Before I get out the baseball bat and attempt an attitude adjustment on my computer I'll ask for help here.

My husband just did a major "repair" on our computer.  LOL yea I know..thats probably my problem but bear with me.....

He wiped the hard drive and reloaded everything.  Widows (XP) as well as every other program we have.  This isn't the first time he's done this so yes, I am well aware of the headaches of reinstalling and resetting everyfreakingthing.  ARGH!  But this time I have encountered a very interesting problem with this site......

You see.. .I'm obviously logged in as me...leaving a post....I MUST be logged in..right??  But.  When I go to the main page... I'm not really here.  I log in.  The  page asking me to "log in" remains.  Yet when I click on the link for the message boards... I'm here...back to the main page and "log in" LOL.  No link for messages (site email)  or chat just the "home, message board and games" links are showing as.. I'm not reallllllllllly here???????  I click on "support" and it tells me to .. You guessed it...LOG IN/Register.  I used a link in my outside email and landed in collarme chat.. as "guest".

I've checked internet explorer settings...and see nothing that would disallow signing in.....well I AM signed in but at the same time.. I'm not??  The only other problem I've encountered is in using msn messenger.  Says I'm behind a firewall but the firewall is disabled and yes I've rebooted the computer many many many times.

Any other suggestions before the computer flying lessons start??

It may be a timed-out cookie... in Internet Explorer, click Tools > Internet Options > Delete Cookies... (then you can click Delete Files to clean out the Explorer disk cache). Try it again and see if the problems remain.

If the issues persist, you may need to check Internet Explorer settings for accept/deny cookies from third party web sites (CM and message board are different domains) .

I agree that this is a cookie problem.

Odin help me if I ever have to reload. I avoid it like the plague, and in 98SE.

One thing to remember about XP is that there are different users, when you go to documents and settings you will see all the user names there, and if you didn't format, the old ones will still be there. You might not be able to access them, so what you might have to do is unplug the PC about three times during bootup and get on as administrator, in safe mode. Find the cookies for your old usename and move them into your current cookie folder. If there was any security setup on the last load, you might have to go through a process of "taking posession of these files", and then sharing them, or once in your posession you can simply move them to your current user directory in "documents and settings". Actually you do need to move them or copy them, because IE will look for them there.

There is a little secret about XP I discovered. Get a spare ten gig HD and load it on your machine, XP only, you don't need word or anything. Then unplug the drive and let it rest until you need it. When XP crashes hard, get out this lil ten gigger and use your main drive as a slave. Booting off the extra drive it might say "Windows has detected a problem with drive X, do you wish to rerpair it. Of course you do. I actually had where a format had been started and XP fixed it ! Perhaps even start the format and unplug it, then put in your lil rescue drive. It works.

Of course this was XP pro corporate edition, not all versions might be able to do it.

Pro corp is awesome, once I learn how to do all the modifications I did to 98SE I will be using it. The problem with me is I DL alot of music and sometimes get multiple copies, in 98SE I can play them all at once using mplayer7, I'll have to see if it will run in XP.

While there are doubts, it should work. Actually if you didn't know, you can run msconfig in 95, to get selective startup and whatever else. I believe there is one exe and one dll and you can run them from a floppy.

When I finally go with XP, I am loading this lil ten gig, then cloning it to the 80 gig or whatever. Then the ten gig will sit there mounted in the PC, but not connected. Of course all drivers and stuff will be there. That has got to be the most solid backup possible, an unconnected harddrive.

But then you can't clone it to your main drive or you'll lose all your files, but you can boot off it. It may even be able to repair whatever happened to your boot drive. I almost busted a nut when I saw this work, I plugged in my buddy's original drive and it worked. I was in awe. This thing was so screwed up it wouldn't get out of blackscreen, recovery console wouldn't work, I thought I was screwed.

There is seemingly a hyper administrator in safe mode, and you actually can password protect it, but I don't recommend it unless you write that password down. That way, all you have to do is force the thing into safe mode and you can do many things, like take posession of encrypted files etc. I saved thousands of dollars worth of this guy's porn that way. Sick shit too, copied a bunch of it myself :-)

Reloading a PC is not fixing it, it is giving up on fixing it. I can't stand defaults. They have sucked on every version of windows since 95. At least XP puts you in 800 by 64K on the display. At least it finds your network and the internet so you can DL drivers, but a reload is still a bad deal.

I believe this site uses cookies, but it may also use your IP, which would explain you being able to get in one way but not another.

Sometimes this shit is too much and I feel like booting from the MEPIS Linux CD, which does a hell of alot more than I expected. With it I got true color, sound, network and internet. It is absolutely invulnerable to anything, because the OS is on a CD and can't be changed. I'm going to shutup now because I have almost talked myself into using MEPIS and throwing windows out the window.

Funny, with 98SE I had to go theough all this crap to get it online throught the DSL MODEM, Linux found it right away and got on with no hassles whatsoever.

You know....the one thing you don't check.....lol

Seems hubby had a wee typo when he was putting everything back together that created all the errors I was getting.  And of course when msn messenger help site suggested checking the date/time settings on the computer I did the ole put the cursor over the time display saw the "right" date/time and said nope..thats not it.  Had I looked closer I would have realized that oops..it's not 2026!! No wonder so many sites security certificates couldn't be validated.  Hmm ya think???

As for the secondary hard drive...already have one but he uses it to move everything from the primary drive over to store it when he does his "repairs".  This poor computer is terribly old and needs frequent "attitude adjustments".  Seems to need more of those since we started using XP Pro Corporate.  Personally I hate it but then again I'm still having withdrawls from windows 93 LOL.  I will certainly show him Your response..who knows..maybe it will save a few brain cells the next time XP crashes on us.  This latest one was some nonsense from a windows update that suddenly deemed us to be using "pirated software"  HUH???  Don't think so.

I thank You both for the suggestions.  I truly appreciate it!

If you are using XP Corporate, it is more than likely pirated.  XP Corporate is a version sold to enterprise (obviously) so that they can do mass deployment without having a zillion CDs lying around.  The corporation simply buys the appropriate number of licenses.  There is only one key for it and it does not have to be activated.

Also, to get into Safe Mode, you do not unplug the computer.  You press F8 as it is starting up.  Which does not matter.  You do not need to go into Safe Mode to access other accounts.  Safe Mode is only for system maintenance.  To get to an old account, just make sure to be logged in as Administrator (your own account is fine as long as you have Administrative rights) and take ownership of the folder.  But yeah, you do not want to be transferring cookies amongst accounts anyways.  That will not work for obvious reasons.

I do not understand what is so awesome about Corporate edition.  It is exactly the same as XP Pro, the only difference being the licensing.  Oh well.  To each his own I guess.

Also, there is no "super administrator" in safe mode.  You have exactly the same rights logging into normal mode as an Administrator.  The only difference is that safe mode does not load anything memory resident, even drivers, so that you can diagnose and repair problems.  It is especially effective for getting rid of virii and spyware.

There are two ways to protect your data.  The first is to get a secondary drive and make it your data drive (I have both this and a file server).  The second is to get a RAID 1 array so that your main hard drive is mirrored.  It is inexpensive to do, and if one disk ever chokes on you you just replace it and your back up again in no time.  This is especially effective for mission critical data..  The nicest thing is that it is fully automatic.
