A comment on another thread has me asking this question. The comment was that a warm up is needless work on the part of the top because the bottom will end up enduring all that is given anyway. So in thinking about it, I can see where the end result might indeed be the same, although I personally believe that would be primarily in the physical sense and may leave the mental or emotional fulfillment aspects lacking.

I have seen Dominant/Tops who have a style that appears to be very thought out and planned. They have the end destination in mind and follow an intricate roadmap to get there. A mix of sensations, touch and interactions that indicates that the two of them are on a the journey together. On the other hand,  I have seen Dominant/Tops that seem to have a more "Blitz attack/throw everything I can at them" approach. Submissive on the cross (or whatever) and Dominant thrashing away at them....but while they may be on their way to the same destination...they seem to be taking seperate vehicles to get there. While both methods may indeed have them all arriving at "Point B", the course is really very different.

Do you take either of these types of approaches....or a mix of both? What is more fulfilling for YOU and why? Submissives, your thoughts too please?

I do so much better when there is a warm up that leaves me wanting more instead of going into overload from the git go.

Hmm, interesting question.

For myself, I perfer the 'blitz, go all out' approach with a time out for the softer aspects in between. Sort of like....getting a belt across your ass for ten minutes, then some soft sensory play, followed by a fast hard flogging, etc etc.

This is mostly though because I really DO NOT like pain at all, so the time in between gives me a chance to calm my mind, and settle my emotions.

I guess I see the difference in the two approaches in that one approach has those softer "connection" moments that you are talking about...a roller coaster ride of highs and lows....and the other is just the "balls to the walls" approach that is more along the lines of "begin whipping(or whatever), stop when drooling and incoherent". Both may result in "drooling and incoherent"....just the path one takes to get there is different.

Depends on where the energy is and where we want the scene to go. 

I rarely have/use just one approach, in bottoming or topping.

I prefere to go with the moment, not plan, though that is a plan in itself... :)
Sometimes it's hard, sometimes it slows, it keeps the sub on her toes...
I want instant obedience, no matter when, no matter where, I feel if I am predictable, then I will never know if the obedience is a learnt response, or second nature... (ie; going through the motions or an actual state of being)
In a way this reflect on myself too, in life I want to BE, and not just go through the motions...

It depends on the mood and the moment, and what is needed by each of us.  Sometimes the blitz is awesome, and satisfies the beast within, who has an immediate and intense craving.  While at other times a slow building rhythm is what is needed, like a gentle dance, and caress, letting the flow of the moment determine the end result.  It is through gentle tears, while at other times, the primal scream is the word of the day! *grin  It really is varied, and never the same.  If it became predictable in that way, i think it would get boring and tiresome.

I find that a submissive can generally take more if warmed up some. However, as in all things BDSM, I am sure there are those submissives who prefer no warm-up at all.

LOL well I am not sure about drooling on my part...the incoherent yes. I usually go from screaming in agony, to whimpers of pain mixed with the tears, to screaming again lol.

Exactly how I feel. I've seen it though....there are couples that I have been watching play at parties...some of them for years....and it's always the same. The "s" gets on that cross and it's all bang, bang, bang from there...every single time. It seems to work for them...but oh my....I would get sooooo bored.

To me, there are reasons to have different kinds of scenes. 0 to 60 in 2 sec can be fun and necessary if you're going for really primal reactions. A warm-up might be necessary if you're looking to do certain things to the flesh. It will all depend.

So, I guess I'm one of those who has a destination in mind, usually, and at least a semi-plan on how to get there.

I like a mixture and to be surprised in how I am going to get treated although if it is going to be a particularly tough scene I prefer the warm up approach. But mark me as a variety is the spice of life girl.

Ok - I stopped laughing at "drooling and incoherent" now......

First off, seize the authority; so a quick blitz attack is in order - but not excessively. After that, have a plan, (but only a sketchy one 'cause you need some flexibility in there), for other stuff to do, 'cause just beating someone or just having them helpless isnt my idea of fun. Its the mind that provides more fun IMO, not the arse!
