I have seen a few Dommes refer to themselves as Masters....wouldn't the correct term be Mistress? I have always perceived the word Master as masculine and Mistress as feminine. I have never seen a male Dom refer to himself as a Mistress...why do some Dommes use the masculine form?

They feel the energy/connotation with the word suits their personality and perspective better than the traditional terms. Labels, especially in the scene, are not gender exclusive. It's more common for females to take up stereotypically male labels, but there are males who do the same. It's also a lot more common and accepted in the homo and leather scene versus the hetero scene. In some ways the hetero scene is REALLY lame and conformist compared to the "overall scene."

I have seen crossdressers or transvestites/transexuals assign them selves to the role of Mistress. Some just define their identity with the gender they feel more comfortable with.

I know and respect several dominant women who prefer the word "Master." Most of them don't like the word "Mistress" because of the vanilla connotation, i.e. a Mistress is the woman a married man commits adultery with. There are other distinctions as well. The word "Mistress" sometimes seems to indicate a degree of frivolity which the word "Master" never does. Also, the word "Master" is sometimes used as a verb. When one, male or female, thoroughly learns a new skill, one is said to "master it," never "mistress it." And I know of no college which grants a "Mistress'" degree. I do know a couple of dominant males who go by "Mistress." They're CDs.

Master is not a gender specific title... so yes, a woman can refer to herself as a master. I consider myself to be a master but I do not introduce myself as master.

Maybe because they want to and if it makes them happy then the answer is yes. If a man wants to be called Mistress go for it, they are nothing but labels. ~Lashra

Describing why I prefer Master over Mistress is like trying to describe the difference between a grapefruit and an orange. Both are citris. Both have peals. Both come in secions, with and without seeds. Both are perfectly delicious fruits. Yet, there are small and subtle differences, most importantly flavor, that makes them hugely different over all. For me, there's a subtle, but important, difference I feel between Master and Mistress. For me, Mistress was a title I struggled to make fit by doing what I thought a Fem Dom "should" do. Master is one that came naturally and I do what I feel is natural to me. And, while I do celebrate my male energy, it has little to do with gender identification OR a strap on (see the point about not doing what I've been told Fem Doms "should" do). It has everything to do with a spiritual path and finding who I truly am. For those that have been here a while, you all might remember that I used to post as MistressFireBDSM. This UNBERCUNTGODDESOFTHEUNIVERSE thinks that pervert should do whatever feels right for that pervert. ok I'll be serious now...people will see you as they see you and no matter what title you give yourself or even if you have a title that was earned or given by an educational institution or group, it won't change someone's perceptions of you. In fact, it may make you work harder to prove you are worthy of such. More important is to act in a manner that is respectable and how you wish to be perceived.

It's nice to know that someone noticed it, if only to conclude that I'm a possible loon. Proclamations are not merely limited to a single label of Master (or Mastur)... Perfecting the sphere and re-inventing the wheel seems to be an on-going never ending process. What is or may be absolutely perfect today does not necessarily have basis or staying power to enable it to apply to tomorrow. One could also say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
