A survivor of the massacre in Tunisia has revealed local hotel staff members formed a human shield on the beach in a heroic bid to protect tourists from the rampaging gunman. John Yeoman, 46, said Muslim staff members from the Bellevue Hotel told the gunman he would have to kill them first as they formed a human barricade between the shooter and Western tourists... He told MailOnline staff formed a shield and started yelling at the gunman: 'You must kill us first.' The gunman, who openly declared he was targeting Western tourists during the killing spree, was also told: 'You will have to get past us, but we're Muslim.' ~Source

Gunman Seifeddine Rezgui can be seen wandering away from a group of local men who have formed a human chain to protect tourists on a neighbouring beach

What a moving story. Thanks for sharing K

And so nice to see something positive about Muslims being posted by a Rightwinger.

WTF?!? You can't resist any chance at a jab? Get a grip, Tweaks. Not every "Rightwinger" on here thinks all Muslims, or Islam, is evil.

Sorry DS I wasn't having a jab at all. It was meant as a compliment. If it doesn't come across like one, my bad.
it
I have made the point that not all Rightwingers are poor on human rights issues a few times in other threads in the last few days.

ETA: Having re-read the 'offending' post I can see how it can be misinterpreted if read cynically. It was meant to be read positively, in the spirit of the thread.

I was talking to my neighbor the other day. (something I try to avoid but couldn't that day) And she made a comment that she was glad to see "those people" keeping their houses and yard kept up for a change. Being one of those oh so tolerant liberals she was under the impression that blacks didn't know how to take care of their property and has been very upset that so many have been moving into the neighborhood. I guess by your standards that was a compliment also. Maybe I could introduce the two of you and you can compare notes.

I think the difference would be that while it's generally considered insulting to refer to somebody's race in the context of their perceived failings, that doesn't apply to somebody's position on the right wing / left wing spectrum, THB.

Still, defences of right wing versus left wing perspectives seem a bit irrelevant on this thread. More important: Jesus. To come between a gunman and his intended targets, that's downright heroic .... And if they suspected he was ISIS, even more so: being Muslim hasn't shown itself to be much of a defence against ISIS attackers to date.

well according to this definition it doesn't seem to matter if you are judging a group because of their race or their thoughts...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bigot

: a person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc. : a bigoted person; especially : a person who hates or refuses to accept the members of a particular group (such as a racial or religious group)

: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

But I agree that right vs left bs is irrelevant and it is nice to see people standing up to these monsters.

Yes, it does.

I mean, it's quite something to get your head around. Say you were some schmo working in one of these tourist resorts. You're paid a pittance, to service loads of people who, as far as you're concerned, act like animals: Brits, Germans, Belgians, getting drunk, showing too much flesh, being all licentious (I vaguely understand that the average Muslim doesn't like such behaviour) .... and you put your own life on the line to defend them from being shot by a psychopathic gunman who has previously announced himself to be 'one of your kind' rather than 'one of their kind'?

I find it very, very hard to think of an equivalent, put it that way. I can see little reason why those people should put themselves between the gunman and the people they were protecting ... other than an extremely noble reason.

Well, put it this way: if I were one of those holidaymakers out there in Tunisia, I would consider something of a very large tip to be in order.

God, those guys had bollocks.

Your politics must be awfully far out on the Leftist fringe in order to label someone a "right winger" who has posted in favor of single-payer healthcare and a progressive income tax that rises to 95 percent.

But that observation aside, I accept the compliment.

K.

Yes the minority of conservatives, DS do not associate the average Muslim with being a evil killer bent on destroying America. Unfortunate because the majority of conservatives actually do make this association. An there are quite a few on this board, whom are conservative, and do try to paint all of Islam as an evil religion. Of course these are the same ones that often defend Christianity when some pig-headed moron does something evil and hides behind the Holy Bible. Maybe the two are connected?

Hey look at that, a bunch of people resisting a lunatic with a gun. And not one of them had a firearm on their person. Sure it might have helped. Then again, the gunman could have turned on them too because of those guns!

I wonder how many conservatives whom own guns, would have just as much balls to pull a stunt like that when faced with a lunatic with a gun?

Joe with a comment like that you are giving them an opening for another gun thread... because there is no doubt they will say if the tourists had guns there would not have been 30 deaths... And... they would be right.

What a damn world.
