I have never used AOL even when they offered me a year for free, I preferred my University ISP, and now I have another. I am thinking of bundling and getting high speed cable... I do not trust AOL, and I have heard horror stories about them. Your experience does not surprise me. I get high speed DSL on three different computers for 14.95 a month... who needs AOL?

Andrea, I'd be curious to know what you ended up getting it for. I use AOL as my connection to the internet...so I can't go the free route...but I'd like to pay the lowest amount if I could just find out what that is.

9.95... it will work for now.. I hope to have DSL later..but this is fine for now.. since I don't really do a lot of work on my computer and am not in school right now.

I did have N et scape , but it was so slooowwww....this at least is a bit faster and now for the same price.

I went wireless because there are three computers in my apartment, one for my mom, one for my son, and mine.. it was economical to go dsl and wireless in my case, but that is not everyone's reality I know.

I haven't been charged for my AOL service for years, but that's another story.  I haven't had any trouble with AOL at all.   I connect with DSL thru a national phone company, (no free advertising for them since I'm still negotiating a lower flat rate long distance plan).  The original rate was 19.95 per month during a promotion... when my contract was up .. I told them to cancel...they lowered the rate to 9.95 per month.    Most times if you call and have not signed up for a long term contract, you can get a better rate if you threaten to cancel.

With the free aol service are you still able to access the chat boards?

Owned

Yes, nothing changes except the phone support. I use aol mainly for a message board and email. I haven't had any problems except for some crap they run in the background even when not logged into aol. The worst one is a process called aolsoftware.exe and it uses almost 100% of my CPU and thus freezes me up when it runs so I have to keep closing the process. I tried deleting the file but it keeps coming back. Any one know how to get rid of it for good?

Something greatly reviled, to be shunned, the term originally meant excommunication from the church.
I hate AOL, it cludges up your system, rewrites essential Windows files and thus many programs will not run if you have AOL installed, and it is a royal bitch to remove as a result.

Ive heard this said many times before.  I have a few file issues and wouldnt be surprised if its because of the aol.  I guess Im so used to it that I avoid the change.  I have yahoo and IE but they dont seem as user friendly.
