A survivor of the massacre in Tunisia has revealed local hotel staff members formed a human shield on the beach in a heroic bid to protect tourists from the rampaging gunman. John Yeoman, 46, said Muslim staff members from the Bellevue Hotel told the gunman he would have to kill them first as they formed a human barricade between the shooter and Western tourists... He told MailOnline staff formed a shield and started yelling at the gunman: 'You must kill us first.' The gunman, who openly declared he was targeting Western tourists during the killing spree, was also told: 'You will have to get past us, but we're Muslim.' ~Source

Gunman Seifeddine Rezgui can be seen wandering away from a group of local men who have formed a human chain to protect tourists on a neighbouring beach

These were brave and good people.
We need more like them.

Hey look at that, a bunch of people resisting a lunatic with a gun. And not one of them had a firearm on their person. Sure it might have helped. Then again, the gunman could have turned on them too because of those guns!

I wonder how many conservatives whom own guns, would have just as much balls to pull a stunt like that when faced with a lunatic with a gun?

Be a good fellow and go jerk off somewhere else.

Joe with a comment like that you are giving them an opening for another gun thread... because there is no doubt they will say if the tourists had guns there would not have been 30 deaths... And... they would be right.

What a damn world.

Butch

Does the average sunbather in the USA, on his way to the beach for some sunbathing and swimming, take a gun with him?

I think this attacker knew what would be a soft target: people on holiday; tourists on a beach or in a church .... Hell. What's the point on going on holiday to a place where you think you might need to fight a deadly enemy? It kind of defeats the purpose of a holiday ....

Ah well. Shutting the barn door after the horse has bolted, of course ... but the Tunisian authorities are now talking of flooding the resorts with soldiers. I'd be surprised, though, if their tourist industry recovers any time soon.

Although I disagreed with their cause, I think your question might be well answered by simply looking back to the Cliven Bundy incident in Nevada.

there are actually plenty of incidents, but he actually seems either pathologically incapable of learning or of being fair & equitable in his judgments.

and I am still wishing he'd learn (I know, ironic given what I just said) the difference between "who" and "whom."

And just think, penguin...there could have been 2 - 3 deaths, including the gunman, instead of 30. But hey...only the criminal had a gun (remember what we've said about criminals not obeying gun laws, no matter how stringent?)...so there's 30 dead.

Could we get slightly more real, here? This was a beach resort. The people involved were from countries where they don't carry guns. Even if they could carry guns in their home nations, they probably wouldn't have been allowed to bring them to a foreign country when going on holiday, should they even think of doing that, anyway. Lastly, how the feck do you carry around a gun when you're only wearing a bikini or swimming trunks?

Yes, if some people had been tooled up, they could have shot the gunman. But, clearly, on this beach that was *exceedingly* unlikely ... which was probably a factor when the gunman was figuring out his venue beforehand.

Could everybody stop trying to apply 'American gun culture' arguments, here? They don't fit ... they're unrealistic and utterly alien to everybody in the western world other than Americans - and even many of them. Nobody is *ever* going to go on holiday from Britain, Belgium, Germany (the main nationals involved here) or any other European country and lie on a beach with a frigging gun stuffed down his trunks or her bikini-bottom.

I wondered about that myself, and apparently there are different types of concealment holster underwear available.

Four Ways to Carry a Gun in Your Underwear

Second Generation Deep Concealed Crotch Carry Handgun Holster

quote:

Medium Size Second Generation Holster made from soft light padded yet very tough Denim with extra heavy duty double layer elastic nylon and velcro belt
Duck Back Water Resistant Layer keeps body moisture from reaching your gun.
Heavy Duty DOUBLE Elastic belt with Industrial Strength Velcro........2 Pockets for gun and spare magazine
Lightweight and comfortable - less than 4 ozs
Complete freedom of movement.........Ambidextrous for right or left hand shooters

Gives new meaning to the question, "...dress right or left."

Regarding the original post, thank you for sharing. It is tragic and disheartening that there is such hate in the hearts of people, that they are compelled to kill strangers; learning there is valor such as those on the beach displayed is encouraging.

What a moving story. Thanks for sharing K

And so nice to see something positive about Muslims being posted by a Rightwinger.

Your politics must be awfully far out on the Leftist fringe in order to label someone a "right winger" who has posted in favor of single-payer healthcare and a progressive income tax that rises to 95 percent.

But that observation aside, I accept the compliment.

Thank you, Kirata, for sharing this powerful and moving story.

It brought to mind a pair of quotes I regularly need to recall:

Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
JOHN 1:46 (NRSV)

"Now learn," she commanded herself, "learn at last that anywhere you may expect grace."

You're right...they don't. Didn't stop Owner or Joether from applying them. I just made a counter-argument.
