I received an email from AOL detailing changes. I called tonight because a friend of mine called to cancel because of the $25.90 fee being too expensive. He was immediately told they could offer him the same unlimited plan for $9.95. I called because it really irritated me that just a phone call could result in such a price difference when I have faithfully been paying the top dollar for years. I was told that the email that had been sent to me explained the new $9.95 rate and that it instructed me to call. They dropped my plan to $9.95 immediately. Great right? Well I went back and took a look at that email. Nowhere in it does it say anything about their new rate being reduced to $9.95....nowhere does it say anything about calling to make changes. All it does say is that if I choose ANOTHER internet provider I can get AOL free. So I went searching for AOL price plans. I came up empty. Seems you can not find anything that details their specific pricing plans. Does anyone out there have this figured out?

The way I understood it is they are offering free AOL to anyone with a high speed connection. I received the email last week. I simply called and the automated system asked a couple of questions then told me I would be receiving my aol for free now, after the current billing cycle ends. I had been paying 14.95 per mo. I cant recall the exact questions, but they have you confirm the account then, if I recall correctly, they ask you how you connect to the internet. It took about 30 seconds.

We just switched 3 separate accounts to the free service. The only thing you are giving up is phone support. You just need to be able to connect to the internet through any other service besides AOL. They were losing so many customers to cable and DSL that they were losing advertising dollars, that is why they are doing this. Here's the phone number: 1-888-265-8003, select cancellation option

You are NOT giving up phone support. You are giving up free live on-line support. It's not a maystery of you READ the original e-mail you got at ALL of your screen names, and read what it say when you go to switch. It's spelled out.

Something greatly reviled, to be shunned, the term originally meant excommunication from the church. I hate AOL, it cludges up your system, rewrites essential Windows files and thus many programs will not run if you have AOL installed, and it is a royal bitch to remove as a result.

amen to that! AOL is just about the worst thing to have - and just try cancelling a subscription, there's no way to do it! I ended up writing to their registered address and then had six months of debt collectors chasing me for cancelled subs, even after AOL had confirmed in writing that my membership was terminated! E

The last time I paid for my aol it was $4.95 because I had a high speed connection, but as of my next billing date it will be free. They had sent out letters to customers making the announcement that the service would be free to anyone with a high speed connection, but what they left out was that it wouldn't be automatic and you had to go to Keyword free AOL and sign up for the new service. Anyway, it is my understanding that the only main changes to your account, for the moment, will be that you won't have access to free phone help. Personally, I've enjoyed using AOL services for several years and prefer it the others I've tried. Every other host seems to have way too many pop ups. I don't know if the pop up situation will change once the free service starts, if so, then AOL and I will have a problem. I do agree that AOL's program does seem to cause some problems with windows programs, but then, I sometimes have major issues figuring out many of the windows programs to begin with, so I don't know what I'm missing anyway. Also, true AOL is often a pain in the arse, for lots of reasons, but, for me its the lesser of evils of the bunch of them. Rosa

A similar thing happened with AOL over here, they were charging £14.99 for AOL Silver Broadband and for reasons only they would know, contacting them meant they offered you a drop in price to £9.99. When I asked them what the difference was, they said "With the £14.99 a month plan, you get a free wireless router worth £60". I pointed out that if I changed to the £9.99 plan, I'd be saving £5 a month for 12 months, which equals £60, so the "free" wireless router was actually going to be paid for in full anyway. If anyone else is on AOL, I'd urge you to contact Live Help or phone them and see what better offers they have than what you're currently paying - they keep it quiet unless you press them for information.

I have aol, I get rather large volumes of mail. It keeps the spam under control and the 30 meg e-mail accounts don't hurt much either. When AOL went free I tried to look up my account under keyword billing. Which no longer existed. I then wrote to them....asking how it was free when I was still being charged? Within a few days I got an e-mail telling me I was now on the free plan. My charges would be reimbursed. So, essentially if you do nothing you will still be billed. If you complain you will get it free.

I did this today.. Yippee!!!!.. I now pay hardly anything a month at all. I asked what I am losing he said..well..nothing but paying the extra 20 a month.. or something like that. I was going to call any way..but when I saw the posts on here in the wee hours.. I knew for sure what to ask for and was met with, "then that is what you will pay also". The service person was very nice, and things went great. I am sure a lot of people call in with attitudes and such..but..after working in retail for many years..I understand they are just doing their jobs. So.. Elliott.. if you read this..Thank you.. also, if you read this.. it means you are into the scene.. so..hmmm.. give me a hit on the otherside.. I loved that voice. I was talking to a UK AOL representative today and they say that in America, AOL doesn't provide your Broadband connection and that you have to pay for it via some other company, is that right? If so, how much do you pay for the Broadband connection ?

Andrea, I'd be curious to know what you ended up getting it for. I use AOL as my connection to the internet...so I can't go the free route...but I'd like to pay the lowest amount if I could just find out what that is.

One of my biggest mistakes in computing,installing A O HELL,I have never yet managed to get rid of all of it and it screwed things up on my pc,like a virus,it infiltrates everything that matters

erin, please do not use aol for your internet connnection they are the most expensive and fill your computer up with garbage. There are many, many other isp's out there with far superior service and lower charges. If you have any questions about how to connect to another one feel free to email me.

AOL had some sort of pack where you could go through them I think it was running 59.95 a month the last e-mail I got on it. Though that was a few year's ago and I already had broadband at the time. I was only paying 9.95 a month for aol....so there was no way AOL was going to be my only carrier. I use it for what its worth but I don't rely on it for important e-mail. Anymore you can get dsl for about 25 a month. We have cable though.
