...Calling myself a Master simply means I aspire to be one, whatever the definition of that might be in my head.

Around here this same philosophy often becomes labeled as a wannabe, or as a fake.... a "non-real dominant", or "not a true dominant", so regards and welcome to the club.

I knew somebody who used to call herself Princess, she never liked the word Mistress.

I have seen a few Dommes refer to themselves as Masters....wouldn't the correct term be Mistress? I have always perceived the word Master as masculine and Mistress as feminine. I have never seen a male Dom refer to himself as a Mistress...why do some Dommes use the masculine form?

Because they dislike the connotation of "mistress" as the other woman or unmarried female lover of a man.

Because "master" can be gender neutral apparently -- note I earned a "Master's" of History not a "Mistress" of history.

MasterFireMaam has a superb description. Mine is a little different. I like the title "master" because it has the verb "to master" and so can imply competence or excellence. It's also the only title conventionally used in BDSM that I have actually earned by some externally verifiable means; I have a Master of Arts degree. While I wear too much mascara to qualify as soft butch these days, I am still not a very feminine woman, and "Mistress" seems to indicate a level of femininity that doesn't suit me.

By the way, I also don't like "domme" any more than I like "authoress," "lady doctor," or other titles denoting achievement or power possessed by women as special. Hurrah for gender neutrality!

Maybe I should really mess with heads, and do the third person speak. Whaddayathink...Should I just title myself  "This pervert"?[:D]

Uhm... wouldn't that be capped?  Although i like it in bold 24 point Red..   This Pervert..   lol.

Mavis -> RE: Can a Domme be a Master? (8/30/2006 11:19:25 PM)

In this same vein, i once asked several of my Domme friends how They felt about gender neutrality in titles.  All or Most agreed it would be much simplier.  So then i asked about how They would feel about S/someone addressing Them as "Sir" as is done in many military circles..  and in star fleet academy.

Wow, i would have figured the gender neutrality of that would have some appeal.  i nearly got beat to death with Prada bags, One hurled Her lipstick so fast i got nailed in the eye...  i guess my Domme friends were too tied to the girlie aspects to have real interest in the authority recognition part.  The clear pref in that circle of friends was "Maam".

(Edited to follow the rule i broke!)

For one, because there's a difference between "male/female" and "masculine/feminine".  Most of the female folk who use the term "master" to describe themselves are masculine females (butch), if not actually male-identified (trans).

But some who aren't butch or trans prefer the masculine form, and many prefer "sir" over "ma'am"...

It's just whatever works best for them.

Let's just take all these terms Dom, Domme, Master, Mistress, etc and just call us all PICs. Person In Controll. After all, whatever the person in controll calls his or  herself, it all adds up to being the same thing.

Great, Fangsnfeet. The next time a fellow asks me to send some naked pics, I'll strip a couple of dominant friends, put them in a box, and mail them to him.

You know FnF, i think that's a wonderful idea.   i could see using it easily.. but i can also see the "WIITWD"  problem with it too. More Acronyms?  lol.

LadyHugs -> RE: Can a Domme be a Master? (9/1/2006 7:37:07 PM)

Dear mistoferin, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Having my beginnings with the Gay Leathermen overseas, I was very familiar with the Master/slave dynamic.  Further, in the early days of my experiences, there were no such titles as Dom, Domme, submissive, TOP and or bottoms.  Dominant, submissive described a state of behavior--not a title.  The TOP/bottom was added after that to describe who was taking the turns with the whip and not really a dynamic of what was Dominant/submissive.

Master was more of a state of behavior than a title, until that title was earned.  I do identify as a Master, as I've worked hard to earn such qualities.  That said, I identify with other titles but, I am not 'tied up' in labels but, it helps describe my mental, my emotional, my spiritual and physical state of being and or self.  Just like I use Lady, more than a title but, a state of behavior.  Although I am a heterosexual and by no means, identify as a Butch Lesbian--I am a person who has qualities that may invite a slave to become part of my world and my mastery.  Being a Master, regardless of venue--requires constant maintaining, it is always a progressive motion in growth.

In military and semi-military and or para-military organizations, the experiences I have had has kept with the military vein of being masculine, regardless of gender.  It is not wise to waste time in being political or gender correct; what is wise is using the troops to the best of their ability and get them safely back to barracks/home.  With the Gay Leather culture I circulated around, the military was a familiar way of organization and brotherhood.  When I came through, women were just entering previously masculine fields.  However, history has proved many times before, women have altered their appearances and worn male togs as to fight along side men and at times better.  Police and Fire Departments, have also adopted the practice of keeping the masculine side, as to keep the gender issue from being a distraction.

In addition, those who petition my collar are the ones who entitle me.  Most of all, respect is all I ask for.  I return it in kind.  Most of all, is a matter of personal choice and a means to identify the sort of dominant one is.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

Though I am not much for labels, that one is a good one!!
