retired to become a commentator.  Good grief he's gotta be older than George Blanda!

Just guessing here, but I think Katy was referring to Chris, not Phil Simms.....

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/16/2009 10:52:35 PM)

Oh, yes, Chris Simms, they got him at the beginning of this month.

Congratulations Dan Rooney on your nomination as US Ambassador to Ireland.  I was interested in knowing what affect it might have on the Steelers operation, but in Mike Wereschagin's article for the Tribune-Review News Service, quoting Art Rooney II, "The team's operation won't change."  I think it's a great honor bestowed on a wonderful gentleman.  He'll bring the same class to the job as he has done making the Steelers the classiest organization in the NFL.

As for Denver and the Cutler situation...I think the two quarterbacks are very close; neither one is a game-changer.

According to PAT KIRWIN of NFL.COM, Cutler is worth way more than a paltry RD2 pick in the draft:

Cutler has numbers that seem to command a big price tag. Take a look at what he did in 2008 and consider that the Broncos' defense was ranked 29th overall and last in creating turnovers with just 13 takeaways. They were 30th in points allowed. Overall, they had 44 starts from rookies -- the second-highest total in the NFL behind a Kansas City Chiefs team that was in a full-blown youth movement. In contrast, the Pittsburgh Steelers had only one start by a rookie all season on their way to winning the Super Bowl.

Other interesting facts about Cutler:» He guided the second-ranked offense in the NFL.

» He was No. 1 in fewest percentage of sacks, with 11 in 627 pass plays. That equates to one sack every 57 pass attempts.

» He was No. 3 in the NFL in third-down efficiency, the "money" down. The average NFL team converted 39.5 percent of its third downs; Cutler converted 47.5 percent.

» He was No. 3 in the AFC in yards per pass play (7.3).

» He threw for more yards than Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Donovan McNabb, Philip Rivers, Tony Romo and Ben Roethlisberger, to name a few.

» He had just two 100-yard rushing days from a running back all season: Peyton Hillis (129 against the Jets) and Michael Pittman (109 against the Jacksonville Jaguars).

» He had eight games of 300-plus passing yards (five of those at 350 or more), connecting for 15 touchdowns in those contests.

» Sure, he threw 18 interceptions, which is unacceptable, but his ratio of picks to attempts was 1:34, which tells a slightly different story. Last season, Brees had an interception every 37 pass attempts. Favre's ratio was 1:23, and Roethlisberger's was 1:31. Cutler's career ratio is 1:33.

» Only Jacksonville's David Garrard threw more passes in the fourth quarter of games than Cutler, who completed 100 of 167 passes for 1,212 yards and 11 touchdowns with just four interceptions.

Cutler is not a finished product, but when you consider his age, production (54 touchdown passes in 37 games) and contract, he has serious trade value. If Cutler is traded, the prorated signing bonus stays behind with Denver. Only his salary, workout bonus and likely-to-be-earned bonuses go to the new team.

I can imagine a domino effect after the recent success of the Steelers in the post-season:

Franco Harris - appointed Ambassador to Italy
Santonio Holmes - named new Drug Czar
Joe Greene - appointed Ambassador to the Republic of Texas (under Chuck Norris, see other thread)
Lynn Swann - appointed Governor of Pennsylvania (He was robbed. Help, Pres. Obama!)
Carl Weathers - appointed Governor of Florida (only cast member of "Predator" not elected Governor somewhere)

blog link

taking a look at Cutler's

Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement (DYAR). They define it as "the value of the quarterback's performance above replacement level, adjusted for situation and opponent and then translated into yardage."

To put in simple terms, they say that a quarterback with a higher DYAR is "a quarterback with more value." According to DYAR, Cutler (1,382) ranked fifth among quarterbacks in the NFL (2008 season) -

BreesManning, PRiversWarnerCutler
of interest:  Cassel ranked 17th

cloudboy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/19/2009 9:13:24 AM)

I think he's the best young QB in the league. His rivals are probably Flacco (not sure of his upside yet) and Ryan (the real deal.)

The next two youngest guys aren't so young anymore, Roethelsberger and Rivers.

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/19/2009 7:30:47 PM)

I'm meh over Philip Rivers, I think the Chargers should've kept Brees.  As far as Roethlisberger, he's not a statistical/fantasy football stud, but I like him for getting the job done under pressure when it is necessary.

I'm still drinking the Jay Cutler love kool-aide, always have, I don't care if he's a crybaby drama queen. [:)]
I wonder where he will end up because I can't see a reconciliation happening in Denver.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/19/2009 8:16:11 PM)

Well, it depends on how you define "young."  I was about to scream that the best two young quarterbacks in the league are Roethlisberger and Rivers, and then I saw that you acknowledged them, but said they're not young.

In any case, I really don't think Flacco is in the same class as any of these guys.

I'm not sure where Flacco's ceiling is.

Its difficult to evaluate a QB fairly, b/c comparisons don't account for WRs, defenses, running games, and line protection.

Not to take anything away from Peyton Manning, but he's in a system set up for him to succeed with lots of talent at WR, TE, and OL (although it was somewhat depleted this year.)

A team's defense also assists a QB, witness Roethelsberger and Flacco.

One thing I'll say about Cutler, which is that for some reason he just looks like a big baby. (facially) Great arm though.

slvemike4u -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/19/2009 9:36:01 PM)

I'll tell you what, there isn't a Jet fan around who wouldn't love him in green. The idea of entering camp with the three we have on the roster at present appeals to no one

cloudboy -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/20/2009 10:36:03 AM)

What do you think of Rex Ryan?

slvemike4u -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/20/2009 11:00:55 AM)

Who knows its still the Jets you know what I mean. This job has been a graveyard for a lot of guys with big aspirations.
What sort of deal did Joe Willie strike with the Devil in '69?And when does it expire?

KatyLied -> RE: NFL Sob (or Brag) Thread (3/21/2009 5:50:47 AM)

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens with the Jets this seasonI also felt the same way with the Broncos (and their drama is sure to please).  And I will also be following Joe Flacco to see how he improves over the next 2 seasons, I like his composure under pressure.
