I have a "retired" military ID. Proud to have served my country for over 20 years. However, I see these guys claiming to be veterans and demanding handouts and benefits that they aren't entitled to from the companies and persons that offer them.

Two examples.

When I was in Africa a missionary demanded access to base and recreational facilities because he was a Coast Guard veteran. Not only was he not entitled but proffered no proof.

The guy on the street corner with a "Help a Veteran" sign.

Now, at least, we have the ability to identify veterans. I would hope that companies picking up on this will require this or the DD Form 214 (Discharge Paper) when honoring vets.

I can see that if someone is requesting access to benefits or that sort of thing, then they should be able to prove it or at least have some system in place to verify who they are - just in case they lose their documents or ID card.

When it comes to panhandlers on the street carrying signs, I'm not inclined to believe whatever they say. I know of a guy who stands on the street corner carrying a sign saying that he's homeless, when I know for a fact that he's not homeless. Some of them might claim to be veterans, but who knows? The fact that there are a lot of homeless vets out there says something about the way this government treats its veterans, and that may even be a bigger outrage.

I've had my "veteran's ID card" for almost two decades now. You get one of those when you register with the Veterans Administration.

Now that all veterans can get an ID card (whether they want one or not) I can just see the reaction in some sectors; "Da gubmint be trackin us vets cause we knows how ta blow shit up. Burn yo ID card, boy!"

Merc I suggest you re-read. It only applies to those that want them not all. And govt tracking occurs anyway. Healthcare on the web. The loss of millions of personnel records going back to when we were in the military. drivers license, state ID card, arrest record, etc.

Im sorry Id be(I am) more pissed at the number of veteran suicides per day.
There is a concern in the UK that I am with called "soldiers off the streets" they are striving to get as many homeless vets off the streets and into housing, mental health care and employment as they can. Its a monumental task sadly.
WHile in the UK medical care is free for vets, the numbers are overwhelming due to cutbacks, since the 90s including mental health care.
Id rather a couple of moochers get help than cut off vet benefits for hundreds, or thousands.

Unfortunately it seems to be a first world problem.
Its not AS bad figure wise as the US considering the difference in the size of the force... but in canada we have a problem too

I have 2 episodes in my life, both at Christmas, both military, that cause me some significant issues at that time of the year.

Its hard enough to ask for help for too many, let alone be able to get it when you need it most.

This is one of the few things that makes me feel real shame, deep down inside, when I see it. I feel like this is a colossal, collective failure on us, as a people. I may get angry about other issues, even righteous sometimes. But this hurts my heart in ways that I can't explain.

I think it goes back to the days of Viet Nam when it was socially accepted to spit on and throw stuff at military personnel. I think that regardless of whether or not they have since changed her minds, they instilled the hatred against military personnel into their children.

I remember an interesting episode of Lou Grant which showed the differences between how vets were treated after WW2 vs. how they were treated after Vietnam.

One guy I used to work with told me that when he returned from Vietnam, he saw some protesters at the airport, which made him want to go back and do another tour. There was a very strong anti-military sentiment back in those days, although it started to subside by the late 1970s. Some protesters have since expressed regret over some of the things they said and did back then. Even Jane Fonda apologized.

well,.. one thing for me is why join the military and then decide to desert? there are apparently about 20,000 soldiers that have deserted since 2006.. some of them want refuge in Canada and Canada is saying no (rightly so, imo).. this is not like back decades ago when men were forced into the military, today its their choice to join up or not.. if you aren't sure you want to be a soldier with all that goes with that then ffs don't sign up!..

During desert storm we had guys trying get out because they signed for the education benefits not to fight.
People join thinking they can get the benefits without doing the rest of it.
