Happy Fourth to You All!

A friend posted this E.M. Forster quote, and I quite liked it:

"America is rather like life. You can usually find in it what you look for.
It will probably be interesting, and it is sure to be large."

dcnovice -> RE: Have A HAPPY 4th of July:) (7/4/2015 4:10:35 PM)

Me again.

My PBS station is filling time by re-airing last year's Capitol Fourth concert. A few thoughts:

(a) I can never decide which patriotic tune is my favorite. Suggestions, anyone? I have the same trouble with Christmas carols.

(b) Kermit the Frog just sang "Some day we'll find it, the rainbow connection." My reaction: This year, thanks to Anthony Kennedy, we actually did. [:)]

(c) When the old Soviet Union wanted to celebrate and/or impress, the Politburo brought out the rockets and missiles and troops. We bring out our artists and our instruments. We fill our streets with Cub Scouts, volunteer firefighters, PTA members, beauty pageant contestants, and so forth. I can't resist thinking that helps explain why we're still standing and the USSR isn't.

Thanks, Lucy. I hope the day finds you and yours well, too (even though it's meaning isn't the same up North).

(This is also serving as a response to the Cruz/Simpsons thread)

According to candidate Obama you left out a few.

Yes, happy 4th of July to all.

A big occasion for Americans and rightly so.

I can never, ever think of 4th July without remembering that scene in The Great Escape, after which Ives, the small Scots guy, goes loopy and gets shot trying to climb the camp fence - despite Steve McQueen trying to save him by throwing himself at the German guard.

Oh well. Better times now. Americans are no longer surrounded by machine-gun turrets and barbed wire fences as they celebrate July 4th, and I can see *no good reason at all* why they should be.

Not the picture painted by many an anti-gun nut, though. [:D]

Yet it still jars me to encounter fences and security checkpoints on the way to watch the fireworks on the National Mall.

N.B. I understand that the security measures are earnest efforts to keep us safe. I just think they take a toll on one's sense of Independence Day freedom.

PeonForHer -> RE: Have A HAPPY 4th of July:) (7/5/2015 3:34:55 PM)

jeez, DC, I was being jocular. I had no idea it was really like that.
