I, personally, don't have any issues with his wanting to sell his video. He had no idea, when he started videoing the police activity, that it would end in a shooting death. YouTube has countless videos where people have videoed police activity. . .sometimes showing heroism, and often showing police involved in inappropriate activities.

In your OP you at least suggest that if a person is filming an automobile race, and they happen to catch a horrific crash that results in the death of one (or more) of the drivers, then it would be okay to sell the video results. What's the difference? This guy saw police activity, and like thousands of others, he started to video the encounter, with no idea what the outcome might be. It's not like he had some kind of previous knowledge that the event would end in tragedy, and so decided to capitalize on it monetarily.

Blood money? No more so than the guy filming the auto race.

JustAnotherSub writes, "People film stuff when they should be helping, either by intervening or calling for help." In many instances I do agree with this. You write, "I agree or at least yelling and letting people know someone is watching." IN THIS INSTANCE, what do you think the guy should have done? How should he have "helped"? Who should he have called. . .the "cops" were already there? At what point should he have intervened or made the call? If he had intervened, who should he have helped, the guy that got shot, or the officer? The instance in question took place out in public. Do you think the officer didn't know anyone would likely be watching? Would yelling have done anything other than possibly getting you arrested for interference?

In this instance, I don't feel that the guy did anything wrong. Under similar circumstances, I don't think I would have done much of anything any differently than this guy did. I don't know that I would have tried to sell the video, mainly because I'm really not a money-driven type of person, and I probably wouldn't have even thought of it. That he did think of selling the video doesn't bother me in the least.

To me igore there is a distinct difference…an auto race and its dangers are accepted by all…drivers spectators and journalists. They are all there willingly and for profit… This was a crime a horrific one and the families of all concerned were totally ignored for the sake of voyeurism and commercial profit.

I understand the rights involved and my way of thinking is personal but I still think it distasteful to profit from tragedy. To me it is the same feeling I get when a reporter shoves a microphone in a distressed mothers face asking how she felt when her daughter is murdered…bullshit media and despicable greed.
