The roster doesn't "suck" as badly as you think, as the OL is young, the DTs are elite, the LBs are elite, and the FS is all pro and in his prime. As many pundits correctly point out --- in the salary cap era -- the margin between winning and losing is small. The key to success is roster management, and BAL has not grossly mismanaged its roster. Ogden will probably retire, Ray Lewis' contract is up next year --- that will create cap space and new opp'ts. (As a small example.) Although you may like T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Wes Welker over Mason, Mason's gotten it done with QB's posting some pretty sad QB ratings, while those other receivers have an All Pro getting them the ball. (Food for thought.) I don't know if either of those guys would have posted Mason's numbers in BALTO, where secondaries would not have to contend with either Randy Moss or Chad Johnson on the other side of the ball. Although everyone may castigate Billick for not developing a QB, no QB has ever left Billick and lit it up elsewhere until Derek Anderson went to CLE. Curiously, though, CLE didn't even view him as the starter going into this season. Anyway, its done now. I would not have fired Billick. Now I'm worried about the team turning into the WAS Redskins, although in that respect I'm probably just being paranoid. DEN didn't haul off and fire Shanahan and CHI did not haul off and fire Lovie Smith. As for the QBs, they are in such short supply that the league is filled with have's and have nots. Haves: NE, SEA, PITT, CLE, CIN, IND, NYG, PHI, GB, AND NO. The sorta-haves: JAX, TENN, DEN, WAS, CAR, OAK, AZ, TB. Have nots: BAL, KC, DET, CHI, ATL, MIA, NYJ, MINN, SF. TEAMS who fell off the map because the #1 QB went down: STL, ATL, & CAR.
