The citizen photographer of the tragic police shooting in SC is demanding $10,000 for licensing of his video. To me this is blood money and disgraceful. I don’t care how much money news organizations make from this video I find selling it distasteful.

Now I could understand and even agree if a tragedy is captured by accident such as in motor sports or when filming a city scene. After all time and equipment costs but if I specifically filmed a tragedy of this sort I would only give the evidence to the police. Now if I thought social justice was not being carried out I would release the video to the media but at no profit.

What are your thoughts?

Butch

The free market at work

I don't see any issue that I ,myself, would get worked up over.

He was in the right place at the right time, the authorities have what they need, why he should not capitalize on what is his property is beyond me.

So no,I have no issue with it...and I'm sort of surprised you do

It is the basis for CNN and the like.

Are you suggesting that his property is not his to do with as he pleases?

My thoughts are, no, this does not bother me. How many books and such are based off tragedies?

Besides, if media outlets are going to make a profit off of his work, why shouldn't he?

I hate the cellphone world we have become period. People film stuff when they should be helping, either by intervening or calling for help. Perhaps if the money dried up, that could change.

I know, I am a dinosaur, I am good with that!

Admittedly, it leaves a somewhat unpleasant taste in the mouth. On the positive side - a very positive side, in my view - his getting good money for his film might encourage others to overcome whatever fears they might have and film similar outrages in the future.

I consider sharing photographic evidence with the police to be an ethical action.

But, if you want to use my photography or videography on a newscast; you need to pay me for copyrights. The difference is use by a "for profit" venue like a television station or newspaper and being a responsible citizen and aiding police inquiries. If you are making money off images I captured; I think I deserve a share.

Correct. He turned the evidence over to the police, as he should, but why should everyone else profit from it but him.

This immediately made me think of paparazi, they make millions filming famous people.
What is the difference between paparazi stalking celebrities for a great photo, or joe citizen on his smartphone, catching something newsworthy?

Now that just about everyone has a smartphone, usually in their hands when something newsworthy happens, joe citizen can cash in, similar to what the paparazzi have been doing for years.

Welcome to a new day, this is just the beginning.

I am not saying he does not have the right... But I am saying it is tasteless and blood money... I would never profit from someones death.

As I said Butch...it's nothing more than the free market in action....and I thought you supported the free market model. Therefore I was a bit surprised.

No big deal though.

I see... I am for a true free market...but I just do not believe a person should make a profit from a tragedy. Just wondering would you demand $10,000 for that video?

Like I said if I though it needed to be released for the sake of justice I would give it away...not demand money in return. It would be a morality decision not a rights decision.

While I can empathize with your position does this mean that you could never be in news?

Just a little bit of jargon clarification.

A paparazzi stalks celebrities looking for compromising photos to sell to tabloids.

Newspapers have "stringers" who are paid by the photo published or story published. Yes, some of them camp with a police and ambulance band scanner. Others just show up at public events and offer interesting shots to local publishers.

YES !! We live on a for-profit society.

It's just ok for the profit motive to make many things in health care that would save lives...not save lives because of the costs.
