So... I am contemplating starting a service to edit profiles so that they are correct in both grammar and spelling. The amount of misspelling and cases of bad grammar on this site is just... unbelievable. I understand that a lot of it is just simply mistakes made while typing, but a lot of it is also just laziness or not understanding the English language very well... So, any takers? [:)]

Not at all :) Making more fun of myself than anything. I actually use a spellcheck for my posts.. trouble is that it doesn't correct my "you" when I mean "your". But I do try. Most of my posts have "edited by" at the bottom.

It's the profiles I'm looking at here... there's no way I could edit all the posts. lol There is a difference between making a few mistakes due to typing so quickly or temporary dyslexia (which I do claim at times!) and sheer laziness. People who use so-called "txt" speak on their profiles... Well, I'll not go into it. It's one thing to use it when you have limited space on your cell phone, but on a profile, where it could be as long as you want... Ok, I told myself I wasn't going to rant, just offer to solve the problem. =^-^=

I dunno. I'd rather see what people's posts look like. Sloppy writing means sloppy thinking. When posts and profiles are loaded with errors, I know I can skip or skim. You're going to make me work harder! Rex

I like the idea.. One point worth thinking about is that countries other than the US and whose first language is english have their own rules for grammar and spelling. E.G. My spell check in Word is set to Australian English not US English, NZ English nor UK English. Regarding other errors, some folk have dyslexia (I can never see my typos in the posting box so either have to edit or write in word) and some I know also like me are using a borrowed computer with keyboards working well for those who type with hands set for typing where as some find that not all keys respond because we type using the two digit poke and prod method.. (Ok so I suffer from Floppy Paw Syndrome with oversized paws which mean I regularly key two letters similtaneously)....[;)]

Scott; Foresman and Company, pretty much any edition] which states: "Amount refers to a quantity of something (a singular noun) that cannot be counted. Number refers to countable items (a plural noun)." This advice of course echoes that of every grammar text in the English speaking world. The singular noun "amount" calls for the verb "is" and the plural noun "cases" calls for the verb "are." Compounding them as the subject of the sentence makes the sentence unresolvable by either verb. You didn't specifically offer to correct anyone's punctuation so I won't belabor your reliance on the ellipsis which any editor I've topped (or any copywriter for that matter) would probably consider over-reliance. We'll put that down to style. And let's face it: florid style would not be a shocking innovation in that body of literature which is Online Profiles. So yeah. Lots of room for improvement in the spelling and grammar (including punctutation) of profiles. But are you sure you want to volunteer--or hire yourself out--for the job of cleaning the place up? With all my incomplete sentences and sloppy citation practices I sure wouldn't want the job.

Ahhhh Noah, how would you deal with some one (No names no pack drill) who is just as likley to write his profile either in the Edwardian style or even revert back to using "Medieval Style" The former is very wordy and uses expressions or words having a different meaning than we use today and the latter of course is more like Chauser where spelling and grammar was not invented and words were spelt phoenetically according to the dialect of your local? [;)]

Although I would dearly love to be able to browse profiles that have complete sentences which actually make sense, as well as proper punctuation, unless you are also willing to go into My email box and fix the errors there, I would hestitate to rely on a nice profile being carried through by the user into an ongoing correspondence. How's that for a run on sentence? LOL Isn't is sort of like taking the test for someone, and then when they get to the final exam, and the assistant isn't available, they can't answer the questions? Well, since I don't look at a profile until after I get an email, it probably won't affect Me too much, so have at it! And I would appreciate it if no one would take apart My post to see how many grammatical errors it contains! Most of Mine are edited too for dyslexic fingers! I am too tired to worry about syntax.

I mention temporary (and permanent) dyslexia in my post. Then there is the whole "mixed word" syndrome where one is thinking one word while typing another. Sometimes known as a Freudian slip -wink- I know, I know, I'm goofy.

hmmmm not all of us have the same skills sets nor knowledge .... and definitly online english is not quite the universal world language as yet So i think it is a nice sugestion .... sometimes really good peopel dont realise how bad they are putting themselves across to the rest of the world I am one of those with a brain dysfunction that quite dramaticaly effects my abilities to type, spell and use written comunication... waves to Iron Bear .. I have dysgraphia rather than dyslexia and currently use an old battered laptop that does not have the normal range of word processing programs so no spell checkers .. and it has a damanged keyboard grins .... so do i get brownie points for trying laughs I am not trying for a sympathy vote ... just showing the range of issues that can effect some one .... but comunication is just that ... communicating ..... am I able, via this medium, to get you to understand who I am ..... what I seek warm smile which includes the fact that I love discussions ... I am just better at them in real than online ... RexLongBeach .... If you have a pet peeve about grammer and such then by all means limit who you interact with according to it ... but do not assume we are all slopy or such smiles ... we may just have different priorities and skills gets of her soap box .. places it neatly off to one corner for the next person* but warm smile ... if some one genuinely wants to help me .... I think that is lovely ...

I know I'm not perfect but I do like using basic grammar at least. -sighs- I think my biggest problem is seeing "ppl tlk lk dis". I know I'm not perfect, but at least I try. And I think you can tell the people who try versus the people who just... have issues with their keyboards or their -looks down at her own hands- stubby fingers.

General Reply: I really do tire of all the grammar snobs. Ive said it before and it bears repeating... Someone who happens to spell a little better than the average Joe, really has no high horse to ride in on. A real English scholar would shred us all to ribbons. Get over yourself and find another claim to fame.
