I live in Turkey and there are Starbucks everywhere (they are literally building one as we speak on my corner).  I dont go very often, but alot of the people I work with think of it as a status thing.  They go there to be seen.

Not my idea of the best way to spend money but it works for them.

I agree people go to be seen but not necessarily a status symbol (well, not in Britain anyway). It's a product that people are buying into i.e. the whole concept of sitting in a coffee shop reading a book and drinking coffee. It is a way of saying "look at me, I'm intelligent, I read books............in fact, I'm that intelligent I pay £3.50 for the privilege of reading a book that costs me nothing in my own home".

MizSuz -> RE: Coffee... (10/7/2006 5:14:58 AM)

I'm not a fan of starburneds.  If I must go there I usually ask for an Americanos (shots of their espresso with hot water to make a full cup).  I find it's rich and doesn't taste bitter or burned.  It's also only a couple of bucks.

I'm with the DD crowd.  Their's is much more pallatable to me.  Extra large costs 2.26.  Frankly, when I bought my motorcycle I decided to stop buying morning coffee at shops.  That money now makes my bike payment and I have much more fun on my bike.

In the winter I drink a lot of tea, usually Earl Grey.  Stash used to make a double bergamot earl grey that I was obsessed with for a while.  I haven't been able to find it in some time, though.  Twinings makes a Lady Grey that's quite nice and rather subtle, too.

I haven't a clue why someone would spend 4 bucks on a cup of coffee, particularly burned coffee.

Why someone pays through the nose for coffee when you can buy a better cup of coffee in a local bar for under a third of the price is something I've never worked out. The consumer society and its needs for branded goods I guess. Though I have to admit, the local Starbucks usually have prettier customers but I'm not aware of anyone having pulled in a Starbucks but maybe it is just me.

We don't, we buy the Starbucks beans and grind them at home....much more economical. I like the espresso roast myself.

Or in the camper, we bought a grinder to take with us on trips......now that is spoiled.

But the smell of fresh ground coffee beans did seem to draw the hungover bikers straight to our campsite.

mistoferin -> RE: Coffee... (10/7/2006 7:21:50 AM)

I'm not a big fan of Starbucks....or Tim Horton's or Dunkin Donuts either. I like a REALLY good cup of coffee. There is one little coffee shop here in town that uses a local roaster, so the coffee is very fresh. I will pay their $3.00 once in a great while as a treat when I'm out. For home...I am looking into buying a coffee roaster so I can buy top quality green coffee beans and fresh roast them every morning. Green coffee beans are a fraction of the cost. It really is a very simple process and fresh roasted coffee is worth the extra effort.

sissifytoserve -> RE: Coffee... (10/7/2006 7:33:50 AM)

Hmmmmm....

I go to Starbucks and only pay 1.82 for a large black coffee. I have never payed 4 bucks for one.
In fact...around where i live...Dunkin Donuts is more expensive and second rate in my view in the way of the kick it gives.

I personally think starbucks tastes better than Dunkin Donuts coffee....but then again..I drink coffee with no sugar or creme so...
it might taste different.

My favorites to grind at-home have always been Organic Hawaiian, Jamaician or Sumatran. Columbian is just...average.

LaTigresse -> RE: Coffee... (10/7/2006 7:35:59 AM)

I detest Starbucks. I have only had it one time, was staying in a hotel on business in a suburb of a big city.  Nothing around for miles but what the hotel had inside....a Starbucks. It was afterall, company money and I wanted coffee. I was soooooo disappointed! I am spoiled I guess. I am addicted to the superstrong coffee and chickory I discovered in NewOrleans......now, everything else is just brown water.

Yup, that's pretty much how I feel about most coffee that I buy out. It seems though, that most people must have never experienced a good strong cup of coffee. Recently, there was an article in the local newpaper that counted the votes as to who served the best cup of coffee in town. I know it will be hard to believe, but McDonald's was voted #1. Now that says something to me.

Not coffee Venti Double Chocolate Chip Frapaccino is the only way i spend my money.  It is expensive but it is or was a treat for myself.  I also like that their employees are expected to work volunteer hours and that our local store supports a non for profit charity i have volunteered for.   They provide pastries and coffee for our meetings and for other times.  They have been quite generous.

yes.. they seem to have a social conscience.

Well, appreciates definitely.  Nothing near connoisseur.  My parents were exposed to earl grey when we lived outside of London (I was perhaps 3 years old).  I was raised with it and it remains 'comfort food' for me.

Since my last post I was motivated to search the net for the double bergamot EG and am pleased to say I found it!  Have any experience with "Empress Grey"?  It sounds like Lady Grey - light bergamot, lemon and orange.

I like breakfast tea, green tea, various yogi teas (chai and the like), some herbals, etc.  I have yet to be impressed with a white tea, though.  Flavorless.  What's up with that???

What's your favorite?  Inquiring and adventurous tea minds want to know.

Arpig -> RE: Coffee... (10/7/2006 8:41:47 AM)

Never have, never will, can't stand the vile brew myself.

We brew our own coffee and tea. www.GEVALIA.com

It's better when I can make things just the way I like it.

Well, Mizsuz, I'm a working class lad and a creature of habit when it comes to tea, if it ain't broke no need to fix it. So, I don't really go in for Earl Grey as it's a bit posh round this neck of the woods but any tea is good tea so no criticism here.

Personally, I like Yorkshire Tea. The stuff is miracle cure. Get up in the morning, blindly stumble around for a bit, have a cup of Yorkshire Tea and game on. I'll send some across to the US for you.

Yeah, what is it with that burned taste of starbucks?
I've had 1 cup of starbucks in my life on the Jersey Turnpike when I was moving down here 2 years ago and it tasted like crap!
It tasted like it was BURNED!

Why do any of you spend 4 bucks for a cup of coffee?

Hello A/all,

I lived on coffee (2-3 quarts a day) when I was trying to get into the union.

When I got into the union I quit coffee cold turkey.  Weaning off that stuff was a month of pure hell.

I have had perhaps 10 cups of coffee in the last 19 months.  Most of it was from Charbucks or Java City.

Just me, could be wrong, but there you go.

Sinergy
