Can anyone tell me the difference between a paddle with holes as opposed to one without? Does one sting more than the other? Just curious

Hi scarletrose.

All other things equal, the paddle with the holes will sting more than the solid one. Especially on bare flesh.

This is just me, but the paddle with holes always leaves a mark, without leaves one about 75% of the time.

The holes in the paddle cut down on wind resistance. If I hadn't done so poorly in Physics, I could probably be more specific in this explanation.

Well. . .the holes would make less surface area on the paddle and less surface area would mean less surface area for the paddle to have to "fight" against the air as it travels I think. . .[;)]

I like the ones with holes in it because it means less mass as well. I'm just a small, weak, helpless, defenseless girl afterall [:-]

You should get a nice laquered dressage whip then. There's almost no wind resistance with one of those.

It's an old misconception that holes cut down in wind resistance-air resistance is very marginal in terms of impact.

What actually happens is that the edges of the holes bite into the skin, and stretch it, as they impact. This also results in more marking and pain.

A paddle with grooves in it has the same effect,and they aren't holes,just differences in surface hieghts.

I always thought it was to allow the layer of air between the paddle and flesh (however insignficant) to escape allowing for more of an impact. The marking was just a bonus.

Exactly!

At a party I had the opportunity to use a small wooden paddle with a heart shape cut out. It left a very nice heart shaped mark that lasted quite a while. I think the impact bruises results from the blood rushing where the flesh wasn't traumatized.

I'm thinking of having one made for each 'holiday'.

The type of paddle you are refer to ( I think) was designed in the 1930 by a school teacher named 'Spenser' and to this day is sold as a 'Spenser paddle'. Mr Spensers notion was that the holes allowedthe surface effect air cushion to bleed off, and resulted in a more vicsious impact.

Both M. Jules and Our Stef are better educated to explain the idea, as my infomation is stictly folkways based...

But the damn thing does hurt waaay more<g>....

Same Material and same shape - one with holes, one without -

A lot of other variables are involved relative to hole quantity and size, finish on the paddle and actual materials - buit, allthings being equal, the one with holes will generally leave a greater impact/feeling when applied with an equal force - it will have a greater speed.

Windage is less with holes, so there is less resistance to motion.

'With holes' has a greater impact surface area (the edges of the holes will act as additional space for the flesh to be "drawn up into" as it impacts and conforms the skin to itself) - they also present 'edges' (usually they are rounded edges to avoid a splitting of the skin) for the skin to be impacted on, therefore presenting additional tensile effect.

Besides - the one with holes leaves deliciously intricate patterns that can really be 'pretty'
