Me again. My PBS station is filling time by re-airing last year's Capitol Fourth concert. A few thoughts: (a) I can never decide which patriotic tune is my favorite. Suggestions, anyone? I have the same trouble with Christmas carols. (b) Kermit the Frog just sang "Some day we'll find it, the rainbow connection." My reaction: This year, thanks to Anthony Kennedy, we actually did. (c) When the old Soviet Union wanted to celebrate and/or impress, the Politburo brought out the rockets and missiles and troops. We bring out our artists and our instruments. We fill our streets with Cub Scouts, volunteer firefighters, PTA members, beauty pageant contestants, and so forth. I can't resist thinking that helps explain why we're still standing and the USSR isn't.
