Hi popeye!

I've heard that rumor as well, but I'm afraid that I don't have any info on it beyond that.  If I run across more info, I'll try to remember to post it.

YIK,

I have earned so far, a pair of boots and belt. I am working next towards my vest or chaps. My family is the one that recognized it and bought them for me. I am hoping that some day soon I earn the title of Daddy and my next leather. Slow process! Congratulations on yours, it is overwhelming when you do earn them. It shows that someone is paying attention and cares enough. Sounds like you have lots of friends and support in your leather community.

Geoff, first, congratulations.  The gift of "earned" leather from your House or community is one of incredible value.  As Archer said, the best (and hardest) part is now wearing that leather with pride.

I did not "come up" in a Leather Family, but I can speak for my brother, who was very active in several leather groups here in Chicago until his untimely death almost two years ago.  Lee had several pieces of leather (belts, vests, arm and thigh bands) all adorned with custom designs, badges, and signed by members of his Leather Family and others connected with IML (of which he was an active supporter and enthusiastic participant in many of the events.)   Although we never specifically discussed these pieces, I know they were gifts from his Leather Family and friends.  I assume (with some confirmation from his partner) that these pieces were "earned" by his devotion and service to the leather, kink and gay communities of Chicago.

His first long-term partner was an IML contestant several years ago, and he too had earned leathers.  My brother inherited those pieces when his first partner died.  I now own some of those pieces and of course pieces from my brother.  Others are with my brother's lover and partner of many years, who remains a dear friend.  These very special leathers are wonderful reminders of my little brother, taken from us far too soon and too quickly.

Be blessed,

E.

Geoff, to answer your question first, yes earning leathers is a tradition within our family,  And the reactions are as you describe when one receives them.  Congratulations on your earned leathers.  You have worked hard within the lifestyle community and they are well deserved.

Congratulations and well done Sir! I am very happy for you and glad to see the tradition live on and be appreciated by so many on this board.

I was originally brought into lifestyle by those in the Old Guard tradition and so was brought into the leather community. I was surprised and honored to receive my first my first piece of leather several years ago from those who had been kind enough to accept me into their fold and guide me during my early years. I was presented with wrist cuffs. (not bondage cuffs, simple wrist bands) I was told they were not quite sure what to give me as they were older gay men and I was an oddity to them.. a much younger girl.. so they figured perhaps a girl would get more use from those rather than riding boots. I found it all the more touching that they put this kind of thought into it and cherish them. I was overwhelmed and surprised, as I did not think that a girl would be honored with such wonderful recognition by men in the older gay male leather tradition.

I am so happy for you, I am sure you have done much for our community and I hope you continue to find the time, energy and heart to continue. *hugs* [:)]

I have since expanded my lifestyle to include leather tradition and new styles as well, but I value my time and ties to the leather community and those wonderful men who taught me so much. (And later many wonderful women too!)

Many smiles and hugs,
Amoretta
